Speedo guage mph to kms ?
« on: October 12, 2020, 04:24:52 pm »
Hey guys just wondering what most of you guys do in regards to the speedos mph to kms ?

Do you stick with the mph speedo and have some little marks on the instrument lens or I have seen a company on ebay doing a stick on
conversion dial kits has anyone used these at all ?

Any thoughts ?

I just went with the sticker, and occasionally used a GPS speedo on my phone.

I have the black face Kph decal, which is a close match for the other gauges.
Here is a pic of my refurbished gauge cluster.

Our speedo is so inaccurate that we use a simple double the speed to find kph. When I want more accuracy and on long trips I use a satnav speedo.

Hi all,
I fitted an Autometer MPH speedometer to keep it sort of original.
What a mistake, never use it, I use a Polaris GPS heads up display!
Practicality over originally would be better in this case!
Cheers Phil.

thanks everyone for the replies, I think I may go for the gauges sticker set they look ok, now just to work out whether to go the black or the white for something different with blue LED's.

Be careful to buy the correct sticker if your gauge is 140mph. Some 1966 mustangs came with a 120mph gauge which require a different sticker part number.

Yep, I made that mistake and had to order the correct set, pull it all apart and re-do it all over again  :kickass:

I still use the way that was promoted when we went metric in the 70s, multiply the first single or double metric numbers  on road signs by 6.. E.g. in a 60k zone sign multiply the first number by 6 making 36mph same for double metric numbers 100k x 6 gives you 60mph. This was how they simplified the then new to us metric system and while it's not 100% accurate it's close enough to stop you getting booked.  :flag:

Careful buying the stickers

thanks everyone for the replies, I think I may go for the gauges sticker set they look ok, now just to work out whether to go the black or the white for something different with blue LED's.

I bought a sticker set from the US for all my gauges (in white) for $55 and they all folded up on the edges in the heat of the summer in Canberra within a couple of months. Waste of money! I think this is the site I bought my stickers from that curled up - http://www.whitegauges.net/products/1966-Ford-Mustang-White-Face-Gauges.html

I drew my own up and had a mate make them who has a vinyl printing business on good quality vinyl. These didn't curl up in the heat.

If anyone wants a copy of the drawings I'm happy to share them so you can get them printed yourself (200 kmh / 140mph). They cost me $20 to get printed.

I also use a GPS with a large speedo display but also have a $40 ebay HUD. The GPS is pretty spot on, the HUD's are about 5-7 km over (the same as my other car speedos) so you won't get booked easily.

This is the gauges I drew up that I can share if you pm me with your email:

This is one that I found that is offered that is pretty poor in my opinion because it's in an odd scale.

There are only a few speeds you need to remember, and so that's all I do.

Just reading through the comments, i notice something about 66 models having a 120mph or 140mph speedo, was there any significance or reason for this?

As I understand, later build 66’s, GT’s and with pony interior had the 140mph speedo. Early build 66’s came with the 120mph speedo. I think is was just a spec change, perhaps a carry over from the 65 to 66 models.

Hey, that's not a speedometer/ odometer! I've never seen one that measures in kilograms!
Cheers Phil.

Hi all just thought I would provide an update on my initial post, so I did go with the white gauge sticker pack in kms, I fitted up a new cluster surround and new lens and also fitted new blue leds I think it turned out ok, if I ever sell it if the new owner wants to go back to stock they just have to remove the sticker and the the original mph is still there,
