Title: Transfer of historic Rego
Post by: Chris09 on December 23, 2016, 12:24:32 pm
Hi All,

I'm searching for a 65 mustang and came across a car I really like. The car has historic rego. Can't seem to find if and how I can transfer the rego over into my name? Can this be done? Or do I need to register the car withnormal rego?

Thank you in advance

i am sure its not transferable. as selling the car the old owner will hand the plate in rms and you will have to join a club and go through the registration process.someone will correct me if i am wrong but thats how it was with hotrods.

I thought so, the existing owner couldn't tell me and I couldn't find anything on the RMS website.

Thank you

The information and links relate to NSW, other states could vary.

You cannot transfer historic rego. The owner has to hand the plates back to the RMS.
You can buy the car unregistered and all you need then is a pink slip and be a member of a car club to get it registered.
Before the owner hands the plates in see if he can drive it to your place if it's not too far away, better than getting it towed.
