Title: Cracks in Shock Tower?!?!?!
Post by: BLKPNY on March 20, 2006, 07:34:02 pm
I have found a large crack in the RH front shock tower in my 66. Is this common? I have a mild 351w in mine, would this have caused it? thanks

G'day,
           this is most common to V8 cars than sixes.
It is a stress crack, and needs professional attention.
Do not give it to the first guy you see...price here is irrelevant, its what they do about it that matters!

Is it around the top wishbone bolts holes...
there is strengthening kits..around ie cal mustang...

or

you could fit rrs struts that by design take away the stress in that area...

Common to have shock tower cracks created by stess on V8 cars, the extra (not that much extra) weight of the 351 windsor, would not make a huge difference.

They only weigh about an extra 25 or so pounds i think.
Have the crack proffesionally repaired by MIG welding and install an export brace if you don't already have one.

Also check upper spring insulators and shock absorber mounts and upper control arm shaft bushes. Check the bolts that go through the upper shaft, through your shok tower also.;}
