Hi All,
I need some advice please about the choice of colour for my Mustang. It's being restored and is almost at the stage of being re-sprayed. The restorer is adamant that it should be sprayed yellow which was its original colour. The problem is I hate yellow and it looked great sprayed white when I bought it. The restorer says it's better to keep to the original colour. I know that at the end of the day my personal choice doesn't matter because I will be selling it as soon as it's finished, but just need some feedback on what you guys think about this. The car is a 1971/72 Mach1 fastback and the ones I've seen look outstanding in white. All replies will be greatfully appreciated.
-
I love white, but if you are selling it why not put up a poll for us all to vote on. I'm betting red would be overwhelming favourite???
-
If you are selling this then I would agree with your restorer, and the fact that it is a Mach1 would seal the deal for me to keep it as per original. This is of course if the car has been restored to original everywhere else.
-
Yes, it's being kept as original as possible, even the motor which runs extremely well considering (it was driven right up until the day it was shipped out). All panels etc replacement parts are new from USA, the body itself was in great cond except the floors which have been replaced and a couple of under the bonnet panels, work on the doors and boot lid. I was lucky enough to get some matching seats in Aus in reeeely good condition (still can't believe it), the originals were worn down to the springs :(

Thanks Johnno, I keep thinking white white white til I'm going nuts but know I must go with the experts. Your idea of a poll is excellent (how do I arrange that?), and I agree, I'll bet red would come out out on top too...candy apple red....yummy!

what ever you do, please don't do vermillion fire, mine's a one of one in au.
-
Yellow for sure (yes, I'm very biased)
But if not yellow, I suggest Vermillion Fire, as we could do with a few more of that colour in Australia.... :leave:

That colour really grabs me, love your choice, looks very very nice (tempting but, no, I couldn't do it to you)

Hmmmm...vermillion fire....even sounds good
No No (slaps wrist) I won't do it
I have to admit that yellow car looks extremely good (brainwashing self) and white is hard to keep clean.

What colour is the interior????????

Actually I've never been a big fan of yellow either, but something about the yellow and black combo made me want it bad. It actually came out of the factory painted white with blue stripes.
I've always been a bit of a fan for darker colours with a tinge of metallic on these cars too.
-
White is not as hard as darker colours to keep clean......... eg Black, Dk Blues, Dk Reds etc.
I also like silver and lighter blues and greens..
-
I like light blues too. I agree, the darker colours are a b...h to keep clean, especially black
-
What colour is the interior????????
Ginger (yuck), makes up for it by being in good nic though

Me too, had a car once that was dark blue metallic, loved it!
Youve got me 99% convinced on the yellow
-
I never thought there was any other color other than red...BUT.....Its a no brainer,Yes yellow, why are you selling it?
Luvhev
-
I would keep it original for resale
-
original it is then ...a fine choice sir...

Finacial reasons, finding it almost impossible to keep up with the ever rising cost of living, it's going to break my heart, I was hoping on keeping it indefinately. I intend to register it though and take a few (very careful) runs before I part with the old girl, I hate even thinking about it

If you were painting it completely yellow I'd say no way - these cars are a little too fat for a single bright colour. But with the black Mach 1 striping to visually slim it down it will look hot, and very nineteen-seventies (once again, in my biased opinion).

Nice pictures of the above yellow car (with ginger interior) here at Mustang Monthly: http://www.mustangmonthly.com/projectbuild/mump_0209_1972_custom_yellow_mach_1_hardtop/index.html

Jim, names Brett E. Neuman, but without the E. Neuman.
First suspicion my car was a Sprint was traces of blue paint under some paint chips. Confirmed it by finding HB on the door sticker denoting Sprint blue/white interior - no other Mustang has HB. Doubly confirmed by Marti report stating it's a Package "A" Sprint (base package, 302 Windsor 2-barrel, three speed toploader). That explained why it had the Mach 1 bumper and grille but regular hood. Engine is original but just put a 4-barrel carb/manifold on it over xmas, still running the 3-speed too though (d'oh!). Not really interested in returning it to original; I like the yellow/black theme best, and I don't really think Sprints are ever going to be anything very collectible. Follow the link to a pic of the Marti report if you are interested:

Hanging Rock? Hadn't really thought about it, but....maybe...

Nice looking car jennijenone, the white doesn't look bad at all.
I notice it doesn't have the hockey stripes down the side or the blacked out hood; it may not have originally come out with the black hood and stripes but in my opinion you should put them on if you paint the car yellow - I think it would look visually stunning with war-paint plus help the resale value.
By the way, if I were you I'd do anything to hold on to your car instead of selling it. 17 years ago I sold my '70 Mach 1 and 10 years ago I sold my XB coupe, and to this day I've never stopped regretting that I sold them
-
Thanks sprint72
I love that car to pieces, I've always wanted a Mustang and now I have it, I'm faced with selling it, I'll sure do anything I can to keep it for as long as I can, I'll never get over losing it. I understand how you feel about your previous cars, it must be a constant "wish I could turn the clock back" thing, sometimes life can be a beech :(
-
p.s. I have the stripes to go along the sides along with other Stang goodies. When it was last painted I guess the owner couldn't be bothered with the trimmings. I was told the Americans treated the Mustangs in the earlier days like old model Commodores (no offence meant Holden) i.e. a dime a dozen, I'll bet a lot of them wish they still had them.
-
ok , Yellow with white stripes over the top?? Seen it on a '67 & looked brilliant.

Yeah what he said ....... yella with white stripes.... I get plenty of good feedback on mine:thumb:

Mark I think your car needs a good tune mate, I don't know if you noticed all the smoke coming out of the back? I'm sure that's not meant to happen. :nono:

Mustangs don't leak oil! I call it "lubricating fluid migration".

:smile01:
Now that's funny right there!
-
"I don't really think Sprints are ever going to be anything very collectible."
ooohhh, you probably thought that about your previous musclecars!
one day, like in mad max2, we'll be scrounging around for a few drops of fuel at any expense ...while others go about their day to day business in their priuses...and diesel minis...
hehe...
-
There is only one colour scheme for a mustang, Yellow & black!!
-
stock
-
Definitely paint it the original colour. You may like white but your future buyer may just love the original yellow colour on a Mach 1.
-
Either way i agree " these cars are too "fat" for a
Solid bright colour" its got to be broken up by stripes, i personally think black with white or white with black on a mach1 (original or clone) but honesty dark or light the slightest bit of dirt will bug the hell outta ya... even if its freshly washed you will see a spec and it will drive you insane... (or is that just me)
-
You could stick to what Henry Ford said.
People can have the car in any colour they want, so long as its black! ;)
(I know he said model T but for the sake of it lets pretend he said car ;) )
-
Well Jennijenone, plenty of advice here, no poll necessary, whats the final verdict????????
Drum Roll please, and now the envelope ...........the winner is !!!!:smile01:
-
McDonald's yellow
I can't go against the advice of so many Mustang wise
people
Cheers to all and thanks :smile02:

I can remeber the day, when I was just an ankle biter, when my dad imported a cream Olsmobile from USA, apparently he couldn't get it in black, needed black for his hire care business, so he had it sprayed black, that was one of the worst days of my life, I thought that car was magic until it turned black, I felt like crying for a week. Most of the cars were black in Aus in those days....so boooooring
Cheers, jennijenone
