Title: What tricks do you have for cleaning your car
Post by: boss69hogg on December 10, 2011, 09:03:36 am
Having just discovered "Purple" and finding so many others who have known of it for ages makes me ponder.

What tricks or products do you use to keep your car gleaming? I've heard of Mr Sheen for the paint and not sure if it is safe or not.

This is put out to those in the know to pass on their experience and knowledge for others.

Cheers

G'Day, Boss69Hogg,
I've been using Mr Sheen, or the lower priced alternatives for 20 years on all my cars without problems. It is basically a spray on silicone and can also be used on side and rear windows and mirrors to help disperse water. I give my cars a proper polish once per year and use Mr Sheen on them every 2nd wash. Bog easy to use and protects well. Your average spray painter will hate it unless they know to use a silicone remover prior to any repairs.
Another tip which I,ve only recently found is to remove dried on well cooked bugs from your car, give them a good soaking in WD 40 or RP7 both work well. I do 10 or 15 mins prior to washing the car.
Cheers, Ron B

Back when I was a young bloke I used Mr Sheen.
Until a car detailer mate of mine informed that it has wax in it.
Its ok for furniture timber which it was designed for but not so good on metal. Wax attracts dirt and dust.

I now use Voodoo as a spray on product it’s not cheap at around $50 for a large can but does last ages. It’s been around for a few years and is now in stock in most good shops.
It’s a wipe on wipe off no hard rubbing or polishing. You can use it on glass metal and on dash and seats.
If you like Mr Sheen you will love this stuff.

Warm water with just a few drops of clear vinegar or ammonia
works well on windows.
It cuts the grease build up.
Always best to buff off with a loop pile rag/towel though.

Don't let the wife anywhere near it is Rule #1, only happened after she told me she used a green scourer to get some sap off the boot of my falcon!!

Learnt after this episode how to detail, and can highly recommend hanging around some specific detailing forums to learn the tricks of the trade and what the best latest products are. Favourite one is detail addiction, awesome guys on there!!

Use extra fine steel wool on exhaust tips and whitewalls.
To protect wheel paint from being scratched when removing wheels, slip a patch of thin clear plastic over the wheelnuts before you remove them.
