New 347 Build
« on: May 25, 2021, 09:15:50 pm »
Hi All, First time poster here.

Now from the outset I want to say that I am not a mustang owner, one day maybe, so dont hate on me. But instead I am rebuilding a ZD fairlane. From all my searching through forums I have found this one full of knowledge and incite, particularly from ones like barnett468 and shaunp, hence the reason for this post.

So, I am building a 347 from a 93 oem roller block. About to send it off to be bored, tq plate honed, decked and line bored.
As for parts i currently have
Scat 9000 crank and I beam rods
ARP main studs, clevite P bearings
Mahle power pack piston & ring assembly
Promaxx max series ally heads, (advertised flow of 267 on intake and 196 ex @ .550 lift) these have an advertised combustion chamber of 60cc but so far i have measured them at 61 or 56 depending on which device I use. Have a proper burette coming so will know more then.
For intake I am using an edelbrock Pro Flow 4 Sequential injection unit, which is essentially a super victor manifold with throttle body on top and port injectors.

Usually I would select a cam and build up from there, but on this occasion it started with a good deal on some heads, which turned into thoughts of a rebuild, which stretched out to stroking etc..
Now I have parts and are looking for other parts to complement.

So here is my first series of questions which i would like some input on if its not to much trouble.
I have my eye on 2 cams, both Howards.
222755-08  278  284 / 225  231 / .533  .544  on 108LSA
220255-10  284  288 / 231  235 / .544  .565  on 110LSA

Car is approx 1500kg (3300lb) will run a BTR 4 speed auto ( 1st - 2.39:1,2nd - 1.45:1,3rd - 1.00:1,4th - 0.68:1) and a 3.45 lsd out of a AU XR8 ute.
It will be a weekend cruiser so after strong midrange, prefer to sacrifice a little at the top to preserve low end. Happy to rev to 6200 - 6500 when needed.

So far, depending on what the heads cc at my compression ratio looks to be at 10.47 - 10.82,  quench will be 0.039"
Do you think comp would be to high for 95 or will it need to be on 98 all the time?
What cam in your experience would be suited?

I do have other questions, but thought I would start on these 2.
Thanks in advance
JR

Hey There, do not know how to post links, so look up You Tube "My Vintage Iron7512" scroll through videos and find "How to properly select a camshaft" if nothing else it is an informative watch...,

This comprehensive paper on building Ford Windsors by the late Boofhead on the other forum is well worth a read.

Thanks for the response. Vintage Iron is a great channel with lots of interesting stuff, and that article by Boofhead I found to be very helpful. I suppose what i was looking for was feedback from others who have different combinations and how they find them in there day to day use. For instance, with said combo and xyz cam i found it to be a little large on the duration, or not enough vacuum etc.

Any personal experiences certainly help.

Trying to compare cams is a very hard thing to do as no two engines are the same and no two cars and running gear are the same, I have recently finished building a 347 from a '67 289 block, with a lot of guidance from many of the helpful forum members decided to run with AFR 185 heads, was offered advise on 2 cams, a lunati 272 & 282 , decided on the 272 as the 282 gives a higher rev range, considering my block is 50+ years old I have no intention of revving it over 6200, Decided on the recommended 1.6 ratio rockers as going with larger ratio gives me negligible flow gain, So, starting with the heads and working back from that and using the flow numbers and my estimated rev range I am very comfortable with the cam I chose, ( Lunati  20350711 ) 272/280 @ .050 221/229  .549/.565 112LSA
What am I saying? people can offer advice but in the end it is your build to your needs, and if you know your specific needs and know how to do the math you can't go too far wrong'
Good luck..,

Thanks Reborn 67,
What Compression ratio did you end up with using the AFr's?
Are there any changes you would of made to your combo if doing it again?
I understand each engine and intended use is different, and I am fairly settled and happy with choices made thus far, good to know of any pitfalls others have faced.

After crunching the numbers I estimate compression to be high 10's. Quite satisfied with all l have done with this build so far, as l originally had a target of 350hp, and now have exceeded that somewhat, tried to utilise the max flow rate of these heads without getting carried away, Running a Holley 750dp on an edelbrock Airgap rpm,
It has taken over 2 years to build it, but l can say that this forum has been a wealth of info and l have done a sh!tload of research,
