Title: 2001-2002 Tickford Cobra Mustangs
Post by: Ausfox on July 11, 2013, 10:27:58 am
Does anyone have any factual figures on how many Cobras were actually completed and sold by Ford Australia ?

And a break down between Coupes and Convertibles?.

Is there a Register for these?.

On the Ticford site it says in 2002 only 100 cobras were built. All were RHD and came to Australia. All others that came in 2001 were LHD and converted to RHD by Tickford.
Considering that the Ford production year for 2002 starts in September 2001 its possible some of the 2001 's came from the US as RHD
It also notes that there were 3 V8 engines at that time. Seeing as how so many of that model are a dark blue it would be interesting to see how many of each colour were sold here.
I know there are at least 6 that I know of on the Central Coast and Newcastle areas and everyone is the dark blue

my brother bought a demo from city ford back in 2001 for $88k. it had 1000km on it from memory. he kept it for 10 years. it was a black convertible. he put the saleen rims on it with a borla exhaust.
he sold it with 150k km and got $29k for it. sold it in 1 week.
he now has a 2011 shelby gt500 convertible. the difference in quality between the cars is night and day.
i honestly believe the 2001 cobras was one of the worst cars ive ever driven. it sounded nice, but drove like a dog

Contact Jeffy, he is the guru on the 2001/2002 Cobra.
When I purchased my 2002 Cobra ( in 2011 ), I was lead to believe that there were 100 made. 70 Coupes and 30 Convertibles.

Bit of a correction on my earlier post. There was only 100 Cobras built in 2002. All RHD and all shipped to OZ. Tickfords site say that 250 Mustangs sold in Australia in 2001/2002.
Couldn't find any ref. as to how many were coupes and how many verts.

As far as I know - of the Cobra's imported to Australia - ALL were LHD when sent, Ford US wouldn't have done the conversions, all were done by Tickford. There were 150 convertibles, 150 coupes, all were 5 speed cars, all were the same spec motor - 32V DOHC 4.6ltr. In the US, they released the Cobra in 2001 but not 2002, there is some skepticism in the US about us having 2002 Cobras, so a photo of the door sticker ends that conversation pretty quickly, and the remainder of the guys are very curious to see a 2002 Cobra, but when it turns out to be identical (apart from the steering wheel from what I can tell) then it's a bit ho-hum, especially when compared to the 03/04 Cobra....

Extract below from the Yellow Mustang Registry:

http://www.yellowmustangregistry.com/ProductionCobra.html (http://www.yellowmustangregistry.com/ProductionCobra.html)

"*2002 Cobra NOTE: Officially, there were no 2002 Cobras produced in the US, but Ford's sales data shows 100 4-valve Cobras shipped to Australia as a special export batch in early '02. SVT has stated that they do not count these numbers in their totals but they were labeled as 2002 Models from Ford. These cars were exactly the same as the '01's except were made especially for Australia's standards (right hand drive, extra lights, etc.)."

Which is wrong as they were complete LHD cars with the only diffence being Jap Export front and rear Lights,

Interesting to note Ford still considered them 2002 models despite their build dates.

Interesting to note Ford still considered them 2002 models despite their build dates.

This is the same as with many manufacturers. It ssems to be Australia that is different. In the motorcycle world, the new models start hitting show room floors around August. Some from August on, which is not far, you will be able to buy 2014 models.

Another example is Subaru, say they release a 2002 model but with a build date of 10/2001, the model will be labelled as an MY02.
If you walk in and say you have a 2001 model and ask for a part but they changed that part on the MY02 model, you will be supplied the wrong part.

I can not tell you how many times I've had this argument with people over the counter.  And typically the ones who get their back up the most is the ones whose mate told them so and their mate knows it all. CoughHalreyownerscough  :bolt:

The Yanks start their models in the September the year before e.g   2002 car production started in Sept 2001. Aust cars start Jan 1.
Probably the only real way is to decode and see what day the car was actually produced.

The only real way is by the VIN. You can see here, the 10th digit decodes what model it is. About half way down the page is the list of letters and numbers that are designated to each year.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_Identification_Number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_Identification_Number)

This of course is only relevant for 17 digit VIN numbers.

And this is why parts suppliers insist on a VIN before they look up parts.

Be very careful with that car.

You'll put a smile on the face of any speed camera operator...

Enjoy - I had one for 19 years and it was great. A little agricultural to drive, but bullet-proof reliable. I drive it like I stole it most of it's life and other than the Australian-made clutch cable (contact Bi Al's Muscle cars to see if he has any spares - i went through about 8), it never let me down.
