Do you guys know if their is an actual paint code or anything with the black paint that the engine bay should be sprayed? Or a mat black or flat black or something. Our paint dude hasnt been able to come up with bugger all info on the boss.
And the black for the bonnet is that the same?
If a paint specialist cant find it, id hate to just guess and get it wrong.
Even the yellow has been a pain to match up, weve finally got it though.
We are going for a clear over base coat, anyone else gone that way?

These paint questions come up regularly in the technical queries column of 'Mustang Monthly' magazine, maybe take a look through their website.
Eg. see Feb 2014 issue "RestoRoundup" column by Bob Perkins of Perkins Restoration - letter 'Engine Bay Details' with a guy asking for his '66 - Bob Perkins replied (quote) "We use PPG DP90LF black primer for protection of the bare metal, then use PPG DDL-9423 for the correct semi-gloss black finish".
I do remember either the hood colour or rear panel colour query coming up in the Resto column but not how long ago, I'd have to dig back through 2013 issues or earlier & I don't have those to hand right now.
Anyway, see if the PPG paint numbers mean anything to your paint guy.
In any case just like any paint you need to see & approve a sample.

Cheers guys. Thanks for all that. I figured there would of been just a stock standard black across all early mustangs but even when searching boss302.com everyones had their own special mix done.

The boss registry has been great for me finding out things. join and you get a answer every time.
Sean from bosskraft (sponsor)could give you local advise (aust) ,he has a paint shop,maybe send you freight you the the paint .

Don't quote me but I've heard many in Aus. would use what is known as GMH black; of all things.

Oh hell. Ill paint it pot belly black with a cheap as chips brush before GMH black goes near it. Haha.

Ford used a paint very similar to GMH paint, Steve, so you're near right on, but these days, most like to use clear over base and use a matting agent in the clear to bring the sheen to acceptable levels for concours. We've also used, on more 'correct' concours cars, hardened basecoat, as it resembles the very thin film thickness that Ford used and has better durability than Ford's paint. With the correct amount of hardener in basecoat, it has the perfect sheen, too. You'd have to check paint brands, as not all paint brands allow hardening of their basecoats.

I was getting ready to eat my words on the gmh black but found a black through formula paints we were very happy with. I know it wont be concours correct but looks great against the yellow ( clear over base ) and easy to do touch ups with in engine bay after i no doubt make a few scratches trying to fit engine back in.

Greg, to avoid scratches when you put the engine back in you can use old carpet cut into strips and just tape them at strategic points, works a treat and no scratches!

Just got the car back last week from paint, i have been changing my profile pic through the stage of the cars rebuild, i cant actually load any pics on the page though, have to jump on board this photo bucket thing and get some up
