Title: Queensland Auto spectacular
Post by: GLENN 70 on April 06, 2015, 09:24:52 pm
Is on again at willow bank race track (drag track)  this month Sunday 19th .  Big car show. Swap meet ,dyno shoot out and you can give your car a run down the drag strip .  Helmet (approved) long sleeves long paints and covered in shoes . I will be going and giving my 66 coupe a run .

Should be a good day out mate. Still wondering if I should run it down the track or not.

Race or not ,that's  up to you .  I know your engine is fine as is your diff ,and now you have the shelby traction bars fitted ,no axle hop .    The clutch I don't know but if its slipping don't bother . Gear box ? .

Yeh gear box is noisy now in all gears been getting worse. Sometimes under load when pushing the gear into 3rd it feels like the gear stick is pushing too far foward almost as if I have snaped it off.

Took the family out for this yesterday was a great show!
Saw some nice cars and quite a few stangs running down the quarter too!

Hey Glen - was that you in the Granny spec Red 66 with the black vinyl roof running 12's?

If it was that car looks like it is really well set up and runs very nice - sounded crisp! :burnout:

Yes it was but it wasn't going to well  (1) it was so hot. (2) the torque converter was playing up till it blew up and took the auto with it     got stuck down the end of the track with no gears bugger its a long way from the Gold Coast .

Spewing sorry to hear about that I must have missed your last run - I saw you lined up against the XD that lifted the front wheels every time he launched, he bounced towards the wall and had to get out of it. By the time he gathered it up you had him at line!

Saw a corvette out the front when we left on the side of the road looked like he had broken an axle - so you got the car home in the end?

And yeah - how hot was it :thud:

I was lucky I knew  someone that took his 67 camaro up on a car trailer so we put my car on the trailer and he drove the camaro home .    to him for his help .  And the box and converter are out and the converter is scrap metal . .

I'm thinking a 14 or 15 tbh. Blue mustang no idea I'm all over the
Place with my times on that car. If I had the time and money I'd get myself some better tyres and fix my rear springs and steering to help my cause a bit the other well the driver could always improve lol.

It was a good day today at willowbank but was bloody hot .  Plenty of nice cars and quite a few mustangs . I think I saw 4 mustangs on the track racings  :burnout: .  And 3 were from here .  Also nice to catch up with some mustang owners from here  :thumb: . And gazzab 055  it was nice to meet you also .

Was a good day out Glenn! Pretty happy about my eb 4cyl mustang it running a 14 flat and beating a fellow v8 driver 👍  Few more mods I may even get into the mid 13s!

Ryan 14.0 @ 100 mph isn't too bad . Stimo in his coupe ran 14.5 I think and around 95 mph . . Ryan for you to get down to mid 13 will need another 50 HP .
Title: Re: Queensland Auto spectacular
Post by: GLENN 70 on April 17, 2016, 08:12:55 pm
Ryan your car should run into the 13s at a night meet when its cooler . Just ask Rodney how heat plays with his car .

Great day, I really enjoyed walking around with Rod checking out all the beautiful cars.. The drags I ended up doing 7 runs which is good value :thumb: I was hoping for a 13.9 and my last few runs were close with a best of 14.085 @ 97.62 :toetapping: I'm close

Thanks and did you have a look under the back of the car ? .Rodneys new sticky 17s weren't much chop compared to the 15 inch ET streets .

No mate I didn't have a look under the back, but you can instantly tell your 70 is a high quality car, it's just a stunning Mustang and a real credit to you..For the drags my first few runs I just let the auto shift itself and my times were much better once I started shifting :thumb:

A video of my horrendous 2 only runs on Sunday, you can see in the 2nd run it is starving for fuel (I think) just as I change into top and about 40 mtrs from the timing lights down the deep end.

Rodney it was a hot day and the under hood temp would have been high . So fuel evaporation would have been the cause of that . If you took your car out tonight you would find it is running fine . Your lucky to be running a shaker scoop with cold air going into the carby ,but even on a hot day it will have heat problems . It was 30 deg on Sunday and hotter on the track I bet .

If that were the case why did it not happen before and why did it do the same thing on the highway when I wanted get up beside you (when I signalled you to see if you wanted to go for a beer) as the car was cool then and the car was cooler on the second run where it was much worse yet the first run I was sitting in the pre staging lanes forever with the motor running because as they were about to bring me on to the track they decided to bring that drag car out to put on his show with flames throwing out everywhere etc.

Take it now and try it ,its the only way to tell .  Even on the hwy it was still around 30 deg outside . My cars hate the heat of the day not just under hood temp .  Sandra's car losers about 4 tents and 4 mph on a hot day and thats a late model fuel injected engine .

Why? I had it out the day before removing those red and blue lines that were on the tyres and no issues then and temperatures were similar to what it was on the way home.

Yes Ryan  14 flat is very good , and that's as quick as my old 6 cyl valiant  ,   a 1971  model and that was built well before you were born  and that was a factory built car  and no turbo charger .  That's if you know what a valiant is   as they haven't been built since the dark ages nearly  :lmao: . Not quite as quick tho only ran a 14.1 at 101 mph ,tyres weren't as good back then and no concrete at start line for better traction .

And Ryan those times were recorded at a place called surfers paradise international raceway which on the main straight  had a drag strip 1/4 mile . A few of us from here use to race at that track back in the day . Also my old  71. GTHO recorded a 14.1 at 105 mph  ,out of a 4 speed manual .

I've done lots of laps around Surfers back in the day. The buzz was going under the bridge flat out without being able to see the apex. But back to drags ... I was able to hear the drag races from my home up in Tallai. I remember the cops used to run "Operation Drag" in the day and had a modified Commodore Police Car. I think Joe at "The Brock Shop" prepared it but can't be sure.

Ryan your a young cheeky shit  .  And yes pedro I lived just out of surfers and you could hear the dragsters at the night meets . I also put the R/T charger and the HO around the track ,was fun that's for sure . I was young to own those types  of cars ,and I bought the R/T not long after I got my licence and because my dad wouldn't let me have a V8  :lmao: . If he only knew how quick they were  :smile01: .

Pedro operation drag ,yes that was in the later years after the track closed . The cops wanted the street racers off the streets on the Gold Coast so they used part of the old straight. About  200 m not the 400 m  because of the inside air field that was still been used . Yes the cops built a commodore race car but before that they had a mustangs I think with a 351 w . I was one of the scrutineers for operation drag for a while . They closed the race track because the Japaneese bought the golf course next to the track and it was too noisy so they bought it and it sat for many years falling apart .
