Title: 1965 260V8
Post by: Reborn67 on December 18, 2023, 09:23:00 pm
Hey Gents, question for the mechanics,
Apart from the puritans, has anyone rebuilt a 260V8, is it worth it or is it easier to upgrade to a 289 or 302

A 260 is a 5 bolt and the 289 /302 is 6, therefore you need a different bell housing. Although inch’s are free power 4.3 vs 4.9 12% increase in power, you will notice that.

Something to consider:
I have 5 Bolt 289 A-Code & according to the guy that rebuilt my C4, the input shaft was smaller than the later ones. If your tranny is ok, it might be easier to rebuild & stroke your original engine.

Early 289's were 5 bolt too.

I have only limited access to this car at the moment, it’s plated as being a June ‘65 F code build and it had an interior that was listed as late 64, so it seems to me that it was built with overflow parts, haven’t been able to establish if the engine is original yet, or how good the conversion job was, they didn’t do the wipers as so many didn’t..,

I have a ‘64 289 D-code and it’s 5 bolts

I would go to a good mechanic and ask to open the engine and check if it has been rebuilt before. If not, I would investigate a rebuilt + stroke( costs, if doable, etc).

Really the only difference between a 260 and an early 5 bolt 289 is the bore so if the bore hasn't already been opened up you'll end up with a 289 anyway and if it has you probably already have one.

Even if you bored it out 0.040” it is only 266ci,
They can’t be bored safely any more than that,
It appears custom size pistons etc for these are rare and pricey, the more research l do the less practical it becomes..,
