...at the risk of asking a stupid question
« on: January 21, 2021, 08:07:15 pm »
Evening everyone...and Happy New Year.   I recently considered buying a set of new styled-steelies with new rubber to have on hand as a sort of second pair of shoes for my 65 fastback.   Right now I'm running some lovely torque-thrust rims that look great, but the idea of changing them over every so often with some styled steel rims has always interested me.   I got to talking with a fellow and he said to beware of doing it because - in his words - the styled steel rims were "nut-centric" and needed to be fitted by a specialist, that is, I couldn't do it in the shed myself.   It sounded like bollocks to be honest but the fellow is reasonably handy with the spanners and generally knows his shit.

Has anyone heard of such a thing?

Hey, don't worry about asking stupid questions,  it's when you give dump answers, that's a different thing!
No problems changing to different wheels as long as you have the correct nuts!
Old steel type tighten on a strong steel wheel taper, new alloy type need a spigot type nut.
Cheers Phil.

Just need to stagger tightening the bolts in a star pattern as you do up the wheelnuts. The taper on the wheelnuts pulls then to centre as you go.

The difficulty is getting them balanced as not all shops have the equipment for doing the old steel wheels.

Also RtB68.....the center bore of the rim needs to be the correct size to fit the drum/disc spindle bearing housing.....this will ensure the rim is centered correctly [perfectly]as per the geometry of the wheel/spindle
Then snug up the correct wheel nuts as per Dywane's advice......
I put a set of gleaming second hand 12 slots on my XA many many years ago with a center bore that was to large and I took a slow corner and watched my rear drivers side wheel overtake me......
