Title: Does anyone have a ‘69 with Tilt Steering?
Post by: jiffy on August 18, 2021, 05:45:55 pm
Ideally looking for some photos about how the actuator mounts next to the column under the dash.
And also how the wiring goes and where does the big vacuum canister go??

Cheers
Jeff

Hi Jeff. I can help you with all that. I have tilt steering on my car.
The actuator mounts on the bottom edge of the dash roughly under where the ignition is beside the  right hand side of steering column.. Should be one screw and a locating tab.
The vacuum cannister sits on the outside of the side skirt of your engine bay directly under where the battery sits. The vacuum plugs in from inside the engine bay to it.
If you're on your phone touch image for better view.
I have all the schematics so if you have any questions just ask.

From the actuator there is a plug that connects to the wiring loom under the dash. You might have to search for it but it should be located somewhere near where the actuator sits There should be another green and yellow stripe wire i think it is from the actuator or it may be part of the cars wiring loom. I cant remember exactly .  It may even be part of the door jamb wiring loom switch. That's something you can check .This goes into a funny looking yellow plug with 3 holes thats over on the left hand side of the steering column.
The tilt is actuated when you open the door via a switch. It looks like the interior light switch. I reckon you could even use one in its place but don't quote me on that. They work in exactly the same fashion. It sits below the light switch in your door jamb. The wires for the tilt switch run off the same  loom from the interior light from memory.

Okay now the vacuum lines. The one with the white stripe that comes from the actuator pops out through the centre of the fire wall and plugs into a three way valve seperator .
The hose to the left of the  black white stripe hose goes to the cannister & the one I'm holding goes to the inlet manifold.

Wiring schematics.
Ive said it before but please check the wiring diagram before going ahead to confirm what ive said.
The last thing i want to do is unintentionally give the wrong advice.

BTW. You can also activate the tilt manually by pulling on the cable from the steering column. It's was pretty hard on my car but having the steering wheel tilted away allows you more room to work in that upside down messed up position with the seat in the way. Lol.
Good luck and don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Hi P8triot - these photos are FANTASTIC!
Wow - I think I have it pretty much right - a couple of things I need to go check though - I'm not sure I have the power feed wire going off to that 3-way power block - I'll have to go check.

Interestingly, I don't have that 3-way vacuum splitter valve thingy. I "think" (assumed) it was in the actual vacuum canister itself.

My canister has two vacuum hose fittings:

I'm wondering if this little valve is incorporated into the canister?

As far as the hoses go, well - I thought that one came from the intake manifold, and the other went to the vacuum motor on the steering column.

I followed this diagram that I found on the West Coast Classic Cougar forum:

Can you please confirm how many vacuum hoses your vacuum canister under the battery tray has going to it - 1 or 2??
That would probably make diagnosis of this setup a little easier.

Hi mate, no probs glad to help.
My canister has only a single port that goes directly to the valve.
Your canister might have a built in valve like you said hence the twin port which in that case should do the same job hopefully.
Maybe try breathing in on one then the other through the hose to see if one works like a one way valve.
I think from memory the side that acts like a valve goes to the manifold.

Ok - the car actually runs now, which is a step in the right direction.
I’m finding that the relay trips as soon as I connect the battery whether the door is open or not.
I’m a little in the dark about when the tilt operates and whether the driver has to do anything other than open the door?
I’ll send you a PM.
Thanks
