Wait, there's more, this is not your only option, that's just what I would do,
If an engine has been sitting for a long time , it can't just be started up an be expected to run reliably,
Any rubber based gaskets will have perished to a degree, the bottom of the sump will be sludge, the carby will most definitely leak in time, water pump could be done too,
I'm not trying to rain on your new project but there are many thing to address before you can jump in an go for a cruise and expect to get back home,

Hey Marcelo,
Welcome to the forum, the one thing about purchasing an old car is you never get bored, there is always something to do and your plans always evolve,
If the engine hasn't been run for some time you have to do some basic stuff before your enthusiasm kicks in,
I would pull the heads off and see how worn the tops off the cylinders are,you can feel with your finger nail a "lip" which can guage wear, and if your engine has been to the moon and back,
If so your engine could be up for a basic rebuild,
Do not think this is a wasted expense, you are future proofing your car,how far you go with a rebuild is up to you, this is where you need to do your homework,
Basic rebuild ( ex factory) or various stages of modification,
Plenty to think about, just be open to advice, there are plenty of mechanics that will have a go at old cars, not as many actually know what they are doing,
That's what this forum is for..,

Hey Marcelo,
Welcome to the Mustang forum!

A great question you ask,
Depends on what you want and expect!
Performance or Cruise!

1967 Fastback Mustang is a great start!

The 289 engine has plenty of punch.

You can spend many years and dollars on your new build, and at the end is it the car you now want! if you modify it the jobs may roll on one after another,
Or you be happy from the start with what you've got.

IMO enjoy what you've got.

I started a subject on the forum,

Now you've completed your restomod is it what you really want? need?

Others may disagree, but I'd keep it simple, reliable and a joy to drive!

Cheers Phil.

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and excited to be part of this Mustang loving community !! I have recently purchased a 1967 Mustang Fastback and while the body is in decent shape the engine is another story it's the original 289 V8 but it hasn't been started in over a decade.

I would love some advice from those with experience restoring classic Mustang engines. Specifically ::-

First steps: What should I check or replace before attempting to start the engine: ??
Upgrades vs. keeping it stock: Should I prioritize keeping everything original or are there modern upgrades that are worth it for performance and reliability: ??
Recommended tools or resources: Any go to tools, manuals or websites for a beginner tackling their first rebuild: ??

Looking forward to your insights !! I am eager to give this Mustang the love it deserves and get it back on the road where it belongs.

With Regards,
Marcelo Salas

Technical - General / Re: T5 Gearbox

Hi! Yes, the T5 transmission from a mid-1995 Falcon and a 1995 Mustang V6 can be interchangeable to some extent, as both use similar T5 models. However, there may be differences in bellhousing patterns, input shaft lengths, and mounting points that could require modifications. You might need to adapt the input shaft or swap the bellhousing for a proper fit with the Mustang's engine. Consulting a transmission specialist or referencing a detailed compatibility chart can help ensure the swap goes smoothly.
