Title: Unisteer manual R&P steering
Post by: Dizzy on February 28, 2021, 10:04:50 pm
Hi. My 66GT coupe has manual steering. I found a NOS Unisteer R&P manual conversion kit on line and near me for $800 (it’s about 7 years old but never fitted to a road going vehicle). Is it worth pursuing to improve the cars steering in conjunction with some front suspension upgrades.

I much prefer the Borgeson boxes, very easy to fit and your don't lose any of your turning circle. No issues with engineering approvals either as they're just a bolt in replacement for the original.

For my '66 project ... I'm fitting a Borgeson box, 68 collapsible steering column and Astra electric PS pump.

Hey Dwayne, you have just tweaked my curiosity, will be going for a Borgeson box myself, but what's your thinking on the Astra pump, Is it a space saving thing or more of an aesthetic/minimalistic look, as a good alternative to pumps and pulleys,  Andrew..,

A mate had a spare pump laying around, so I might as well fit it.

Hey Dizzy,
I fitted a Unisteer power steering and find it great!
The difference from manual to power steering is incredible!
If you go ahead and need some advice I'd be happy to help.
You may need to do something about your headers, I fitted JBA shorties!
Is your car LHD.
Cheers Phil.

Another photo!
I've got an 89 302 and converted the power steering pump to serpentine to suit!
Cheers Phil.

Thanks for the feedback

I’ll let the manual R&P part pass and look to purchase a new powered setup from Borgeson or Unisteer.
Might check out some of the EPAS systems also before pulling the trigger.

I have no mech skills (40 years in Banking doesn’t prepare you for anything other than finance) so will be looking for a recommendations for a local SE Qld supplier and installer.

Hey Dizzy,
Yes, there is a lot of mechanical and machining work!
On the other hand I don't even know how to use an ATM.
Cheers and good luck with your seach!
Phil.
