Finally added some pix. Still got NO idea what I am doing. I have plenty more pix showing the full restoration process off this car in the family garage. I also painted it in the garage. Wife now wants garage restored to it's former glory. Not before my 65 fastback resto.

I have got an apple mac. Maybe that's the problem. Still no luck. To tell you the truth it's easier painting and restoring a mustang. I will figure this out eventually.

Only paid a pittance
for her but she was complete. Every part was there. Factory 28 spline top loader with factory shifter. Also had a limited slip diff 8 3/4 of course. Took the tag off the diff and it was stamped "F". I was very surprised when I looked it up on the net. She has plenty of rust in the floors but I have a full 1 piece floor pan which I will be putting in so that will sort that problem. The rest is a walk in park. I hope.

Pulled the 1 piece floor pan out of the shed ready to go in soon. Also found a bit more rust in the toe boards. However did not want to put pieces in. I wanted the whole 1 piece so I had to hunt down a whole fire wall section. Not happy about having to replace it but it should look original and clean once installed. I bought the fire wall section from "old school" parts in spencer st thomastown. He has a heap of mustang stuff and is very helpful .(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_1935.jpg)(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_1937.jpg)

Motor finally out today as well and also started on the cowl. Found that the right hand side had rusted out so i started the removal process today by drilling out the spot welds. Title: Re: 1965 fastback restoration
Post by: rp1966 on August 20, 2012, 09:20:14 pm
The 347 is getting built by a family friend. However I am doing all the running around like getting the original block bored 30 thou. I will then give him all the bits to put together. I have all the parts except the cam. I will leave that up to him. I imported the 347 scat kit from the states when I imported the car along with some edelbrock alloy heads.(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_1986.jpg)(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_1987.jpg)

Hi. Once you have transferred the vin over from the old shell your done. You don't need to tell the RTA anything else simply produce the import approval for the original import and away you go. They wont know it's a new shell unless you tell them.

(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_2172.jpg) Found out the left hand rail was also not too my standard. Found a complete rail from of all places "brock auto parts" in lilydale. Every mustang dealer in the country wanted $300+. At that price I was gonna repair it but when I found it for $165 from these guys I thought why not do it 100%.

Looking good. A lot of work to get to the point your at!

I've been using one of these drill bits to drill out the spot welds. I think it is a knock off of a much dearer type but they work well I have found. The blades last pretty good, and they have two cutting sides. Replacement blades are cheap as well.

Had enough of the spot weld cutting and welding so I couldn't wait to see if my 4 wheel 1965 disk break kit from the US would fit as stated. The diff was pulled out and so I decided to see how this kit would fit. Too my enjoyment it was easy and fitted perfectly. The whole kit was $1099 and comes with every part including the brake booster, master cylinder, hand brake cables. callipers, slotted disks, break lines. Every possible conversion bit appears to be included. The only thing I need to do will be to run a new break line from the front to the back. Which I needed to change anyway(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_2353.jpg)(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_2354.jpg)

By the way the photo of the disk set up is only temp. The diff will be fully restored and painted before the break system is re-installed. I was just anxious about its fitment. I wish I had bought more of these at the time as I have not seen a better system on sale in Australia. Here you are lucky just to get the front disk break set up for the same price.

Hi all. I bought this complete break kit on line from MANATEE MUSTANG SUPPLY INC in Ellenton Florida  USA. The cost of the kit was $1099 and I got it delivered to a friends car in Los Angeles which was sitting on the docks. It arrived 2 months later and customs didn't charge me the gst. They only hit the importer for the cost of the 67 fastback. Goodluck for me. Anyway I enquired about delivery to Australia and they said they would ship it international to Australia for $400. In my opinion thats not bad(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/KGrHqFpcE-whEE0tBP4iwzqog60_12_zps1dd708c1.jpg)

No seriously that car looks ok if it's all there. I see people buying a daily driver for around $18000-20000 and then doing a complete restoration on it. In my opinion WASTE of money. As we all know once you start stripping you don't know what your gonna find. Who knows how many mexicans have worked on your car before it was sold and shipped down under. :flag:

car arrives on the 19th of feb, a couple of days to clear customs and then once we've checked it out mechanically we'll make decisions about what needs to be done, but at the very least those two quarter panels will need doing and the interior.

I've already started getting stuff together for it, front disc brakes and power booster, new fuel tank and fuel lines, some seats from an xr6 ute, a stereo ( my missus says the two most important parts of the car) a steering wheel, carpet on the way from tru fit and all the nolathane bits for the suspension.

just can't wait to get started!

Do yourself a favour anfo99 and get a sandblasting cabinet. Makes the job a hell of a lot easier. Today I had to take all the old pieces off the original floor to re weld onto the new floor. The one piece floor pan does not come with the hand break brackets, rear seat mounts, rear quarter mounting brackets and all the mounting hardware for the rear fold down seat. All thes old original pieces need to be cleaned up and put back in it's original position.(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_2758_zps10def152.jpg)(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_2759_zpsbb5d3782.jpg)

Hi all. Posted online last month in the wanted section for a second hand 65-66 right hand door. Could not find one any where. Had no choice but to go repo. Did a quick temp fit and to my surprise was not too bad. A bit more adjusting to the front guard and I think she will fit pretty good.(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_2830_zps49564124.jpg)(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_2828_zpsea7d42c8.jpg)(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd442/peric66/IMG_2831_zpsc3fcb939.jpg)

I notice quite a few disc brake kits don't have dust guards, my car doesn't have them either.

Is there a reason for this?

Don't know. This kit I bought does not have it and it does not really concern me. Just another piece to put on and get in the way of other things. Apparently so.

http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=4706.0 (http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=4706.0)

All car manufacturers include them for a reason right?

Apparently you can get picked on when going for a blue slip if you don't have them.

Yes Rocket that was my car. Took me 2 years to restore  and I regretfully sold it in 2010. Had a couple of convertibles at the time and basically you can't keep everything. The wife ran a wedding car hire business which we closed down due to family pressures and commitments with kids sports ect. However still managed to keep 1 from the heard. Safely tucked away in my mother in laws garage. If it stays there for a few more years could end up being a barn find for my son when he finally gets his full licence. Should post some pix of my 66 vert on this forum one day.

Hi bergmyster I just helped order a kit for my mates 68 convertible. He was looking around at some disk kits which basically included just a front kit for the same price. I put him on to this ebay site and he bought a set with delivery to Australia for $400. Sounds like alot but there were 4 box's that weighed about 80kg. I have temporarily fitted my kit and it all looks good. My mate will get his mechanic to fit his in the next few weeks. When completed I can post feedback. There is a number up top which will put you in touch with the dealer. Just give him a call. Also you can check out his ebay site on www.ebay.com (http://www.ebay.com). Not ebay Australia.

Bought some torque box's for the car as the 65 models didn't come out with them. Putting them in the car would strengthen the front end considerably. I will be doing the engine bay soon and I will be doing it the same colour as the car. Therefore I need to pick the colour for the car. My dilemma is that the car interior is red and it doesn't really match with many exterior colours. I think the following colours go well with a red interior. What do you all think? Any suggestions.

Black is a great colour but the body has to be dead straight. Every imperfection shows up on black. I have to see how the body comes up before I rule it out all together.

What is the black you are laying down? Is it a body deadener or a tough skin of some sort? Looks a little bit like U-pol Raptor liner.
Title: Re: 1965 fastback restoration
Post by: rp1966 on February 27, 2014, 08:00:54 pm
Hi Ash Its a new rubberised body deadener that really flows well off the gun and seals great. No more floor rust on this car. If only Detroit used this stuff back in the 60's none of our cars would need the floors replaced. Super tuff and very moisture resistant.

It looks tough as hell and like it will treat you well for a long long time.

How are you transitioning into the engine bay? I was thinking how to do this myself last week while working on mine. Did you stop the deadener at the overlap on the floor pan to firewall?
Title: Re: 1965 fastback restoration
Post by: rp1966 on February 27, 2014, 08:29:45 pm
Hi Ash I stopped the body deadener just after the cross member. I masked it off on the seam and it came up quite well. That is also where I will start to paint the engine bay colour from.

Keep it up. It's great to see the updates  :thumb:

Diff was stripped, sanded and wire wheeled all the way back to bare metal. It was then coated in 2k high fill undercoat and blocked back twice. It was then sprayed with 3 coats of 2k high gloss black. The shine off the gun is excellent and I sprayed it on a hot day. Who needs an oven when its 40 degrees in the garage. Also plan to spray the engine bay on the next really hot day. Heat is crucial when using PPG Deltron.

Engine bay has been sprayed RED. So it's gonna be a factory red on red car. Thats how it came out of the factory and thats what it says on the door ID tag. I decided to spray the engine bay red and not the saturn black. I just feel it looks a bit more classy that way. I know it's not original but it should still look ok. Especially with the chrome 347 sitting in the engine bay.

All went well until I got to the part for the attachment of the parking brake cables. Basically in big bold writing it said "ATTACHMENT OF THE PARKING BRAKE CABLES IS THE CUSTOMERS RESPONSIBILITY" . This has really put a spanner in the works. The cables they gave me only go half way. Now I need to manufacture new brackets and then extend the lines to reach the front :omg: I can't take the brackets and re weld them as the whole underneath has been sprayed and finished. There must be another way or another kit out there that will enable me to avoid this. Has anyone else had this problem whilst fitting a new disk kit.

What disc brakes are you running, I ran ED falcon on mine and got the old ED brake cables and cut the cable, added a piece of cable to get it to length with cable grips made sure it all works then took it down to a marine shop and had them make a new complete cable with the correct fittings on it.
Cheers Rodney

Spent the last 2 days putting the whole front on. These repo panels are a pain in the arse. They require alot of corrective work to get them to look half decent.

Front section such as headlight buckets and stone tray fitted quite well. I was pretty happy with the end result.

The item that really pissed me off was the bonnet. The first thing everybody looks at on a car. The bonnet is badly made and has a bow in the middle of it and along the sides. It does not have the correct shape to match the top of the guards. Check out the pix.

Basically I have spent hours on it and I simply can't get it to look right. I need to get another bonnet. Does anybody sell a 65-66 bonnet using the ford tooling in Victoria. l need to find one. Plenty in the states and they are twice the price of the repo Tiwanese ones. Might give Pete Smih a ring on monday. He might have one.

Have you tried Barry at early pony parts in ballarat?

No I have not tried Barry at early Pony parts but I did look at Custom Mustangs and he wants $850 for a bonnet and $700+ for a front fender. Not gonna be cheap.

Thanks MACH1. It has been a difficult restoration. There was way too much rust  but slowly I managed to replace all the rusted sheet metal and now she looks like a car again. I have found a bonnet and i will replace that this week. Then more body work and high fill.

RP give Sydney Mustang Parts a call about a bonnet. I bought my spare one two years ago and the profile is good along my original guards. Ive seen those bowed bonnets and you wonder how the hell they got it so wrong.
someone like shaunp could advise you if yours can be massaged flat with some well placed timber and a swear jar so PM him if he doesnt chime in to this post.
if all else fails i think mine was under $400 from SMP, ask rob or peter if theyre from the same supplier from a few years ago. might be worth a shot mate.
cheers griff

Thanks for the info Griff however I bought a bonnet of pete smith in Lilydale today. I did a bit of research and found that the scott drake bonnets were alot better than the other repo ones on the market. I told Pete that if it didn't fit well I was gonna bring it back. He said no problem. He also looked after me on price $280. Not bad. Anyway got home and fitted it.
