Title: Time to start my rebuild project
Post by: LEE H 69 on June 10, 2013, 07:39:51 pm
Well finally about to start the repairs to the old girl, so good time to think about a full rebuild.
we now have another front clip to swap over, just waiting for the door and front guard to arrive.
planning on a few upgrades and mods along the way,
The car is now in the repair shop along with the new front clip so they are just about ready to start.
I've had the car stripped down since February, so been a while waiting.....   so let the games begin :evilone:

Well out with the old and in with the new, as they say,

the damaged front end is removed, still have to unstitch the chasis rails, and get pulled to re-straighten the, then cut and regraft the new front clip,

well I haven't upated this for a while, so here are a few more pics of the new front clip relacement, and panels mocked up to check alignment.
so far so good. now straighter than it was pre accident, also found other damage to the drivers side A pillar from a previous poor repair job, plus the appearence of a few rust spots that will need repairs. still a long way to go.......

Looking good.

Did your insurance company write the car off ? A repairable write-off I would assume ? And then you bought it back off them?

Seems like a long time you had to wait to get it fixed.

Cheers,
Frank.

well story so far, just about finished replacing the front clip, repairing the rusty bits and previous dodgey repairs, and filling all the unwanted badge holes.
I know they wont be to everyone liking but we've picked up the new wheels and tyres..just to add a little bling.

Finally about to resume this little project,
I should re title this thread "Time to RESTART my rebuild "

anyway after a long time waiting for the container full of parts to arrive,
( had a few hiccups) but it's now hear, so time to kick this back into gear,
haven't wasted the down time though, been planning mods etc, research, designing and prototyping, So I'm expecting a busy time ahead and plan to get this finished this year, so fingers crossed.
Here is part of the brake upgrade, made one caliper and now off to get it tested and approved,
eight stack injection all designed and ready to be made, just need to plan things around availability of the cnc mill.
Head down ass up as they say

after hooking up all the front suspension we test fitted the new wheels to check clearances etc. And just my luck one of the front wheels has the bloody wrong hole pattern. What an absolute bitch. Bought these from the states last year so we'll see if they will exchange it or not.

Well I got the caliper tested this week,
and we got good even clamp pressure between all pistons,
and pumped in excess of 1600psi pressure into it without any leaks or problems of any kind, so I'm pretty happy with that.
now to find time to make the rest of them.

Well Finally,  After nearly 3years in the bodyshop we now have the ole girl back home all repaired and painted.
it's certainly been a long wait but worth it, all the lines and gaps are absolutely perfect, probably better than when she left the factory. Now for me to get my ass in gear and finish the machining of components for it and the long road to re assembling.
So it's go go go from here on.

Looking good Lee,
Only took me around 2.5 years from that stage to have mine all back together again, every time I went to put something back on the car it just did not look right so new part ordered or stripped and rebuilt. Very rewarding though and you now know exactly what you have.
Have you changed colour or does it just look different in the photos?

Don't say that Rodney, I'm hoping to have it back on the road this year, mind you I've never rebuilt a car before so maybe I'm being optamistic, still have to finish maching quite a few parts which will take a bit of time.
Colour wise it was supposed to be winter blue with added sparkle, but ended up closer to Grabber blue with heaps of pearl,
bit of a shock when I first seen it but now getting used to it, it does look nice out in the sun I must admit.

so finally put a few hours in since getting it back, found one section where floor meets the sill where the spot welds had broke away due to the impact, which were forgotten about, so I had to address that myself before re applying new seam sealer around the inside, then layed down all the Dynamat, Sprayed the inner guards with anti chip coating before temporarily hanging the front suspension, Now to get her off the ground and seam seal and coat the underneath,

Well I've spent the last fortnight scraping off all the old underbody deadener, maybe overkill but just wanted to make sure there was no hidden surprises, pleased to say found no rust anywhere, So now thinking of spraying either POR 15 or interguard and then recoat with body deadener underneath and in wheel arches, not looking for factory look just to seal it up nicely. any recomendations or advice on products, looked at the "paint depot" and they sell an "HB" brand not sure if it's any good or not ??,  also pic shows the home made chassis connectors,

Be very careful spraying POR 15. very bad for lungs. Would need breathing equipment. Attracted to moisture in your lungs. Get it on your skin and see how long it takes to wear away.

I have read that the prep or POR15 needs to be more thorough, So I'll look at using the interguard, just need to find who sells it in Brisbane

No safety glasses, safety guard or handle, with a helper like that you should invest in a bit more protection, or premium health insurance

Well one step closer,  got the underneath rubbed down, sealed up with the interguard, seam sealed and then applied the body deadener, ended up using the Colad M40, which after a week stills feels slightly tacky, Guess I'll find out soon enough whether it cures properly,  and now to drop her back on the floor and plan the next step..

Well I guess I should revive this thread, and rebuild, after being time restricted due to work commitments, but hopefully that should slow down a little and free up some spare time, so planning to get this finished this year so here's hoping, and so to update so far.

So after painting all the stone guard guard and body deadener,  I've repainted all four wheel arches, rad support panel, firewall one roof rail and inside the trunk area ,  due to various reasons,  unpainted areas, paint came off and old weatherstrip adhesive not being removed before painting,  so that's the winge   over.

 So Now forward.
I've now got the door glass and qtr windows in, and the power windows assembly fitted, ( not wired yet)
fitted all the gutter and qtr window moulding,
fitted all the weather stripping around trunk and doors,
had a problem with the lower door seal, after fitting it Had a lot of resistance and had to shut the door very firmly, and the bottom of the door would stick out about 5mm, so pulled that off and I'll try a different brand and maybe realign the door afterwards. and to to follow up with some pics

as some of you may recall, I was playing around making my own Brake caliper etc, well that's all done along with the wheel hubs, and hats for the rear, still got to finalize the brackets yet, ended up with about 8-10mm clearance inside the front rims

Modifying it to fuel injection, plus new cam to help it breathe a little better

Will you have trouble getting the brake system passed?

In Queensland they frown on Willwood systems!

I have made these with a dust seal, I have had them tested at a brake shop and passed, I do have some one looking into Queensland Transport to see what's involved in getting them compliant,   so we'll see what happens there. :thumb:

Didn't realise it's been this long since my last update, so anyway in the limited free time I seem to get these days, I've now got the drive train in and hooked up, still working on the wiring loom for the injection and computer.  Made the fuel tank and plumbed up the fuel system all ready to go. and at the moment busy designing all the brackets and pulley's. So plodding along slowly but heading in the right direction..

Finally got to fire up the engine this week, only done a base tune at this stage to set up ecu and test the injection, seem quite eager and really responsive. Found I have a misalignment issue with the pulley system I made, I think the pwr steer bracket maybe flexing under the tension, so I'll have to take a look at that.  couldn't find how to attach a video so put a link to youtube

Title: Re: Time to start my rebuild project

Hi Jiffy, Nah ! not out driving it just yet,    had it on the Dyno to finish tune the engine,  didn't go as planned, done a couple of runs then had a seized Hydraulic lifter  ( new)...so pulled the injection off, replaced the lifter then back on Dyno,  couple more runs  then blew a head gasket,  So I decided to pull the motor out do a complete strip down check everything and rebuild it again,   The first couple of pulls show about 700 ft/lbs of torque,  so she has plenty of potential ..
