Title: Mustang Inspection
Post by: Rick on December 18, 2018, 01:41:07 am
I am Flying over from Perth to look at a 69 Mach 1 that I am going to buy if its in great condition but need someone to help with the Inspection of the car. Unfortunately I can only come over on the 27th Dec so no shops are open to get a Mechanic out to check the car over,
So I was wondering if anyone experienced is bored on the 27th Dec and is willing to help a Guy out. I have owned two Mach1's before but its always good to get an Independent view as we buy with our Heart most of the times ;)
Send me a message if anyone is interested.
Thanks

might be a good idea to mention where you want the inspection done, state etc.

I think its clear the car is in Victoria given where you've posted the request but it could help if you indicate exactly where the car is.

Or if someone can recommend a good Garage, I will try to call then to see if they are open, I can drop the car off for a check over, somewhere close to Hallam as I dont know Melbourne

Try Hallam Performance. 8 David Lee Rd Hallam. 03 9702 3030. Recommended to me by another MOCA member and I used them recently for an exhaust manifold fix. Lots of old and performance cars there, but not necessarily Mustang specialist.

I have owned two Mach1's before

Then you know exactly what to look for!

Just park your emotions for the duration of the inspection and you'll be OK.  :thumb:

Oh, OK - for a second I thought the guy had sold it out from under you...

Looks nice from the pics, but you'd need to be an expert on what's original vs. not with CJ cars as that represents a fair part of their value.  I know the first thing the experts here will pick on - the cheap Grant steering wheel in place of the original rimblow item.

I'm sure you've done your homework, but anyway here's the current info on the car as far as VicRoads are concerned:

Results for 69cjbb as at 26/12/2018 09:14 AEDT
Registration number: 69CJBB
Registration status & expiry date: Current - 28/10/2019
Vehicle: 1969 BLUE FORD COUPE
VIN/Chassis: 9R02R127370
Engine number: 5J16
Registration serial number: 5514505
Compliance plate date: Not available
Sanction(s) applicable: None
Goods carrying vehicle: No
Transfer in dispute: No

Obviously that engine number is not the correct format for the car so either the motor is not original or the engineer/RWC inspector couldn't find the number and stamped a new one.

Good luck tomorrow!  :thumb:

So how did you go?

Not Good, wasnt even a 428 engine in the car ;) For me thats looking for something Orginal it wasnt the car for me at that price. So the Search goes on and if anyone wants to sell or thinking about it then get a message to me before the wife takes the money for something boring like a House Deposit ;)

In hindsight the engine number should have been your first clue -  an original 1969 CJ motor should be stamped with a partial VIN on it somewhere.  You could then have asked the seller and he would have either had to come clean or lie and hope you were too ignorant to find out.

I notice the car still comes up as 'deposit taken' and 'unavailable' on CarSales but has also been updated as having a 427 top-oiler motor so just wondering what's going on there?  In any event they are being a bit optimistic asking for $109K for a CJ car without a correct motor.

In Hindsight I was too Eager and should have done my Homework and asked more Questions but THANKS to Jiffy in here and his Brother who both came with me and helped with the inspection I saved myself alot of money.
Its so good to know that there are still some honest Good people left in this world. Jeff took nearly the whole day to show me some great Victorian Hospitality .
