Title: 1970 Mach 1 RHD
Post by: daphi1 on May 05, 2021, 10:19:17 am
Hello.  I have a 1970 Mach 1 which I have owned for over 10 years.  It was converted years ago to RHD before I purchased it.  Age has crept up on me and I am looking to install power steering.  The fact it was converted before I bought it, I am assuming the steering box and suspension bits etc where probably off a Falcon, but I don't know.  My question to the knowledgeable is, would early Falcons, Fairlanes from say xw to xe era be the same steering boxes and suspension bits and be interchangeable?  I'm hoping to just get the lot off a donor vehicle, pump, lines brackets and box etc. Thanks.

Another option to consider is fitting electric power steering.

It's fitted to the steering column, so won't require any steering box or linkage changes etc

Most likely XW etc etc .  Power steering might be a  problem to fit  . You might need a XA -XC power steering box ,XF mount up different .  You can use the better XF power steering pump tho . You will need all the brackets that fit to the engine .  Is it manual steering now ? .

Yes, thanks.  Manual now with 225/60 x 15 on the front. Getting hard to manoeuvre going slow.

The downside of the electric option is that you still have the slower manual steering box ratio.

Tongue in check!!!
Can you fit a bigger steering wheel.
But seriously a lot of people in the past fitted 13" steering wheels to manual steering cars.
Sorry Phil!

Thanks Dwayne.  Looked at that but I think that would require signing off by an engineer.
