Re: Time for an update - Fun and games on the Nullarbor Plain
« Reply #800 on: March 26, 2013, 04:41:26 pm »
The convoy was scheduled to drive 986 klm today which should have taken 11.5 hours, but i received a phone call a short while back to say they had just arrived at Nullabor having only travelled 286klm so far today. Yep... Fun and Games on the Nullarbor Plain.

Yesterday the coil was replaced on Tony`s Boss and then they kept travelling, but later in the day had another breakdown. This time they took the carby off Jeremy`s Blue Mach 1 ( the Blue Mach1 was on the car trailer ) and swapped it to Tony`s Boss. This improved things with the car and they made it to Ceduna last night.

This morning the car started playing up again and they were stuck on the side of the road for 3 hours trying to get the car started. In the end they changed the distributor over with the distributor for the Blue Mach 1, but it did not fit and the shaft ended up being broken off the Blue Mach1 distributor. ( Tony`s car has a Cleveland engine)

Ended up they took the Blue Mach 1 off the car trailer and loaded Tony`s Boss. To get the Blue Mach1 going the distributor was removed from the Red Mach1 and fitted to the Bue Mach1.
HaHa - anybody remember the trip back from Newcastle - Similar problems but different car.

Tony and Trish are now driving the Blue Mach1. I will take a replacement distributor for the Red mach1 tomorrow on the Plane, and KimT will take a replacement distributor for Tony`s Boss.

In another frightening incident, Ron was overtaking a truck and clipped his car trailer with a wheel on the truck. Big moment as Ron`s car trailer went sideways off the road. Everybody behind thought Ron`s rig was going to roll over, but Ron being a very good and experienced driver managed to power out of it. Lucky man! I bet he suffered in his jocks!

The convoy have just left Nullarbor and still have 700klm to drive today. They will not arrive at their overnight stop till about 9pm.

Rocket.

Just wanted to bring this post to the current page.

Spoke with Fiona at 4pm. They left Border Village about half an hour ago after the entire convoy had all their baggage checked by the WA Quarantine/ Border Patrol. This slowed them up even further. They still have about 500klm to their overnight stop.

It has already been raining and Fiona said they are heading into some very dark storm clouds. I am sure they will all be extremely happy to arrive at their destination tonight. :therethere:

Please pass on a message (if you can) to everyone travelling, to be extremely aware of roo's, donkeys, and camels when dusk approaches. During the day they may see a few, but leading into dusk, and then for most of the night, they all seem to materialize from every where. Here's hoping to happy and safe travelling.

So, does this mean Tony now has two cars to detail in Perth?

Hi 69Grande - Great car by the way - quite partial to Grandes :thumb:

Will pass on your message. Maybe they should put Ron and Brett up front of the convoy because they both have big rigs, although i do not think much would save them from hitting a Donkey or Camel. Yikes :bolt:

Thanks.

Hi Malscar, Good idea
But no, we would not expect that because he will have more than enough on his plate. Tony is always busy organising things and keeping all of us in check. :thumb:

We might chase up one of the WA guys who were offering the use of a hoist so that we can clean the undercarriage of the Blue Mach1. It was pristine underneath when it went up on the trailer, but they are driving through a heavy rainband at the moment - so it is going to be a bit messy underneath now :thud:

Will try to ring them shortly for an update on their progress.

Hi Brett, I just got off the phone to Jeremy.

Convoy is making progress, but slowly. They are down to about 80klm/hr due to very strong winds and Wildlife. There are Emus and Kangaroos all over the place. Told them to watch out for Camels and Donkeys as well.

They drove through heavy rain for about half an hour, followed by what Jeremy called a Power Shower ( torrential rain ) for 10 minutes or so. He said they all had to back right off the throttle and leave plenty of room between cars.

Skies have now cleared somewhat and Ron is at the front relaying info via CB about Wildlife. It is very muggy.

They are still about 200klm from tonights destination, very tired but in good spirits. All the cars are going well.

Think they will be too tired to post tonight.

Not quite son. Brings back a lot of memories

I have not heard from the boys since last night. Can only assume they made it into Balladonia last night without further drama.

Today is the final push into Perth for the convoy. Some 946klm to go which should take about 11 hours all going well. Weather forecast is for a mild day -

http://weather.ninemsn.com.au/wa/central-wheatbelt/merredin

Light winds at 10-20klm/hr, mainly sunny and a max temp of 22 degrees makes for a great day to be out cruising in the Mustangs.

Hi Mark, Jeremy sounded very tired when i spoke to him last night. It was a heck of a very long day for the convoy so they are probably all snoring their heads off right now. :smile01:

The news is all good.

Everybody rolled in about 1hour ago. No problems with the cars today, but a LOT of cleaning to do tomorrow after everybody has had a good rest.

Have taken some photos which I will upload later.

I can tell you this resort we are staying at is superb. It has manicured lawns and gardens, excellent rooms and facilities. This is going to be fun.

Hi Kim, Had not heard that one. Maybe they could just look for them on the way home.

Hi Chris and Sally, It is all really one big adventure. We know anything can happen to any car along the way so best to just deal with it and keep going. The car trailer comes in handy. :thumb:
Hope you join us on the next one.

Hi Guys, Been having all sorts of problems getting on the net and using photofarket :kickass:

Did write a post with photos last night then lost the whole lot upon posting. Try again -

Some photos of the crew arriving -

Tony and Trish

Garry and Christine -

Ron -

Brad and Fi -

Jeremy and Luke - That is Justin and Luke in the photo -

Brett and Angie

The group unwinding after the trip

It is only 8.30am here, the group have just gone down for a nice buffet breakfast, then into some serious cleaning afterwards.

Brad has just given me his 4G USB Modem, so if I have any further problems with the net I will switch to that one.

The flight over took just over 3 hours. Did look for the convoy out of the window -

Then gave the girls a fright -

Very unhappy with hurts car rentals at the airport. Tried to stick us into a black car with hail damage, severe water marks and swirls. Told them to stick it where the sun don't shine. Ended up with a decent car after a long walk back to the counter. Noticed the avis and budget cars look a whole lot cleaner as I walked past.

The roads in Perth are a delight to drive on. Nice and wide with courteous drivers to boot.

Liking Perth so far.
