Title: 67 fasty finally here and work started
Post by: 67fasty.sm on May 14, 2011, 09:35:08 pm
Well finally picked the old project , usual stuff especially when its a cheapie lots dents , a pretty heavy smash repair and a ton of bog, but its worth saving.
I hope that it will work out , doing most of the work myself except paint.
My idea is a stroked 289 dressed up as a hi po GT strips not sure on color yet, low , 17's or 18's just really clean and neat and a 5 speed plus I love the dark red interior.

some more pics had a bit of a change scenery rebuilt the drivers side hinges and repaired the cowl on the same side not finished yet needs alittle more work . why would they have cut out the corners anyway there was no rust ?
Plus cleaned and fitted the original gauges into the repo cluster housing while watching the footy saturday night.

just a few more pics of lastest progress not thats its alot , but I am luv'n removing the bondo NOT.

qtr panel close being finished.

early door alignment now to make sure all lines up with qtr panel and rebuilt hinges

check out the thickness of the bondo !

why mig and panel beat your guard when you can just use the holes to make it stick.

but once you get all stripped the damm fender is pretty straight with only some panel work needed on the bottoms.

You took on quite a project, and it looks like you are up to the task.

Excellent work so far from the photos. You lucked out gaining the help of a professional Panel Beater too. You will be amazed at how quickly the pros can make a body look like new again.

Will be watching with interest.

Rocket.

Not alot has been happening as I have been extending the shed , but have done alittle in between.

the drivers door came up pretty good abit of stuffing around though .

decided to remove the dash as it was knocked about and spent a couple of nights fixing up came out good just a temp fit back in as we have made the call to put in a new right hand side plus an upper cowl meaning qtr panel, full rocker panel, lower cowl kick panel.

also started cleaning up the engine bay welding excess holes and smoothing out , I want it to look super clean but retain it original feel.

And just an overall shot of my progess from the front now I have some more shed to work in YeeHa!

Hi Shane, you might consider welding the towers now while youve got the car down this far , common problem on big block cars are tower cracks,

welding on my car is dodgey i know, just thought if your going to throw some decent horsepower at it and you like going round corners quick it couldnt hurt ? :thumb:

Thanks guys , the good words always give you a boost , hey cage two things hows your fasty travelling and secondly when you have finished with that chick you have there well you know look after your mates Ha !
Yeah Goldy thats not a bad call , when my panel beater comes over next time for a few ales will see what he thinks.
I must admit though the towers are in really good condition, but what we could do maybe is to make something that is welded inside the tower so its all hidden.
Cheers Shane

Hey Shane, if I had the drop on that girl mate I wouldn't be sharing her with anyone.

Still in a holding pattern with my fastback. Waiting on alot of parts now, suspensiion, brakes, sterring and some interiror pieces. Once they turn up though it will be on for young and old. Can't put a date on it but I am getting anxious. Keep putting the pics up mate they are great to look at and very imformative.

Hi guys have not done a huge amount since my last post , busy with work and a few other little projects
would have got more finished but as we know had a fight with the grinder and it won , plus still waiting on complete rh sill which has put me back about 4 weeks now are well we will get there.
Have final fitted the rear brace , rough fitment of the trunk and tail light panel ( very close to final position ) final fitting of rear drop panel , finished driver side up to front fender, and temp fit of inner guard.

had my bonnet hinges plated in a blue zinc finish came up a treat look brand new way cheaper than chrome
(http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k634/67fastysm/bonnethinges.jpg)
also decided to replace the floor on passenger side there were a few ripples in the orignal rear seat panel from the T bone stack which was hidden by bondo plus pulled the chassis back while all the floors were out.
and completed driver side
(http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k634/67fastysm/finisheddriverside.jpg)

the goal now is to have the car built to working stage by this xmas then we will break it down and paint and detail fingers X'd

thanks guys ! slowly getting there, chops it went on the trailer to my bodyman very fortunate , he is one of the best in central victoria and as luck would have it , my son's long time girlfriend is his daughter.
And we are labour swapping , he built a new workshop at his new home and being a sparkie i done all elec work for it so he's doing all the final body finishing and paint so the only cost will be materials.

Shane,

Well done it's starting to come together nice. I noticed towards the bottom you've taken off the quarter panel and the filler panel (back of the boot) and you've got a bit of rhs and a diagonal in there are they there to keep the rest or that area straight until the new parts come?

Post by: 67fasty.sm on January 14, 2013, 05:05:15 pm
Hi Anfo,
yeah before i started removing the dead panels I just tacked in some bracing so to stop everything springing out of shape looked pretty basic but did the job . Then just took my time and removed the panels drilling out the spot welds cleaned everything up an then fitted the new gear and just teck screwed into place so we could get it over to my mates place to do all the final fit and welding.
 cheers shane

the front end is done , since i took this pic i have fitted all the brake lines and fuel line plus reinstalled the diff so its all steam ahead with top now !!!

they are 68 brakes , xy/xw falcon pads and we use the retainer clip from xy/xw disc's instead of the old locating pins.
painted them with kbs extra high temp paint  can up really well , the rotors are one piece falcon as well , brought brand new they were $65 each including studs and the pads $45 for both pair .

looks like a great project,

Only problem here is you guys taking on these projects, make it look soooo easy, to the newbie, they have no idea of the level of committment, workmanship, and plain old hard work to a resto like this.

I cant wait to see the colour on it, as it starts to take shape. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

fingers crossed ! For me the key with the project is my mate who is helping , he keeps saying how do you eat an elephant ? small bits at a time ! and keep the whole project in mind but focus on one part and complete it other wise you will be overwhelmed.

what process are you going about stripping your panels at the start of the project, are you getting to bare metal and then cleaning it up with something before priming? and what are you priming with exactly? it looks as though you did this in stages? cheers

hi unrestored , i stripped back all the old paint by hand ie flapper wheels , and disc's but i used a couple of disc's which were to harsh and left scratches in the metal which i didn't realise i had done so when it came time to prep for paint we had to do alot more work to ensure the scratches were filled before final primer sealer.
Once I cleaned the surface of all of old paint went over it with prepsol ( wax and grease remover) then sprayed on a coat of etch primer .
couple of hints put your prepsol in a pump up spray bottle(small one) like what you you use to put weed killer in hardware store have them about $20 . that way you can spray on wipe off , dont use the same rag twice , ie dont wipe back over the area just cleaned with the same rag as you will just re contaminate the area .
wear fine rubber gloves but make sure no talc powder inside them , the gloves stops you putting oil from your skin on the surface .
the etch primer, does what the name implies etches into surface giving you a foundation for all that will happen later on , if you sprayed a primer surfacer on it could and most likely would lift undoing all your hard work .
Go to your local paint shop and have a yak to them they will help , i didnt paint mine my mate did and told me off ! about the scratches  :ouch:
hope this helps
cheers shane

well its now starting to look like a car  :pepper:
the painted shell pics are a few months old now we brought the car back to my house so i could start putting it back together and detail it as i go.
considering the paint only cost me materials am pretty happy , we will wait till the car is all together before we do the final cut and polish

the pics below are more up to date, all the dash parts are repo and only required minor trimming etc to fit nice the same cant be said about the roof lining had trouble with the bows as the holes were worn out so the bows kept flipping forward in the end put a small self tapper under the bow to take up the slack in the hole worked at treat . Lining was relatively easy to install then.

started installing the internal panels today very time consuming to get right all afternoon and then some to get the passenger side pretty good . I found that fitting the panel that sits above the trap door first then the curved one before fitting the large lower front one makes it way easier to get things to line up

Started blocking out the stripes and getting everything nice and smooth , started with 800 grit to remove the ridge , then re cleared and rubbed out with 2000 grit to make it nice and flat . I have only hand buffed at this stage but happy with the out come.
Also fitted the tail lights which was pretty straight forward , the same cant be said fitting the repo trim on the repo qtr extension think i measured about bloody fifty times before drilling the mounting holes hopefully have got it right.

Not too much has happened since the last update had to build a sundeck ! but have managed to complete the rear end . What a nightmare fitting the trim and the bumper . The trim was terrible cause its aluminium and its repo and i was learning as i went . when go to push the trim on over the clip the back of the trim is to long and just folds back on itself . ended up having to file down where each of the clips go in so it could snap on  :ouch:
And dont talk to me about bumpers gees ! i tell ya the rubber mallet got a good work out  :smash: had to roll the ends in to get some where looking like it fits over it all now close enough for me .

Not much progress over the summer was way too hot in the shed but managed to get a few things done .
Fitted the rear window trim and managed to stuff that up  and finished the drivers door fitting the glass, seals etc , boy thats fun by yourself got there but took a little while to adjust the vent window frame to side right against the upper door seal all works nice now.
Only thing left is to fit the inner and outer weather seals on the door itself.

Also had the heads rebuilt for the motor I supplied the hardware and Pete from Gem engines and reconditioning done the rest they were pretty shagged and in hindsight maybe should have brought new ones but these are like brand now as well.
Cost was $ 475 per head to machine , fit hardened seats , fit bronze bushings for the valve stems and assemble plus $ 300 i paid for the valves , comp cam springs retainers and locks.

For the first time in a long time I've got a little bit of cash but no time. Always one or the other and never both.

I brought some new replacement body parts last week so if I can spare a day next week, I'll be getting some more done.

It'd be nice to have my underside, inside, engine bay and driveline done by spring as well. That way when it warms up again and I can focus on getting some colour down on the outside.

sounds like were on similar time lines .
Hope you get a fair bit done next week then its good when things move forward !

Had a laugh to myself over the last few days thinking about the deck you had to build instead of working on the stang. I just had to do the same.

Two of my side kicks helped me throughout. One was very proud of her work, that's my daughter. The other, just had her nose and bum in the way the whole time.

I thought I better post up the agonizingly slow progress with the beast , too many family drama's sucking too much time and money but still have managed to still move forward .
I now have working lights all round plus all the other electrics  ,yes ! , front bumper , windscreen trim , and interior woohoo!
I havent wet rubbed the bonnet yet as it still has to come off when i can get the motor and auto built , in case i damage it .
There's alittle trick question in one of the pic's dont know if people will pick it up was done on purpose .
