Title: Oil Filter for S550 GT - 2017 Mustang
Post by: scollist on May 19, 2019, 07:33:38 pm
EDIT 1/6/2019
After posting this same information on another forum it has been stated that Ford fits a smaller filter (to save money) to all LHD and RHD S550 Mustangs, and then this filter is replaced by a larger Motorcraft service filter - FL-500S at the first service.

As other replies on both forums indicate that the larger filter is definitely in place on some already serviced vehicles, and others have been able to fit this larger filter without any issues, then I suggest going with the larger FL-500S filter.

The other equivalents, as quoted by SuperCheapAuto and Repco are:
- Ryco Z928
- K&N PS-2011 or HP-2011

But note that the Ford Motorcraft FL-500S appears to be the cheapest alternative when sourced from the dealership parts dept. at less than $10 each.

Hi everyone,

Just thought I’d shared the trials I encountered this weekend while trying to do my own oil change on the 2017 Mustang GT.

The oil filter for a Right Hand Drive (RHD) Mustang GT is NOT the Ryco Z928 that SuperCheapAuto, Repco etc. will tell you by using their lookup systems. This is the LHD US version and is longer than the RHD version.

The oil filter for RHD is shorter and is actually a Ryco Z663 or Mobil 1 M1-113 (this is the actually the same filter as used by HSV Commodores - 6.0 and 6.2 from about 2006 onwards).

I hope that helps somebody.

Cheers
Shane

Hmm. Was going to do an oil change this weekend but local dealers parts department was closed on Saturday.
Only like using the Motorcraft filter.

Would be a very tight fit to get it threaded on, but obviously do-able. The larger volume would be preferable.

You take the front wheel off and come in from the side where the plastic panel is , it's not an easy job because of that panel . Trying to do it from under the car just doesn't work .

With the shorter filter I didn’t need to take the wheel off (having a hoist does help though).

Picked up a couple of Motorcraft oil filters from the dealer for
$16.80, cheaper than the Ryco at Bursons for $19.00.

Just an update after getting some feedback on another forum.

Another owner removed their filter and found they had a Motorcraft FL-500S in place, which is same size as a Ryco Z928. I assume that this was fitted by a Ford dealership at a previous service.

Similar to Glenn, he didn't have any problems getting the Z928 on when the wheel was removed to allow access from via the wheel-well.

So I might try the Z928 next time given the greater volume.
