Title: 2001 MUSTANG GT/ COBRA GEARBOX
Post by: Giffo on July 12, 2016, 06:19:19 pm
Will a 5 speed gearbox from a 2001 GT Tremec/Ford 3650 5 speed transmission. As fitted to 2001-04 Ford Mustang GT,  fit a 2001 Mustang Cobra SVT which has currently a T45 gearbox?

I have the chance to buy a new one very cheap.
My 2001 Mustang Cobra SVT has a T45 5 speed box.
What if anything has to be changed?

Thanks in advance.
Steve

Post up a pic of the door sticker to your car - it should be a TR3650 in your car, if the transmission code is K then you have a TR-3650. Not heard of a Cobra with a T-45... Not much point I would guess in buying a spare gearbox, they don't break often?

ok, ignore what I said before - our cars were originally fitted with a T-45!

My door sticker is a '6' also, so that's what was originally in the car. Here it is:

This site (below) seems to suggest only the very late '01 model Cobra's cars got a TR-3650 and all others got the T-45, well - going by my build date you won't find a later build '01 than my car, but then Ford Australia would have made sure that they were all the same spec for serviceability purposes

Steve, in answer to your question, I have just replaced a T45 in a 2002 Cobra with the correct Cobra specific Tremec 3650. What a job it was. Tickford, in their wisdom, when converting the cars to right hand drive, moved the engine over to the left. This creates clearance problems everywhere. The Tremec gearbox is a lot larger than the T45, and fouls the transmission tunnel in several places. This is why in my opinion, that the later Australian/Tickford cars never got the Tremec 3650.  Also, removing, and refitting the transmission for a first timer on these cars can be quite daunting. It was a decent job for 2 mechanics, and it took all day.

And you cannot use the BA falcon Tremec. It has to be the mustang specific unit to suit the 2001-2003 Mustang Cobra's

In my opinion, leave the T45 in its place, unless you are going to up the power output by a fair amount, or it is continually popping out of reverse, (common problem with the T45's)  as it will be quite an expensive exercise in time and money

There's a T-56 in mine, that fitted with some 'love taps' for clearance....

Hahah. Mine is al good since I put in a new quick shift. Been great.
Still, it good to know these things. Thanks Big Al for your expertise.

I am looking for a good tuner to increase performance. Know any one Big Al?? In Sydney?
