NEED HELP
« on: June 09, 2010, 10:18:30 am »
Hey guys, Just wondering if anyone can help me? I'm after pics of the under side of you mustang from around 1965-1970's. Just a few shots of the chassis on both sides.

Mine has box tubing on both sides and wondering if I'll get complianced in QLD or if there is a certain size and thickness of box tubing and bolts meant to be used. I had my spray painter over yesterday and we looked at it and thought it doesn't look strong enough.

Any help would be great. ( Mine is a 67 Fastback )

Cheers

Chris

They are not supposed to join as per the pics of the 66 & 67. On the last pic of my 68 it has aftermarket rail connectors fitted. These are not standard & are not required unless you want them. They make the body a bit stiffer.

the frame rails do not usually have anything between them. as shown on scott and stamglovers cars. the bottom one has additional support added.

stock bodies should not need engineers signoff. but the additional support stuff may need it cause you are welding to the original frame rails.

this illustrates why its important to have a good rust free car. the whole body of the car acts as its support structure. any damage weakens the structure, and could easily make the car unroadworthy.

No "Full Chassis" in a Mustang.

It is based on a Monocok (forgive me on the spelling) structure where you have the body forming part of the overall strength of the car.

My 66 has 40mm square rails bolted from the rear rails to the front rails. You can get a bolt on kit or a kit thats needs to be welded to strengthen the car. mine looks like a home made job. I thought about unbolting it but it isn't doing any harm like it is. Probably  stiffens it up a bit. I didn't affect the rego but  I not sure they took that much notice anyway.
it had tramp bars on it too but I removed them as they hung down too low and were not legal.

Unless you plan on some serious power they are not needed, by serious 500hp+ & drag racing/track days. You can just take them off or leave the little ones there.
