I have a 351w in my Red/Gold 65 FB ( :thumb:) and run a K & N HP-3001

They sell for about $20 from most quality speed shops.

I use Castrol Edge Titanium 20w-50

Nice ride mate. Do you run power steering on your beast?

Cheers

They've ran fine since the 60's on Z9 Ryco filters. Does it have a flat tappet cam is really the question if so you want an oil with plenty of zinc like Penrite HPR30

If you are really concerned, get an analysis of your old oil and/or when you remove the old filter, cut it open and check for crap in the filter.

You should be OK though - shouldn't be necessary.

Cheers,
Frank.

Ryco also do a Z9 in a finer filter now,  Z9HE.  A few dollars more but well worth it.

Dont be concerned with the ZINC in oil, as its only in the USA they dont have zinc in the oil, so alll aussie oils have zinc.
If you have a few miles put 20w but if its new put 10w, I use 10W 40 synthetic and it uses nil oil between services.

Nah, just change on services.  Its also a good place to stick a decent magnet if you don't have one on the sump plug.

Cheers guys

Thanks for your thoughts.
Yes the cam is a flat tappet hydraulic cam.
Penrite is my normal oil choice. So will stick with that.
Motor is fresh and strong so will run 10 or 15 weight oil.

Cheers JL yours looks prett. tidy too :)
Nice colour combo!
Mine is actually a stroked 351 so 408ci

Oh yeah
No power anything on the old girl.
Bought break booster as I was worried disc's all round would make the pedal too heavy but didn't fit it as the pedals not overly heavy. Power steering would be not a bad idea with 245's up front but as its only an occasional ride not that big a problem.

And cheers Frank what 60's Mustang isn't a sweet ride

Ummm... no. Not even close.

US oils still have ZDDP/ZDTP (zinc/phosphorus compounds) in them, and many "classic" oils are available.  API standards are reducing levels (globally for all oil manufacturers who use API ratings) for various reasons and as the general market for oil is new cars its not an issue..

The primary issue with Zinc additives is during break in, not general use.  In older engines zinc can help maintain but the lower levels are not  huge concern for stock type engines, in higher performance (firmer springs and more valve to cam pressure) lower quality (poorer metals) and poorer fit (lower tolerance cheaper parts) applications it is a issue.  A typical combination for wanna-bes who want cheaper horsepower and buy on lowest price.

As for "all Australian oils"... bunk.  Penrite Everyday 10W-30 is API SN rated, exactly like many US oils.

Industry Specifications : API SN Resource Conserving ILSAC GF-5
Typical Data
Density at 15oC, kg/L 0.868
Viscosity, Kinematic, cSt at 40oC 72 at 100oC 10.8
Viscosity Index 138
Viscosity, Cold Cranking @ -25 oC 5,810
Zinc, mass % 0.085

Pennzoil 10w-30 (picked at random from US brands) has 800-850 ppm of zinc (about 0.080 - 0.085%)  Amazingly similar to the Australian oil value when the US has "no " zinc... odd.  :thumb:

Pennzoi Racing Motor Oil SAE 25W-50 (again picked at random) has 1980ppm zinc.  Available over the counter in the US.  HPR 30 and 40, the "better" Aussie oils, have 1570ppm and 1450ppm.... less zinc.   :leaving:

Similar levels of additives based on ratings and no magical oils here...  just as you can buy HPR here there are the same type oils there...

The US has 100x the number of muscle cars than Oz and if you think no one there has the same issue and the market is not selling product$ to fill the need you are mistaken.  The misinformation on this issue is legend...

On the filter.

How often do you change your oil and how do you drive?  If every 5000k and general street, use pretty much any filter you like.

If you drive it harder and go longer between changes buy a mid-to-upper-range filter.  WIX are good and I had someone tell me they found Fram's locally (which many people hate, but I've run for 22+ years on the same engine with no issues)

The Ryco are a good midrange filter that work fine and don't cost a bundle.  K&N and "racing" filters are a waste of money on a street car IMO, but cheap in the context of the cost of the car.  :thumb:

To be honest the Mustang does very little driving.
It does the odd run down the strip and isnt driven very hard otherwise.
So good point at the moment filters arn't so important.
She spends more time running in the garage than the road, just to keep her ticking over.
I hope to take her out a lot more often in the future esp with friends getting their restorations back on the road this year.  So next year I would like to put a few km's on, realistically 5-7k.
JL she's a WA car, so thats a shame.
Mert what do you sugges for oil choice.
Motor is 351 stroked to 408 with all the fruit you would expect on a street /strip motor, big lumpy cam, 10:1 compression, runs on 98 octane and nothing less, quality parts throughout 7000-7500 rev limit. Motors a few years with probably 15,000km on it. With the power it makes she is cruising most of the time but needs the odd heavy right foot to keep her clean.

One filter that always seemed to get good reviews is the Purolator PureONE.  Z9 equivalent is PL30001 .

I got mine from Amazon USA.  Cost me $125 for 10.

Seemed like a good deal to me.

Pete did a quick google and found a nissan club talking about those filters they said they buy theirs from Super Cheap. The group think there good and some mention of funky colours?
I will look a bit more into the Purolator filters.
Its interesting how popular the Ryco's are on this thread.
As a lot of mechanic and vehicle enthusiasts people I talk to say they used to be great but wont use them any more as the quality is poor these days.
Macka yep sure do.
Glenn 70 the motor is built for the track so loves to rev.
Loves to drink as well  :burnout:
