Hi, I am new to this forum. I just picked up a 1965 coupe :) :) :)
I have had a few classic cars before this one.
Sorry for the dodgy pic, but this was my Mustang I owned from the late 90's to early 2000's. It was an original GT K code 4 speed car. I payed about $15,000 for it. I drove it everyday as my only car for about 3 years, and then bought a second car as I didn't want to wear it out. Shouldn't have done that, as I ended up hardly driving it, then decided since I don't drive it I may as well sell it.

About a year or two ago I bought this 1963 and a half Falcon hardtop 260 V8 auto. I was getting it ready for a rwc and took it to the early Falcon car show. Some guy insisted on buying it, and in a moment of weekness I sold it. Should have kept it...

Nice cars, is there a pic of the new car?
-
I don't have any good pics of it yet. But will take some today hopefully. I took the car down to the local Mustang guys, they pointed out the motor has been lowered and has an engine brace that I never noticed. It has a Shelby bonnet, Shelby front valance and a Shelby drop. Rollbar bolted in with seatbelt mounts. Engine is a rebuilt 302 with a cam and lots of bits bolted to it. Sounds very good with the extractors and nice twin system. It has every MSD ignition part you could buy. Big wide sump to stop the crank from hitting the ground over bumps. Sits nice and low too. 4 speed with new high performance clutch and billet flywheel. 3.55 geared disc braked 9" with new true track LSD. It looks like someone was setting it up as a track car in the states. It even has breather lines in the rocker covers going to a catch can.
Inside is in good condition and includes a Dakota digital dash and Lecara steering wheel. It has 15" D thrust wheels, but I bought some in the same style but 17". I will see what I prefer the look of once I get the car back on club rego. The 15's do suit the car.
I want to sort any issues the car may have, or change things I am not happy with. Things like the steering wheel might be better to be deep dish to give me more leg room getting in and out. Air conditioning would be nice. I may raise the rear a little, I think it's bottoming out on the bigger bumps.

I took this pic on the way home.

Looking forward to hearing more about this car. Welcome to the forum.
-
I hope you had a nice drive back from bright, I was going to check that car out for a friend on Sunday if you hadn't bought it
-
Does anyone have a recommendation for a new windscreen installed? I am in Bentleigh, so close to home will suit. Windscreen has a couple of chips and doesn't pass a rwc.
-
Try Pete from Pete's Prestige Windscreens 0418333703. Great work and will do it at your home.
-
I rang Shannon's who I just insured the car with an hour earlier. They are doing the windscreen for me on Monday.

Seems like a lot of people wanted to buy it. I think it's pretty good value. It is nice around bright, just a pity it's so far. From Wadonga it's not too far.
-
You may notice the red theme. I seem to often buy red cars. Even my wagon I bought new is red, but it's a Holden with a 6.2l motor.
-
So you're the one that bought it. That is one nice car. I know the guy that brought it out from America & he sent me a few pics of it before he sold it. You got in a fraction before me & I even offered the owner (Dennis) a bit more than he had it advertised for. Let me know when you get sick of it. :thumb:

One word Dave.....BUGGER! :thud:
-
The car is good, but no show car. I will sort any issues, and make it a better driver. And if I get really bored I might repaint it, but that won't be any time soon. I already had the thought that if one day I want a show quality car I would just start again. And maybe with a 2+2.
The gearbox must have some kind of race ratios in it. 1st to second is so close. It almost feels like you go back into first.
I have a Getrag gearbox lying around....

I drove to Griffs on Saturday to pick up a new windscreen rubber and suspension bits. The spindles I have on the car have larger holes. So the new ball joints don't fit the spindles well. I have to work out what they are so I can order the correct tie rod ends and LCA. The windscreen rubber is much fatter, and the installer had a hard time installing it. The chrome trim isn't sitting right. But I just want to get the rwc done, so will worry about it later. I might ring them and ask them to hold onto the old rubber seeing as it's still in good condition.
-
If the holes are larger on your spindles, good chance they are Comet spindles
-
Welcome to the forum, thats one nice car
-
I remember when Dave had it for sale on here
-
Passed the rwc, happy days. I forgot I had to get the club president to sign my form. So doing that tonight, then rego tomorrow.
I went to another Mustang place, well actually 2 today. They are everywhere. I worked out I am best to buy new spindles and front brakes. I was told to just buy 65 V8 Mustang bits, they work well apparently and are made for the car. So will have to do some searching now. It's either that, or replace the new suspension bits once I work out what I need. I prefer to put the right bits for the car back on.
Also, I took some pics. The car is grubby and is full of hand prints. But at least I have pics now. Will upload them.

I decided I will change to the correct spindles. Any tips on where I can get some V8 spindles?? And if I change the spindles, I need to change the brakes. I was thinking I may as well go a nice and light caliper. These cost about $1050aus landed. Or about double of advertised price.

There's a set of spindles on ebay currently for $500.
Forum sponsor Big Al also has a spare set.
-
I saw the eBay ones. Seems expensive. Can you buy new? I would rather buy new ones for $500.
-
One of the few parts you can't buy new unfortunately.
I just got a very good set of Phill Beresford through this forum at a good price.
-
Car looks good mate
-
I pulled the 17's off and also swapped back to the old LCA's. The new ones are shot already, what a waste of money.
The car is now registered and has plates on it. :)
It's now ready to cruise, but I want to fix the front end ASAP.
-
Did they say anything about the roll bar at the roadworthy? Just interested as I'm thinking about installing one in my car.
As for the brakes. I wouldn't spend my money on the cheaper Wilwood kits if you plan on doing any track days.
-
I have two race cars. Not planning on doing any track days in this one. I know the Wilwoods are not the best. But they are very light, and will be fine for my use. The rollbar is a bit of a grey area. It is a purpose built one that is sold for these cars. It adds safety in a few ways, but also is unsafe as if you hit your head on it you could die. I put the good foam to suit non helmeted heads on it. But when I get time I will do the whole thing. I ran out of foam. Just put enough in to keep him happy, and the kids safe.
-
Took it for a cruise on the weekend to try out the new number plates. Kids loved it.
I learned that it's good to give it a bit of revs in first, then throw it into 3rd. Much more comfortable than using second.

The 17x9" wheels arrived yesterday. I went down first thing this morning and had some 225/45/17's fitted on 2. And some 245/45/17's fitted on the other two wheels. Bolted them on, and took it for a test drive. It does need some work to make no noises. Slight rubbing in the back. And the front binds when turning more than half lock. I think some 5mm spacers will fix that. The 9's fill out the guards well, and give the tyres a bit of stretch. The rear tyre clearance to the guard is tiny. Looks good. Just need to get the guard roller in there and tweak it a bit.

-
Good effort to make a 17x9 fit. What offset are you running?
-
Nice ride height with 9's. Any side on pics to show clearance?
-
Offset is zero. The diff is a bit wider, out of a Lincon I think. I need some spacers on the front to get it away from the top arm (should have bought 18's, would have been ok.)
Clearance is tiny. I will get the guard roller to fold the rear arch lip a little more, it just touches. Front guard clearance is plenty.
-
Here is the new vs old wheel pic. The lip is almost identical. All the dish is in the centre hub, the sockets for the nuts is very deep.

Don't get caught with spacers in Vic. Unroadworthy and illegal now! Confirmed to me by a Large Tyre retailer/owner. :thud:
-
The first set of 17's needed bolt on spacers. These don't. Zero offset.
-
Love this car, looks great mate!
-
Your car looks great :thumb: and the new Mags really set it off! Well done on your new purchase.
-
I like it a lot more with the new wheels. Here is a screen shot of a video the wife took of me driving by.

Love the wheels
-
What's the difference in ride quality between the 15" and 17" wheels? Do you notice and increased amount of harshness with the new wheel?
When you said earlier that the wheels had zero offset. Would that mean you're running 4.5" backspace on a 9" rim?
-
I haven't noticed much difference in ride quality. The 17's still have a fairly big sidewall. Tyres are 225/45/17 and 245/45/17. Backspace would be 4.5" given zero offset. The front rim does touch the upper arm, so ideally a +5mm rim would be ideal. I used a 5mm slip on spacer on the front. The rear diff is wider than a normal Mustang, so if you have a standard width diff, you should be right.
-
Should be a 5 inch backspace. Measured wheel width doesn't take into account the 0.5" lip on either side of the rim(so the true width is 10"). Backspacing does take it into account. Plus a 17x8 in 4.75 will just clear the rear guards when the car is lowered, so to get a 9" in there you'd have to go to 5" backspace.
Interesting you mention the rim touching the UCA, as with my 17x8 4.75, the rims are about 5 mil off the UCA, and judging by a calculator I just used you have 5mm less clearance inside.
I'm still surprised you got 9's on the back and the car that low. Do the wheels touch the guard on compression?
-
The right side rear tyre does rub ever so slightly, and the guard lips have been rolled. I am going to buy some pump up shocks so I can raise it when the car is loaded with fuel and the family. Cheapest option would be to remove the 20mm blocks, but I like the ride height. I think it would be possible to fit 10's all around with some minor work.
-
Yeah don't raise it, the ride height looks perfect.
Honestly I don't think you could do 10's on the rear with that ride height without a minitub or moving the diff in.
10's are a 265/275 tire, I haven't even anyone in the US even get that.

Bro the posts directly above yours answer your question
-
Is that the bolt in roll bar from Auto Power ?
-
Hi, I don't come on here very often. The wheels are 17x9 all round, and the tyres do touch a little But remember I have a slightly wider diff. So 9's would fit even better on a standard width diff. The black Mustang wheels have been sold. I am thinking of selling the Mustang towards the end of the year as I am going to the states. The plan is to fill up a container with a car and parts and bring it back.

I was part of a wedding group of cars yesterday. Did about 3 hours of driving, car was faultless. Just needs a wash again.
