Title: fuel question
Post by: ron on July 18, 2006, 12:55:09 pm
Due to this, that and the other thing my car has been sitting idle for 2 months.Still has half a tank of Optimax.Anybody know how long this stuff stays stable.Don't want to run around with stale fuel and with these current prices, a bit hesitant (tight assed) to drain it . Thanks.

in an old car,,,fuel sitting around suffers a couple of promblems....

1, the natural heating and cooling of the tank due to temp flucations...let the violatiles out and water in...

but at half a tank...when you go again...just top it off..
just done expect good perfrmance out of old fuel...

Avgas normally comes with a shelf life.
In drum form that life is marked clearly.

2 months isn't long as avgas is 6.

If you are worried about it, you could always dilute it with some fresh fuel.

Cheers

I have the same concern. Don't top it up unless your going to drive and use most of it. If your going to leave the car in the garage for a while. Try and park it with 1/4 to 1/2 a tank. Otherwise, next time you'll have the same concern.
I tend to put no more than $20 in mine unless I'm going for a bit of drive. That way it's always fresh.
Have you concidered draining it, and using the fuel in your every day car?

Would if I could, but I'm a farm boy so it's diesel for me.However ,with the petrol doped up to the eyeballs with octane boost might have a bit of fun with the ride on.LOL!!

I bought an old 318 Valiant many years ago which has been sitting for 11 years with a full tank.
A little bit of 2 stroke mix to fill the carby bowl & it ran fine on the 11 yo fuel.
2 months sitting should be fine.

I've been drving for 12 years now, and I'm certain petrol has changed. Not only is it 3 times the price, it doesn't last as long either.

hi,

after some reading and some thinking...the answer to the fuel quiestion,if you are going to stroe a car for a while..

store it with a full tank...it is the volume of air in the tank that gives water to the fuel....
