Used Sidchrome prices
« on: September 06, 2020, 07:50:46 pm »
Hi All.
What is the go with the price of used Sidchrome tools!
I've got a small, insufficient problem!
I'm missing 11/16 to 3/4 open end spanners out of my sidchrome spanner sets, I've got several spanners of each size but I'm missing this size and the sets just doesn't look right without them, it's not that I don't have both sizes in other spanners and I have another brand (VBW) that has this size in the set, but I like to use Sidchrome spanners!
The new Sidchrome spanners are different so I was on eBay looking for matching style spanner and the prices are ridiculous! Good quality, full chrome goes for up to $30.00 plus, I can get a rusty one for $15.00 +$5.00 freight!
11/16 is not common on Mustangs, only fitting 7/16" bolts.
Out of principle I'm not going to pay that sort of money.
I suppose that's why they're the price they, people filling up there sets!
If you're wondering where my missing spanners are, they're probably 8km underground, I was a fitter in a coal mine!
You can drop a spanner in a muddy puddle in a pit and they're almost impossible to find!
Cheers Phil.

The older sidchrome spanners over 20 plus years old are the best and worth a small future and the size you want will be 20 dollars each no problems . I have quite a few  older sidschrome spanners In my collection . Are you chasing just open Enders or open ring ? 11/16 -3/4 ?

Thanks Glen,
I can go without, just annoying!
Just raising the issue, especially sidchrome pliers, screwdrivers, sockets and multi-grips!
Saying that they're expensive, are they selling though!
It's like a lot of cars for sale, just fishing for a foul.
Thanks for the offer anyhow!
I'll keep my eye out at swap meets? When ever we're allowed to have them!
They've also reduced the number of spanners in a set by the look of it, in sets I've seen you only get one size of each spanner, so if you have a nut and bolt you need to get another spanner from another set?

Cheers Phil.

Hi all,
Remember the $2.00 spanners from Taiwan,  have a look at what they're producing now.
King Tony, not sure if I'd buy them but they've come a long way! Forgings are much better.
And not badly priced! That's the problem, we can't compete unless we demand Australian.
Cheers Phil.

PS. A lot of my Sidchrome spanners are special also, they were handed down from family!
A life time investment also if you don't leave them in a wet toolbox!

After your post I did a bit of research. You are right "vintage spanners" are commanding very good prices.

I have a full set of McEwans spanners (made in Japan) complete in the steel case. Sockets, Open enders and Ring spanners. Rachet and Breaker bar, extensions and insulated spark plug socket.

I got them for my 21st birthday almost 40 years ago.

Always dreamed I'd have one!

I have full sets of both AF and metric Sidchrome spanners - sockets, rings, open enders, ratchets, extensions etc, about 40 pieces each. The AF set I've had for about 45 years and the metric about 35 when family cars started to need them. They're indestructible I reckon.

I guess I'll be hanging on to them.
