People is there a Australian AOD geabox that can be used on a 302W for a 65 mustang that does not involve tunnel work. I don't want to have to get one from the states. and sorting out which would be a better option AOD unit or a gear vendors
-
No Ozzie Ford came out with the AOD , so the states is your only option . Dont know about the tunnel mods , i have used a 94 Fairlane electronic 4 speed auto with minor mods to tunnel.
-
I thought as much. I know the fox body AOD's will match up but dont know if they need tunnel mods.
-
Our supplier sells AOD install kits, I will shoot them a message, asking if they know if they fit the floor.
-
Cheers mate, looks like I will be arranging some imports. Do you sell the conversion kits (x-members, sandwich plate, tv cable etc).
-
Yes, I do. If you want to import it yourself, I can sell to you and have it delivered to your agent in the US.
-
I have an AOD in my 65 convertible.
You need to adapt the shifter, get a better filler tube and depending on the extension you may need to shorten the tail shaft.
There is a new support bracket available.
You would need a different flex plate also.
Mine gives me good economy, but they can't take excessive power, so don't expect to go to the drags and run 10s quarters.
I have a 3.0:1 diff ratio and she accelerates much better than the old 2.79:1 diff. nothing flash though.

You can now buy the conversion kits from the US for about $500US which includes all that is needed. Then I guess its up to locating the AOD to handle the power. I have 3.55 in mine and I would like it to idle a little lower on the freeways

Mate, John Greene did have an entire conversion for a 66, at his work shop for ages, may be worth a call, New box the lot, it was in a running car and removed. Not sure if he ever sold it It would a just be a bolt all the bits in job, nothing to find, one stop shop save a lot of drama. But it may be gone.
-
I will give him a call
-
May be gone but worth a call for sure.

Hey Derwin66, how much power you running? An AOD will take some serious power with a few beefed up parts. I'm running one behind my 400hp 347. I also have a spare Reco AOD, U2U me if interested.
-
At the rear wheels about 330hp, don't kinow about at the crank. Will drop you a message.
-
Im going with the C6 and the Gear vendors overdrive set up on my effie...That makes it a 6 speed.
-
Also running a highly tricked AOD built in the US in my fastback.
Designed for 550 plus hp.
Drove to a mates place in the country a short while back.
In 4th gear, she was purring at low revs nicely.
I wouldn't change it.

Please some one frame the above coment, HEVEN67 going for a AuTo , you going soft in your old age you whimp! :smile01:
As others have said the AOD will fit with minor mods , as most know i have the electronic version(4R70W) with lock up converter ,with my 3.25 diff 65mph 2000rpm with locked converter in 4th also locks in 3rd, but i really need at least a 3.55 diff, also just for your information the 4R70w will give you a even bigger bang of the line than the AOD as it has a 2.84 1st gear verses the AOD 2.40 and 1.55 second verses 1.46 in AOD, if your running a high stall the locked converter can drop another 250-300rpm off in overdrive.
cheers chris

I'm pulling my AOD out mid january has less than 1000km on it complete with 2500rpm stall convertor, lentech stg II valve body, deep alloy pan, Lokar TV cable..owes me over $3k and built to handle 550hp.... Will sell $2200, have bitten the bullet and my World series Ford Racing T5 has just arrived, and have decided to do some track days next year so the auto won't be much fun.....
You need the cross member and shorten tailshaft 25mm.....The rest is there
Will be going on Ebay mid january $2400

Way better idea, AOD are crap gearboxes, C4 will drive better any day. I met a bloke in Harvey Bay a few weeks back with a supa trick Bronco with a gear vendors in it was wickered.

A blast from the past Shaun.

This post may be a bit old now but I can add my 2 bob's worth I guess.
I imported an AOD from Monster Transmissions in the States to match the crate motor purchased at the same time. They sent all the stuff to mount it, a cooler, lokar cable, even the tranny oil! It was beefed up to take big horsepower 600+
I run it behind a 347 stroker with a bit over 400 horses.
Had to belt the tunnel with a mallet to make it fit, shorten the prop shaft, inverted the shift lever due to the B&M megashifter, cut and adjust the pacemakers . . . whew!
The end result? It is not a racing box by any stretch! The C4 I had previously shifted hard, 2nd gear chirps etc and was a much less sloppy in the shifts.
I only put in the AOD when I "street machined" my ride as I put in a 3.55 9" diff and didn't want the thing screaming on the highway.
If I wanted to race I would have put in a manual, but I have to say the AOD is a bit ordinary in any spirited driving mode. To manually shift, the push forward to second and pull back to lock into second is just weird and takes a lot of getting used to. Plus the setting of the TV cable is very fussy and if it is not right, you will burn out the box with just a little bit of tame driving. When you add the lack of knowledge of the AOD amongst most of the local Transmission Mechanical fraternity, it spells trouble.
Mine is running adequately and seems to be lasting (been going 5 or 6 months now) on the highway it drops revs nicely . . . but if it ever blows, it's coming out and another solution will be sourced.
-
You could always go a full manual BTR which would handle the power.
Maybe even make flappy paddles

Th gear vendos was made to suit a GM gearbox and they built adapters so you could put it behind a ford box
-
GM don't make the AOD, Ford do.
GM have the T700 (Hydraulic) and later Electronic shift boxes, based on the T350, so not overly strong anyway.
I run 3.50 gears in my car, with a tall 27" tyre, and find it launches hard enough, but it is pretty loud, doing 3000rpm at 100kph...
-
I'm not sure what thats out of, I think it is Rodeo maybe.... Def not commodore 4 speed Auto.
I'm also not sure why you'd bother. Get a BTR 4 speed out of a EB onwards 5.0 V8 Falcon. Not very strong, but enough for most people.
