Brake booster enquiries
« on: August 08, 2021, 05:17:27 pm »
On my 69 Mustang with disc/drum brakes the PBR VH40 brake booster has shit itself and I've been trying to source a replacement. The best I can do is close to $1,000 and I can get a VH44 for under $200. Will the smaller unit work and has anyone used one. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers Ken

Have you tried PBR in Holden Hill, SA?

I spoke to a brake guy in Darwin NT last week who at one time reconditioned them but said he no longer does because he could not get parts. I got online today and all the places that sell them in the $500 to $600 range have sold out so I assume they are a bit hard to get at the moment. There is a place that advertises them for $999 but that is pretty expensive and another guy who does a changeover unit for $400 but he is in Melbourne and will only deal face to face. I will ring around in the next few days but was just wondering if the VH44 would work

And I drive past fairly regularly too, so if shipping is an issue at all I'm happy to help.

If you go with the Melbourne changeover option that will only deal face to face I'm happy to help, presuming that we get out of lockdown for long enough.

Thanks for the kind offers Geoff and Dwayne. I might be onto a local company that can recondition mine. I'll let you know how it goes

Hi Ken, I have a vh 40 on my 71 sportsroof that needed reconditioning that I did myself with the parts bought online. If you pay attention to how the booster comes apart you can recondition them yourself. About $200 for a rebuild kit. Alternatively you can post the whole thing to Power Brakes in South Australia and they will recondition it for you and test it as well, check their website. Cheers from John

I got my VH40 from Hydroboost in Echuca VIC, $295 swap over or $395 outright in 2017. VH40 is more powerful than VH44. Powdercoated was $40 more than the base price, chrome $100 more (these are the old 2014 prices).

I would go straight to them as people seem to be selling old boosters for $150 and you don't know anything about it's condition or its power. 2 boosters can look the same but one can be an 800 psi unit where the other is 1500 psi. If you get the wrong unit, you will either have very poor brakes or supersensitive brakes that want to throw you through the windscreen every time you use them.

In my case, Terry recommended a 1300 psi booster and I have it hidden under the guard upfront with a stone shield on it.

Lots of useful info on their site. What I really liked was when you ring them up they ask you all the right questions such as size of front and rear brakes, what master cylinder you are running etc to tell you what power booster you need. They also supply the brackets and can even help with master cylinder setups.
