Title: 63.5 Galaxie
Post by: jiffy on August 02, 2019, 03:48:12 pm
Here's my journey so far. Found a lovely looking 63.5 on Craigslist.
Had it inspected by Auto Appraisals Group and it got a clean bill of health by their Ford expert.

(tip: DO NOT USE these MF'rs...)

Car turned up and after rebuilding the suspension, steering, diff and replacing the exhaust, work started on these issues:

This is the painter/panel-beater. Great work, and a hard worker, but young - with all that implies.

So now comes reassembly. I have the majority of the trim on, the lights and grille are in, just about to put the bumpers on, then comes the headliner and windscreens, then I need to figure out the electric windows, lob in the interior and drive.

I think it'll look exactly like the car I bought, only it will BE sound rather than just LOOK sound....

Good story!!! sort of. It will be a killa car when your done. Then you can get back to the yucky old 4 speed, if you stop playing with the 67 soft top

This is why I tell people / buyers not to trust anyone when buying a classic without checking it out themselves .  You learnt the hard way ,but I hope it all goes well for you 👍

Yeah I thought that having a 10 page report with nearly 100 photos was enough for me to outlay $55K for a car in the US. I now realise that I was incredibly lucky that body-wise it was everything the seller said it was......mechanically, not so much.
When I bought my Corvette it wasn't too difficult to convince 2 of my sons to accompany me on a trip to the US to look for a car. This time we were able to go over the car pretty well and it was everything it was supposed to be.

Making some progress...

Headliner is next, then front/rear windscreens.
Rear bumper is a tad too far left and the RHS rubs the passenger quarter trim. A job for another day....

So - a while back I saw an advert for a '63 427 driveline "pulled from a wrecked galaxie in 64" and sat under a bench since.

Of course - another one of them. Yup...

So, I pulled the trigger and bought it - and unbelievably it was as described.
The shipping company 'lost it' en route, which was nice, but it eventually turned up in a warehouse in New York, so I got it in the end.

I opened the box, and there it was - a 63.5 dated 427 CO with twin carbs, T-10, long-tube cast-iron headers etc. So, I pulled the box apart and put it on a stand.

It was missing the distributor, valve covers and fuel canister, but it had the correct carbs, original fuel pump, original Autolite 'black-cross' plugs, there was no witness marks on the flywheel - so I was increasingly confident that it was actually as described, so I thought if I removed the heads, then I'd know:

So, the original head gaskets, bumper pistons and the condition of the bore suggests that it is indeed a very low mileage engine. I haven't tried to turn it over, so it can sit and wait until the Galaxie is on the road, and probably until the Mach1 is finished, then it can get looked at.
I found an internally balanced 428 crank and some nice H-beam conrods, so it'll get freshened up, compression lowered and stroked before it goes back in.

Should be able to get out of its own way after that...

Just to refresh your memory

You told me at the time that they were on the way.
I'm starting to forget what parts I've already got ... find them when I put another one on a shelf.
Should try to find time to put some on the car so that I can see whats left.
A very grave thing.

ha - yes, I know what you mean - I thought (as they were missing from the 427) that I better get a set of Adjustable rockers sorted out.
So, I looked through my boxes, found a set of used adjustable rockers, stripped and cleaned them and checked them out.
Several were pretty badly scored up where crap had come out of the oiling hole, so I thought about 6 could use a reco.

I managed to find a half dozen good ones in the US, and ordered those, plus a pair of new rocker shafts, so when they arrive, I can clean, oil and assemble them.

All good!!

Then a mate came around, asked if I had a waterpump. Was looking around to find one suitable, moved a box that was a lot heavier than I was expecting, so wondered what was in there. Turned the box around to read the label (NEW ADJUSTABLE ROCKERS).

A full set I'd bought a few years before...

Have been battling with a speedo that wouldn't work for the past month or so.
Tried all sorts of speedo gears on the end of the cable - have a spare T-10 and had the same issue with both: the worm gear on the output shaft wouldn't turn the speedo cable gear.

This is the existing cable and gear:
so had my local machine shop (https://www.yellowpages.com.au/vic/rowville/c-w-davis-cylinder-heads-12257719-listing.html) who made up a new spigot for the end of the speedo cable - in which the centre boss the cable runs through and the gear sits on - was at a 3mm off-set so I could turn the cable around to bring the gears closer together so they could mesh, and the worm gear on the output shaft would turn the gear and the cable and therefore the speedo would work.

Tested it and all seemed ok, so cut the end off the cable, then crimped the new end onto the speedo cable and wouldn't you know it:

Happy days are not far off....

Nice shiny new Romac balancer!!

top end starts next week hopefully - original '63 427 heads, new valves, springs, rockers & pushrods.

It's been a long time coming, but the Galaxie is always waiting....

ok - engine was on the dyno - not disappointed by the outcome but felt there might have been a few HP's left on the table. 422hp and 493lbft but only 34 degrees total.

https://youtu.be/g81CQRd5UMc (https://youtu.be/g81CQRd5UMc)

Biggest concern was the time taken to build oil pressure and how fast I lost it afterwards - I need to get to the bottom of this before it goes in....

Title: Re: 63.5 Galaxie
Post by: jiffy on October 09, 2023, 04:29:14 pm
ok, so - update on the 427, and latest on the Galaxie...

Well - I thought I'd found the smoking gun, but I didn't.

Then, I did!

So, I pulled the oil filter adapter and had a look at the gasket surface and the adapter - on early 427 FE engines, there is an odd extra hole in the pad, NFI what it's for.

Worryingly, there is only the merest suggestion of a gasket surface between that drain hole and the channel for the oil pump, which - if it failed - could allow oil pressure to drain straight back into the oil pan.
So, there should be the oil pump hole, the oil gallery hole (for the rest of the engine) and 4 bolt holes. You can see the extra, small hole sitting there serving no discernible purpose. The oil filter adapter gasket (which is pretty shitty to be honest) only has the smallest amount of gasket between the oil channel and this hole (at about 11 o'clock), so I put a new gasket on there, and blocked the hole so it couldn't dump oil pressure there again..

But - that wasn't the issue.

So, I checked on the oil pressure relief valve at the back of the engine above the CAM. Very hard to find pics of the valve, or how it goes in, but I found this pic:
Which might be the one the engine builder used during reassembly as when I removed the plug on the back of the block, I found this:
The first thing out should have been the valve, not the spring (and there were 2 springs in there, not one) - this is how it's meant to look when reassembling:

So, with the valve and spring arranged like that, the valve was leaving the oil-bleed hole in the block (here it is on a 427 side oiler, but it's the same thing on a top oiler above the cam):
(https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.850a02101c32db8c8dbd02ed413e1d51?rik=LFGeHB+R7uumxA&riu=http://www.wrljet.com/fordv8/images/427so-relief.jpg&ehk=Ylkg3ziOBGeGuA3JhqGWLeYj6jc2L9kIilPVbzhDtzU=&risl=&pid=ImgRaw&r=0&sres=1&sresct=1)

So, as a final check, I removed the big-end bearing caps for 4 & 8 and they were perfect, so as far as I'm concerned, we're off to the races and the new engine can go in once I have done the next things....
Title: Re: 63.5 Galaxie

so, over the last couple of weekends I've been getting the trusty 352 ready to pull, and (other than forgetting to pull the clutch inspection pan and the starter duuuur) it came out a treat!

Now that the engine bay is clear, the new owners of the 352 will be coming to pick it up in a couple of weeks (it's going to replace a tired old 2-barrel 332 in a '59 Tank Fairlane, so that will be a nice improvement), then the disc brakes can go in at the front, then the A/C setup, then a general clean up and then the 427 can go in.

More pics to follow soon.... (well, soon-ish, to be fair)

you have been busy!!. Lucky to find the problem!!
Title: Re: 63.5 Galaxie
Post by: jiffy on January 08, 2024, 04:38:30 pm
latest project has been to replace the off-set pivot shafts used in the lower control arms:
These are the arms that were factory installed, as the suspension compresses, the shaft turns and alters the geometry. It makes the suspension plush at low speeds but vague and floaty at higher speeds.
So, I replaced them with these straight shafts made by a guy (Paul Turner) in Australia and I have to say they fitted up a treat, very well made:
I lobbed in a set of new lower control arm bushes because the ones in there appeared to be the originals and they were extremely fcuked.

I now am about to fit a disc brake conversion kit to improve the stopping power (and hopefully no more brake fade!!)

Then I'm adding a Classic Auto A/C kit (because it's bloody hot in QLD!)

and if I get all that right, then the 427 can go in and I might be able to drive it again! How good would that be?

Nah - have to run 15's to clear Disc brakes and I think originals were 14's?

Anyway - running the chrome wheels from the photos above...
Title: Re: 63.5 Galaxie
Post by: jiffy on April 23, 2024, 11:55:07 am
so, brakes are in and done - I haven't bled them yet because it's entirely likely that the master/booster will have to come out for the engine to go in, so I'll likely be doing that.
The engine bay will get a bit of a clean up before then, and I have new rubber curtains that cover the front suspension about to go in....

The booster needing vacuum fed to it raised an issue I hadn't considered - where to draw the vacuum from the intake to power it...
I had a look at the manifold and the only place to draw vacuum from was a boss that hadn't been drilled yet, so I would have to remove the carbs, rockers, pushrods etc to get the manifold off so I could drill and tap it - wasn't really looking forward to that very much...

So I had a look around and figured that I would be better off removing the PCV setup (again) and drilling and tapping the side of the brass fitting that the PCV fitting screws into:
Others have done something similar and apparently there is enough vacuum as the PCV isn't in operation all the time - so: fingers crossed!!
