Those numbers come to 336 cubes. Likely you've got the stroke slightly wrong and its 331 which used to be a pretty common stroked 302 before 347's became popular. One theory is that the 331 is happier because the rod length to stroke ratio is better.

If its a Dart block I guess someone could have put some old 289 heads on it but you have to wonder why. It's probably a good basis for some aluminium heads and bigger cam.

Hi I have a 66 Mustang that has a Dart iron block in it. the car badge says 289 but i dont think so because it has 4 bolt crank mains. Ive just pulled the heads off because of a head gasket fault and the casting on the head says 289 but Dart didt make a 289. Bore is roughly 4 inchs and stroke is 85mm or 3.346 inchs i think it might be a 351 or a 347 stroker. 351 had a different firing pattern than standard they were 13726548 and mine has the std 15426378.

Can anyone help please

Thank you. I've heard that MSD are great. I think I've been led astray by my mechanic re the 351 distributor, which doesn't fill me with confidence.

I'd just need to spray it blue :)

Not a 351w distributor, that’s the wrong one . This is expensive but a MSD 302w ready to run is The best one .  Just make sure it has the correct bottom gear for the roller cam .

Hi All,

I am hoping someone can afford me some learned information about a suitable distributor for a Windsor 302 that has recently been rebuilt with a 347 stroker and steel roller cam (stage1.5).

It's in a ZC Fairlane, so my apologies if I get anyone's back-up that it's not a Mustang. The engine is the same so I was hopeful that your wider-sized group could help me.

It's currently running with the original style dizzie with the timing advanced, which is causing it to overheat. I'm assuming that I should simply use a new 351W dizzie with the gear changed to melonized or composite, to suit the cam

I'm keen to hear if anyone has been in the same situation and what your solve was.

I purchased a cheap SMB Ford distributor but the shaft size was not convention (.510") and most replacement gears are .531"

Thanks Phil, successfully removed it last night with a bit of swearing and have a new on order, 19mm ring spanner was pretty much spot on for the size. I agree on the tools, it'll be a slow buy process, buy as I need so to speak.

Cheers everyone

You own a classic mustang and you only have metric tools. If your going to do any work, seriously, buy some SAE tools thats what they are made with.

Hey Lyle.
I agree with FB, get yourself a set of AF tools.
Don’t go crazy.
Don’t fall for the trap it has to be Sidchrome or Snap-on, Kinchome, JBS, Stanley and others make lovely tools also.
I’ve bought some really good tools on eBay auctions.
Cheers Phil.

Thanks AussiePhil, will give it a tentative try, as I said it's been rounded a bit, just don't want to make a bigger mess of it. If it doesn't work I'll definitely look into a set of sae sockets or spanners FB or last resort take it to my mechanic to do it (old school guy whose worked on numerous mustangs plus other classic models so in good hands), just trying to become a little more self reliant with maintenance and repairs.
