72 Mach 1 H code Auto - Gold Glow.
« on: April 08, 2021, 10:27:53 pm »
Today I picked up / had delivered my 7/72 Mach 1 in Gold glow.
This baby is as stock as they come. All tags such as carby, engine, body tags are still in place.
Interior is like new and is original. Was a 1 owner car from Texas.
Only rust is in the lower rear quarters. The rest of the body is sound.
Still has drum brakes all round.
Have ordered a Marty report to get an update as to factory options.
Based on how I see it it has the following base / options:
Mach 1 Sports roof, Gold glow, 351 2v, FMX Auto, 2.75:1 9"diff, standard ginger trim, fold down rear seat, AM/FM radio, optional 14" wheel covers.

To get it on the road only needs some rubbers here and there, rust repair, plus the usual Aust changes such as seat belts, head lights, rubber brake lines etc.

I have created a blog to document the work done on the car. - https://72mach1mustang.blogspot.com/

Hey Brendan,
That car looks fabulous,  as you say stock as, for originally you'd get used to the drum brakes!
I still say leave it as is, a lot of enthusiasts will admire at it for it's originality.
 :coolpic: :omg:
Cheers Phil.

Good to see you've joined the 7173 group.  The information within that group is amazing.  They'll be all over this car as so many of the USA ones have been messed about with over the years.  One thing that irks me with the A D R regs is the red versus amber rear indicators.  Don't be rushed into re-wiring until you check it further.  Yes, many other drivers are confused with a red flashing light ahead of them but give them enough time to get the message and you should be O K.  Send me a P M if this does not make sense.

Good work - stick with it.

PKJ, Thanks for the update.
I had heard that cars up to end of 73 did not need a yellow indicator on the back. My roadworthy guy was not concerned about the flashing red as indicators.
I need to call around the VASS guys to find one that is agreeable with what I want to do. Im keen to retain original looking seat belts and hopefully use the same buckles and have them rebuilt with belts that are to Aust standards.
I agree re the red indicators in terms of giving people plenty of warning.. I tested them last night and they flash very very slow.. So need to find out why.
I have seen a retrofit LED insert for the 71-73 cars (and earlier) so then sequence the lights flashing across between the lenses..

You're correct - amber indicators are only required on vehicles manufactured after 1st Jan 1973.  My car squeaked in as manufactured Dec 4 1972.  The Marti report will tell you this.  Each section has a requirement year from Jan 1st which can cause problems as the USA manufacturing years ran from July so January is in the middle.

Search " Australian Design Rules " then read through all the background ( typical Government stuff ) for compliance on existing vehicles.
I used the one referred to as LO1-2 ( effective 2014 ) for my '73 Mach 1 a couple of years ago.  It is broken down into sections such as
" Reversing Lamps " prior to 1st Jan 1972, then " Door Latches " prior to 1st Jan 1971 etc etc.  Print yourself a copy and go through each section to do your homework before you talk to the compliance guys.  You will then work from a position of strength with this info.  There are only about 9 - 10 pages that apply to the Jan 1st 1973 cut off date.

The seat belts will ( should ) have a fabric tag sewn on the back with a manufacturing date.  You may have to change them for ADR compliant ones whether you like them or not.  Keep the old ones regardless. I can send you pics of the reinforcing plates the engineer guy had me make for the anchor points if it helps but talk to your VASS folks first.  I'm in Qld but these are National Rules which some States put their own spin on because they can.
Happy to help via email or 'phone call.
Have fun.

PJK,
Thanks for the tips. Most appreciated. I will look up the rules.. I have heard that the guys around Vic like to make their own rules. So agree with doing my homework.
I called a seatbelt restorer today and they can use my buckles and make new ones that are complaint. But again, will find a VASS person I like / agree with and make sure they will pass the remade ones before I get them done.
I have updated my blog again this arvo with a heap more pictures. I also got the standard Marty report emailed to me today and the car has all the items listed apart from a small upgrade to a AM/FM radio. The rest is all there. Not a huge list of options, but hey.. that's what makes the car.
Have pictured all the original stickers, tags etc from the car and put them on the blog. Also pictured some of the original doco on the blog also. Will go and ask he 7173Mustang guys about the spare I have as I suspect it is the original. Also check re the part number of the carby and alternator. It also appears to have the original fan shroud as it is fiberglass. Ignore the awful colour of the radiator. It needs a repair.
