Title: 1965 fastback rear courtesy light lenses are loose
Post by: skinner36 on May 12, 2013, 07:37:58 pm
Hi,

The lenses on my rear courtesy lights are loose and keep falling out. Is this a common problem or have the holders weakened with age? The look almost new.

What is the best way to fix the problem?

Thanks

John

Do you mean that the whole metal fitting keeps popping out of the fibreglass panel?
Or just the actual lenses themselves popping out of the metal fitting?

Pretty much both actually. The metal fitting is loose and so is the lens.

By the way. My apologies for posting this in the wrong section

What I'd do is tape the lens in the exact position from the front then use a small tool to run a thin bead of silicone around the perimeter on the inside such that there won't be any shadowing.
Give the lens a good clean & polish first.
If you look at the housing you'll see it has spring-loaded fingers on the sides. Try bending them out slightly. Or it may be that the problem is that the fibreglass panel is a bit broken out around the hole, in which case you'll have to repair it / reinforce it from the back.
Fiddly but do-able.
New ones are available & not very expensive if the chrome on yours is pitted & the lens yellowed.
