Hey guys,
Due to the last posting being deleted here's an update link on the SOON to be an Eleanor saga:
http://s608.photobucket.com/albums/tt169/St_Marys_Prestige/Bas%2067/
-
Still not sure about color.... since I've already purchased red/white complete deluxe interior, I'm thinking BLACK with red strips on the outside??...your thoughts are appreciated.
-
Mate, I contemplated the Eleanor complete shebang. Did a mountain of research on it and know of a few good sites to check out as well. To be honest I would go as close to spec as possible i.e. Dupont Pepper Grey with the black stripes, another Dupont colour. That's just for starters.
Good luck with it.....
I even got the Vic plates...LYN-274 which was the rego of the Shelby Eleanor in Gone In 60 Seconds.
Oh and if anyone is interested now that my Eleanor plans have changed course I am looking at selling these plates.
Cheers.
-
yeah aint cheap,
a grand each for tail and head lights,
brushed interior. wheels,
kit.
thats just to make it look good,
let alone handle and go as well:-)
-
Ye,
Already have the eleanor complete kit. Purchased about 3years ago and sat in the garage waiting for the day it has a car to do on.
I've got about 5grand worth of sheet metal being replaced and that's just for the parts....;+; good time for a drink i think ....lol.
-
Deluxe interior purchased, landed should be available in about two weeks.
Problem is I ordered it all red with white inserts in the seats.....spent almost 3grand.
so don't think the original pepper grey eleanor colors on the outside will suit....so i'm thinking all black with red strips and maybe a faint white outer edge on the red strips....thoughts?
-
Guys thought I'd keep you as up to date as possible so here's a list of the sheet metal being replaced on the car........not sure if there's going to be anything left unchanged?!.....oh ye, the dash is good::

-
;{oh ye, a quick thank you to Capital Classics for having 90% of the list in stock and sourced the rest. :(:(
For an impatient person like myself, I didn't want to wait two to three months to get the stuff.
-
WOW thats a lot of things.
thats a new car really eh
-
yep. pretty much......again, not so concerned about myself at this stage, but I wish theres' someway to warn others of "dressed up dolls" being sold overseas.
After all the sheet metal is replaced then the Eleanor kit will go on, then the deluxe interior...after that, it'll just be dress up stuff, like a brand new wiring loom etc...
-
what plans for the donk?
-
;] unfortunately that'll have to remain a 289 with 3sp manaul for now.
I'm barely affording what needs to be done, so donk will have to be a future investment.
-
plenty of time to plan and think whilst you save the cash mate :( the wait makes the end result so much sweeter! :2
-
go a big 429 4 speed:-) I did
-
rick...how much did it set you back?.....need to start saving :+
-
well about 1400 us,
getting it done while its in the us.
u could always try ebay,
lots of engine builders there

So what's it costing to fix, $20k ?
-
Sheet metal from CC has been ordered and paid for!!:(
Should have it in by next week.
So far resto moving along nicely. :-
-
Stanglover, have you thought about keeping the Red/White stripe scheme she had when you bought her? It would be an eye catching Eleanor combo.
Cheers, Ron B
-
ye. Have considered it hence my avatar.
Not sure it looks mean with the eleanor kit on and those colors.
Its a fair way away yet to start thinking about colors, I have plenty of time.
Interior is definately all red with white strip in seat inserts and deluxe trim with brushed aluminium. Unless I decide to sell the interior and go for deluxe black trim.
-
I just got most of my interior order,
black with brushed aluminium.
hope it will look ok
-
;x You wanna swap??
Mine's all red deluxe with brushed aluminum!
Seats: red with white inserts front and back fold down.
-
naaa black goes with everything,
I went through laruel mountain mustang i think and stang a holics.
cuz my car is in the states
-
Rick,
How was the service with Laurel Mountain ? Shipping prices ? Do they ship USPS ?
Everytime I ask them for a shipping price on their eBay items they never respond. Probably have to call them I suppose.
Cheers,
Frank.
-
they seemed good to me,
I reckon shipping to AUS would kill it was 65 us just to miami
-
Frank I have bought a lot of stuff of Laurel Mountain, their prices are good, their service is bad. I bought about 3-4 g of stuff off them and it went through well. I have also bought a few small things of them on e-bay and they were not cheap for postage. I now wait for a friend or two to go to the state and get it sent to their hotel and then postage within the US is cheap

Don't get me wrong I was just curiuos, as to the the cost of panel work. I've seen a 68 coupe in simlar condition run to mid $30k, that's all. You don't make money normaly on classics(unless you paid $3k for a HO in 76) so what you spend matters little as long as you are happy.
-
What, even for an Eleanor? this is interesting, say even in total building a mild Eleanor costs about $60k. I haven't seen an Eleanor sell for less than $100k. I ofcourse could be wrong....
So how much would a non matching numbers Eleanor be worth these days?
Lets' say its had everything mine is having, ie. new floor, new roof, new qtrs, new door skins, etc etc...new deluxe interior and a new paintjob (lets just say original pepper grey with black strip Eleanor colors), complete eleanor kit....no major upgrade of brakes, suspension or motor and gearbox. what would that be worth to the Eleanor fanatics out there?
-
Bas, being an "Eleanor" doesn't make it rare & collectable IMO. An Eleanor is a fictional character just like Humphrey B. Bear. I'd personally expect an original unmolested fastback to fetch bigger dollars. I suppose that people who have built "Eleanors" would place a higher price tag on their cars to recoup what they've spent in creating them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against modifying cars (mine's certainly not original). I have no doubt that yours will be absolutely fantastic when it's finished! I guess as long as there are buyers out there that like the customised look, you'll hopefully be able to get your money back. It's great that you're building a car that YOU will enjoy. As Shaun said, you normally don't make money on these cars anyway.
Good luck with your dream car.
Evan.
-
A good body is a good body, dosen't matter if it cost you $38k to fix a rough one or $10k to paint a good one, really though a body with the good original panels is worth more then a rebuilt car in my view. By the time you replace chrome, rubbers glass etc , the car will cost you plenty, I don't know what you paid for it to start with, but by the time you pay someone $1Ok for a quick engine, plus what ever suspension and gearbox ( tremec etc will cost you $5k to fit) wheels etc etc you decide to run, the car will cost you $60-80K I reckon easy if not more. If you spend good money on the body and paint you can't nickle and dime on the rest. The big dollar Elenors cost, because they are big dollars to build simple as, and they won't have a 289 + 3 speed. They'll have 400hp + 5 speed
You don't make money on this stuff unless you are doing all the work yourself, even then if count your labour you'll be behind. You don't do this to make money, you do it because you love the car and intend to keep it and enjoy it. That's why you build them how you want them and how you think you will enjoy them. You make money out of charging people to build them.
Don't get me wrong you are doing the right thing here, you are fixing the car properly, so that it will last for years, there is no point in doing things by 1/2, totally support you (body kit a side), Just don't kid youself you'll get your money back, in hurry if you need to sell it, that's all. I've been building old cars since the mid 80's, some pretty flash cars to like E type jags etc, I don't pay for labour on paint & panel, mechanical. Ive made cash but really it probably just pays for the labour in real terms. Build youself, the car you want and can justify cost wise and be happy, cause when you driving a kicker car you'll forget what it owes you trust me. But unless your lucky you won' get your loot back. Just think of turning the tyres in 3rd gear and you'll be fine.
-
Good advice Shaun and Evan:(
-
Very good advice.
My car cost good money and was in pretty good shape - body was excellent even though I've had a couple of repairs(sagging doors, rust and panel fit).Unfortunately I'm not very skilled at this type of work but I'm good at what I do for a living so can afford to pay good people.Point is I've spent heaps and plan to spend more but I don't think that I'll make money out of it.
Since I've started I've had a ball driving around with a great bunch of people in the club,my wife enjoys the social aspect,my kids(21,24 and 25) think the car is great and I love the car.I reckon I've got back every cent I've spent in enjoyment and learnt a bit at the same time.
Bob

:i.... never bought the car thinking i'll fix it and sell it for profit.......definately bought for the love of the stang!!
Having said that, to all coupe owners please do not be offended. But in general don't fastbacks fetch a whole lot more than coupes? i'm thinking obviously not from experience that purchasing coupe for 30grand and fixing it is never going to get you ur money back, but a different story for a sought after fastback?! .... just my thoughts.....
-
The rarer the car, the higher the price. They made alot more Coupes than anything else. Because there are so many to choose from at any given time, the prices will naturally be lower.
Evan.
-
When you see a company that sells kits such as this that converts a 69-70 coupe to a fastback, then it says something about the value of fastbacks.
http://www.classicautomotiverestoration.com/mustang%20kit.html
The list of replacement panels is long, so I dont think it would be a cheap conversion.
Saw it in Mustang Monthly and also Muscle Car Review mags.
Cheers,
Frank.
-
Ev, don't ever say that about Humphrey B Bear again!
Cheers Bee

You may get square if your luckly. The thing is going to owe you $60K by the time it's painted and back together. I reckon that would be what it's worth. They are only worth what someone will pay on the day, not the $100k they get advertised for.
-
So true shaunp! You get square with the value of the enjoyment over & over & yes it's worth what the buyer is willing to pay, but who would want to sell? (unless of course one is forced by the current economic situation)!

:w my sincere apologies Bee. I don't know what I was thinking. ;x

When there is no money around they are all just old cars, no matter if they are a Mustang or Jag GTHO. I bet there a few blokes who paid $500k + for XYs licking the wounds about now, when their supa has gone through the floor. I feel great with my $9k 67 A code.
-
No updates....just waiting for sheet metal to be delivered to Steve. I think that's when the real work begins :(
-
Hopefully the bits will arrive tommorow or Wedensday. Then we can begin the fun:(
-
Begin the fun!, looks like you've got some measuring and pulling to do on the front end before you get to carried away:(
-
Once the parts arrive it will be squared up on the car-o-liner to get everything where it needs to be. Then we will un pick the rails & skirts to do the floor & firewall. Rails & skirts back on with sections replaced as needed. Then move on to the qtrs & beaver etc. Then we can look at the Eleanor kit. Should keep a few of the boys occupied for quite a while.

Hey Bas, Yes fastbacks do demand higher prices for the above mentioned reasons... the fact is, they are more desirable to more people.. there's a reason Dynacorn dont do coupe bodies.. and hollywood has certainly helped jack up the prices.
Agree, but dont forget Dynacorn now do a 69 Fastback and I think also 70 fastback body which has nothing really to do with Hollywood.
Cheers,
Frank.

Hey guys....
Just the latest pic.....
Looks like we are moving forward quickly! All new metal has arrived at Panel shop, thanks to Capital Classics :(
-
Just a quick massive thanks to Steve from Prestige St.Marys for making me feel comfortable in his professionalism and workmanship!! So far everything has gone by smoothly and quickly which is a bonus for an unpatient plick like myself!:p
Steve relises the distance and time difficulty so he has been keeping me posted with progress photos and phone calls!
-
Hey Baz,
You still have drum brakes on the old girl, just fitting new SSBC kit to mine, I am most impressed with what comes in the kit. She will look good when finished. I thought fast backs were mostly fitted with discs.
Cheers
Ashley.
-
Hey Ashley....
I've purchased discs all round from a advert from this forum.....bargain at $300!! had to drive to Newcastle to getem.
It'll be just one of the many upgrades to be carried out once we have the bod looking good and straight.
-
Baz.
Sweet!!
Ash
-
Baz, what is the latest on the exterior colour? still going with red??
-
Well, spoke to the Man from Capital Classics...he informed me that if I decided to be just like every other dikhead and go with the pepper grey etc then I'd only be down about $450 as its only the seats and door trims that were custom colored to match the rest.
Everything else can be just swapped for black if I wanted as they are standard...i.e carpet, roof lining, dash pad etc ...
Therefore, I'd be down $450 but also have extra seat coverings (Red outer/white inserts), and deluxe red door panels which I can try and sell both on ebay etc..
Long story short, I now have a choice!! I'm not stuck with the red and white interior and can decide to go with pepper grey outer if I so wish....
The question is now which way to go? we do have a while before gotta decide, as you can see above, plenty of work and time ahead.:o
-
I actually think the red white combo eleanor will look Sweet!
-
ye, looking different for sure! Looking sweet too.....
but I have a nagging issue, and that is resale value, I know I say I ain't doing it to sell, but one day may come when I need or have to sell, and I think the original Eleanor colors will always sell quicker or higher than any other different color.....true?
I like both colors, and don't really have a preferance.....I think the red/whit will be in your face stand-out....but I'm sure an Eleanor whateva color is going to be a stand out on Sydney streets........I've only ever seen one cruizin around the Cross.....let me tell you, I was palpatating!!
-
was it really necessary to call owners of grey/black Eleanors dikheads ? regardless of whether it is yours or your guy @ capitol classics opinion.
totally uncalled for.
Cheers,
Frank.
-
I guess the thing is Eleanor is always seen as grey,
otherwise it cant be an Eleanor,
and realistically how many are there in Aus,
they aint like a commodore,
so calling people dickheads is a bit much
-
Take it easy guys....it was just another word for being like "every tom DICK and harry".
Just cause its ;1, don't have to be so sensitive....
If I offended anyone, I'll retract my incorrect wording.:-

I'll second that - Common fact is that a lot of mustangs are red (my two are), but not with that kit and the two tone red/white interior would suit it really well.
But Baz, It is your car, and you know what you really wanted when you bought the kit all those years ago, so why not build it how you originally envisaged it... not what we on this forum suggest you do. :[
-
Hey Mo,
i know at the end of the day (or should I say year..lol) it will be my decision.
But I value the opinions of this forum members, as so far none has let me down but one.
Some of you guys have been around these cars for years so you speak from experience......even if you're a little sensitive at times....:+
;}I hereby promise to never call pepper grey/black strip Eleanor owners dickheads or otherwise.

Link to the latest pics. We have started a new album for this next stage.
http://s608.photobucket.com/albums/tt169/St_Marys_Prestige/Bas%20Sheetmetal/
Will try & get some more pics later today.
-
Wow! Its getting scarier by the day....;x
Who would of thought the nice red shiny car that arrived back in January would look like this today?!:-
I know.....Its all for the better.....
Again can't thank Steve from Prestige St.Marys enough for the work he's doing and the continual updates.:(
-
Yeah but the beauty of Mustang is you can buy all the parts new, not like an XY falcon or a HK Monaro. So in real terms they are easier and cheaper to fix and they come to gether pretty quickly as a result.
-
Just added a few more pics to the new album. Pretty happy with the fit of the parts so far. The firewall could be passed of as genuine it was that good.
The floor needed a bit of massaging but no more than I expected. I have been a bit lazy & not typed comments on the pics as most are fairly self explanatory. Shaun P will probably pick this up but have a look at the pic of the N/S rear skirt section. Gives a good indication of how far out the rail is on that side. Measuring fron the top of the tower it is nearly 30mm up & back.
-
Yeah but it will be easy to move rails around with skirts off. It's been around a bit that's for sure. You have it that far apart you should have made it RHD. It will come together pretty quick like I said.
-
I asked Bas if he wanted us to convert it while we were going. He wants to keep it left hook & get the whole US feel.
That skirt section is now fitting like a new one, hopefully the front will be done by the end of the week. We need to get the body squared away so we can get it off the bench. There is a bit of a cue forming with the car-o-liner tied up with a big hit on a Rodeo.
-
All I can say is "You're a Legend" :f
Definately want to keep it a lefty!
If I wanted a right hand drive muscle car, I would of bought an Aussie Muscle car.

But why would you buy a fast Fairmont with stripes when you can have a Mustang for fraction of the price anyway, even if you convert it:(

Big boobs or not, there still our mustangs!

I guess the left vs right hook debate is one that will never be decided. I personaly prefer RHD & once Bas's beast is a bit further along we will start on my 68. I think when the time comes I will be trying to pick shaunp's brain for as much info as possible::
A few more pics have been added to Bas's album for those that are interested.
-
Fantastic Thread , its Motoring along (pardon the pun)
Love the lifting gear in that workshop.
Apart from the extra costs , you got to be happy your gonna have a near new car in the end . Great work!

Not hard to do for a bloke like yourself. Particulary if you do the bolt in rack job, unlike the more standard approach I took with an XF box and drag link. No need to buy all those Dyna corn RHD panels. I don't think the labour would be much different really, just $5000 extra in panels. Unless they needed replacing already as they did in this case.
-
shaunp the drag link - what do you get it off? an XY? and cut t? then i suppose its xray'd for engineers report?

That's right, and you can fix up the factory bump steer if you do it right. Guys just up the road from me do the xrays and stamp the link to match the report done. They will fail if the welder can't weld and the x ray is the expensive bit. To do them properly it's 2 cutts 2 xrays.
-
So who does the cut and weld dude? anyone you recommend? Im also looking ofr someone ot possibly suppy the drag link!
-
John Green at Probe Eng does the cutting, and has a jig for each model, but he has an expert Race car welding/building dude do the welding so they don't fail the xray, he does them with a mig but uses different wire and different gas. John does other steering type mods for people building buses, motor homes etc. He normally getts them ready and then this bloke comes down from the North coast for a day, welds them and goes home. John's designs only work if you mount the idler and the box where He does. He does the links for one of the mobs on the Goldcoast that conver stuff as well. Peter Menzies will have stock Falcon links, you can cut up an XA as well. Your 66 will be different to my 67 link as the link is at a different height. John can do modded Falcon stub axles as well to fit Falcon Discs I think to pre 67 cars so the bump steer is ok.
-

Mate here in the west , Mustang West do the conversion including notching the chassis rail for the steering box (to help prevent bumpsteer) and send the draglink away to get them modified with a engineers certificate .

Why would they notch the rail? In fact doubt that would pass in Eng inspection in QLD. The bump steer is a function of the effective height/angle of the tie rods, if you get that right that's it. You can raise or lower the drag link by the way you bend/postion/ reweld the ends back on. You need to dent the RHD side rail a bit so the XF box sitts flat , due to the shape of the back side of the box but that's it. I can't see what effect the rail has on bump steer, unless it's to do with the way they make their drag link some how, in which case the link is not correct. I had a look at their web site and noticed they don't move the heater controls on the early cars either, this is because if you move them they hit the radio, you need to mod them to clear. Can't see what they do to the rail in the pictures. But there is no need to touch the rails apart from the mounts, and a hit with a hammer.
-
;} don't want to sound rude, but you guys might need a new posting for conversion to RHD as this baby is staying as American as pie!!......
Unless you're talkin about my resto......;3

Stanglover -out of curiosity - when your panel guys cut your beast up.....are the bracing it in some way/ Or is the roof enough to stop the car from twisting as such?

The car was clamped on the bench before anything was cut off. Everything from the firewall forward was that bad anyway bracing would have been counter productive.
I will get a pic today of where the old plenum had been redrilled for the export brace, will give a good indication of how nasty it was.
With the sills clamped, turret & qtrs in place & the inner plenum, dash frame & l/h torque box still in extra bracing would just be in the way. The new firewall & plenum fit like a glove. The front is coming along nicely as well, in the process of test fitting the guards & bonnet. Cant wait to see the look on Bas's face when he comes for a look tommorow arvo.
-
LOL....nice one
...sounds expensive!
-
:p Like I said .......The guys' a legend!
I'm sure my jaw will drop.
I finally feel good about this project. Even though I was over the moon when the car arrived, deep down I saw lots of problems lurking underneath, but I didn't want to admit it or made myself think that they weren't that bad.:-
Anyway, this is where we're at now and I really feel i've ;4, when I found Steve!
-

Bas,even though the start of this project was a bit rocky,I think that you've struck gold with your restoration - looks great.

Anyway, this is where we're at now and I really feel i've ;4, when I found Steve!

Red overspray, that could be it. Gotta stop pointing the gun in the wrong direction.
Pics updated, rear end getting some attention.

Did you put the holes in the tower or are you filling them up? You're better of just putting XF top arms on them and getting rid of the greaseble bushes. Some clown used an air chisel to put grease hole in my 67.
-
;x.....;x;x;x
-
Power to weight ratio is looking pretty impressive at the moment, can't believe how much was hidden by the red paint and shelby kit.
Is there a planned finished time for the bodywork and paint job??
-
whats the bodywork gonna cost about 15 grand?
-
Hey Guys,
I'm happy to share with you everything that is happening with this project......photos, updates, issues, ups and downs...etc..... except for the price. That will have to remain between myself and Steve.
Lets just say he has been more than just generous :(:(
Even though there was going to be EXPECTED surprises...just didn't know how big or small they'd be, Steve has stuck to his word and hasn't altered the quotation.
I was more than impressed on Saturday when I saw the car....the front end looked brand new. But seeing these photos of the roof and rear end......;x....what's left of it??

Bit more than that I'd say, don't forget the cost of the panels not just the labour, make no mistake there is alot of labour in this car, and a lot still to come, having said that the body prep proir to paint will be less cause it's mostly new panels now, but still a good few man hours. I reckon I've got an idea of cost all up painted.
-
..can i just add...I'd encourage your thoughts or speculation on total costing.
Lets not forget:
New wiring harness needs to be purchased and installed
New interior has been purchased but still needs to be installed
New front windscreen needs to be purchased and installed - old rear screen is still in good condition.
New Rubber kit for whole car has been purchased but still needs to be installed
Steve suggests its a good time now to either reco or upgrade the suspension.
Disc brakes all round has been purchased still needs to be installed
Need to purchase and install new Instrument Panel.
-
Most cost effective front end up grade is Falcon, Just use XF stuff works fine, it's cheap and you can buy pads at Super cheap on a Sunday arvo if you have to. You can run an entire xf front end or just the top arms stubs and brakes. XF calipers are alloy and can be polished to look like chrome so they look sweet through the wheel. XF top arms don't have greaseable bushes like the mustang ones so one less thing to grease and to squeak. I'm going to have a go at the EA rear disc conversion looks like a cost effective option and a again generic Falcon parts. Use the greasble aftermarket spring pivots, from Fulcrum or Nolethane, Cut an 1/8 of an inch off the caster bar bush spacer tubes, run a 1inch front sway bar. For front springs on a small block car you can use KINGS springs, lowered to suit XF 6 cylinder (falcon is heavier than a pony so you use the 6cyl spring). Front screen is nothing and I'm sure Steve will pull them in once the car is painted. Even if you have not got XF brakes I'd still run XF top arms as they are braced and use metalistic type bushes. Run a 3/4 rear bar, try to get one that mounts on the body not the axle. Get all your bits blasted and powder coated or have Steve give them a hit with some black 2k, Ball joints etc are just Falcon no biggy. Does it have Power steer?
-
:[ no power steer...... although I've been hitting the gym weights and going hardcore, so should be able to steer the non power steer with my little finger :+
All the above made absolutely no sense to me, but I'm sure it did for Steve!:(
Although I'm sure the disk brakes i purchased were from a XF setup. It was a forum members from here that was selling them.
-
Apart from the brakes...which i already have.
How much does the above amount to in $$?.....and will the above be an upgrade on what I already have or just a replacement?
-
Bit of both, upgrade and replacement. The XF stuff is 20 years newer and while not that different it is better, the aftermerket bigger front sway bar, springs etc will tighen it no end, Kings springs are about $100 a pair, set of KYB gas adjust shocks will be about $130 a pair. replacement ball joints etc are just falcon full set uppers and lower around $100 set for good quality ones, spring pivots similar. $100 worth of other crap like bushes, camber pins etc, sway bars around $160 each. It's important not to get too carried away with really stiff front end set up on these cars or the flex like hell and a well put together one has pretty tight gaurd to bonnet gaps. I've seen them rub paint off the bonnet edges when driven hard with stiff front ends. I've got the LHD power steer from my car if you want it. Don't know what it's like probably needs freshen, but my car was not very knocked around just well driven and faded, never been painted since new apart from some touch ups. Never damaged in the front so the steer would be ok I reckon. You can get really carried away buying trick aftermarket suspensions for these things, but I don't see the need, I don't really think they need to drive like a BF falcon, as long as they corner ok and stop ok, they are fine to drive, and again you can buy generic ford bits anywhere in Australia, you will never be stuck. That's my view away, They should drive a bit like an old car albeit a good old car, after all that's kind of what it's about.
Make sure Steve puts 2 torque boxes on it to firm it up while he's there. It's looking good what colour are you painting it underneath? body colour, black, red oxide?
-
Including the interior, the paint, the new panels , the pieces you list and the total labour, I am guessing you will be up for about $30k.
Then add an eleanor spec drivetrain - $20k.
Add the above to the initial purchase cost (IIRC) gets you an eleanor for $80k which I guess is about the going rate.
Cheers,
Frank.
-
Shaunp can you use the whole XF setup, upper & lower arms, stub axle, rotor & caliper, radius rod etc? If so that would be the go I think. Then Bas can re sell the front brake set up we already have as it is a hybrid type setup. Plus it still needs calipers & a few odds & ends.
-
WOW !
thats a restoration, at least you know its done right and no rust
in the old girl when finished, SORRY I MEANT NEW GIRL,
you are going to have a really nice car when its finished ,,,
cheers
tom...................
-
Most of the time you just use the stubs, brakes and top arms. The mustang lower arms have different size inner bushes and camber pins (Same as XY). If you use the XF lower arms you need to also use the caster bars and change the camber bolts. I guess Bazz's car is rough as in the front end so swapping it all may be the go in case anything is bent. XF brakes are well good enough, plus the calipers alloy. You need to change the outer tie rods as the falcon stubs have a larger taper in the steering arms. If Baz has small centre holes in his wheels you'll need XY/XA hubs/rotors. You can buy combo, one piece hubs&rotors new if you have XF hubs. The XF calipers polish up nice if you want or just blast them so they are clean. Cut the caster bar bush spacing tubes shorter so the clamp the rubbers tighter. This also stops a lot of lower arm movment while the suspension is working. Rebuild stuff for XF brakes are cheap as, stock RDA rotors are like $34, more if you want slotted etc. Get the stubs of a sedan not a wagon or a Fairlane as the steering arm is different for the long wheel base, so the ackerman different, they reckon. Poeple get carried away with brake packages etc but really they don't need it just looks flasher at a car show, in real terms a waste of loot. Baz is spending it where it counts fixing the shell.

Steve apart form some shopping dents, my 67 is straight as, no big hits ever, it's got pretty even and tight gaps much beter than an Oz ford of the same era, not sure if they are all like this, The bonnet gaps are quite tight and virtually match the the gaurd to plenum chamber. But no one has had a go at my car they just drove it till it stopped. You guys aren't mucking around with this car, hard to find a shop to work so full on on a resto, particulary one like this.
-
Its not that much different to a big smash job. More accuratly 3 big smash jobs on one car. I think the important thing on a project like this is to approach it in the right way so it doesnt get too daunting. It also helps that Bas is happy to let us get on with it & not want to take shortcuts. BTW thanks for the tip on the XF stuff, We should have it all today so we can clean it up & rebush it etc. The holes in the towers are now gone so it will look a lot cleaner. Hopefully when this puppy hits the streets we pick up a few more of these types of jobs.

Except there really wasn't that much pulling to do, just a lot of panel replacement. I'm sure you'll get some extra work out of it.
Don't forget the tie rod hole in the steering arms will be a different size, falcons are bigger. But I think Bas wants a power set up I have spare, pretty sure the inners are like new so it will just need the correct outers fitted, and a seal kit in the ram to be sure. Does his car have a long shaft steering box now or a rag joint on the colomn shaft? The matching HI ratio steering box I have is a long shaft and he will need his outer colomn because I using this in my car. My car was built 11/66 even though it's 67, some late 67 cars have a 2 piece set up joined by a rag joint like a falcon. You really want the hi ratio box with the power steer so it's not to light and has less turns lock to lock.
-
To be honest when I was first shopping around for someone to do the work, i thought i better find a shop that just does restorations as I'm an impatient basKard....I had the thought that a panel shop that does insurance work will first of all never be interested on taking on this sort of work, and also they would take over a year to complete. There was no way, i was going to wait a year to be driving this thing, i would of preferred to get rid of it than wait that long.
So now you know why I can't thank Steve enough and thank my lucky stars I found him to do the work :(
Not only did he change my perception about panel shops, but what a gentleman he turned out to be, unlike the mob i purchased from ::.....but I'm learning to move on from that and that you can't trust everyones word.
-
More pics, in the last one you can see my sad looking 68. Doing Bas's has inspired me to get cracking on it now.
Shaun this one is early without the rag joint so the swapover should be pretty straight forward. I am waiting on a call back for a price to get it recoed before it goes in. Should be a pretty tidy brake, suspension & steering package at buggger all expense by the time it is done.
-
White line do a 24mm front sway bar, and maybe use some KYB gas adjust shocks, I think the part number for the King springs maybe KFFL01, but not sure, but they are just lowered 6cyl falcon ones. There is a Cortina one you can use also.
seal kits for the ram and valve body are pretty cheap $30-40 each.
-
Corection to the Kings springs KFFL 0 or KFFL 01, the 0 will be a little lower, the 01 will be a little higher/stiffer KFFL 0 are 6cyl Cortina or alloy head falcon. 01 is iron head or V8 falcon. If you running extra weight like A/C etc maybe the 01 would be better.
-
We will put the original springs & shocks back in for the time being or use the standard xf springs. The rear leaf springs are going to need a reset at some point so I think it will be better to get the car complete & then do the springs according to the ride height Bas is after. I think it would be best for him to see it sitting with everything back on with the right wheels etc & then work out the stance he would like it to take. At least all the arms & ball joints & bushes will be done. Any monkey can do the springs & shocks without scratching it. The existing front shocks are in good nick so they will get the job done for now. I priced a set of Koni adjustables but it is $550.00 better spent elswhere at this stage.
-
KYB gas adjust are about $140 a pair, work fine. 1/4 of a coil cut of the stock mustang coils looks good. Kings are about $90 a pair trade
-
Pics updated. Might need to start another album.
Time to make this puppy into an Eleanor!!!!
-
Another vote for KYB gas adjusts - pretty good value for money for how they perform.
soc123_au - you guys are really hooking in and making some serious progress.
Any closer to a colour choice??

Is Chip Foose and the A team there.... you fellas are going for it.... well done is looking great!:+

moving along like a well oiled machine. lookin good guys

Bas is coming for a visit tommorow night, we will try & nail down colour then.
We are pretty lucky here, we have some very good tradesmen. They are making good progress & the results are shaping up nicely.
-
:a:a:amate I'm over the moon!!!
How long has it been since it was picked up?....;x is that all???
i'll leave the hood question for Steve to answer.:f
-
The original bonnet had a nice bow through the the centre. The hinges had the original springs. Strangely enough the bonnet was steel with a glass scoop & some pecker head welded a couple of steel plates on the bonnet frame to try & stiffen it. The springs are now gone & we have a couple of options on what to use instead. The bonnet will live, we straightened it out to use it to check gaps. Thought it better to get gaps with an original bonnet & modify the fibreglass one to suit as opossed to gapping he car with an ill fitting bonnet.
-
A couple of pics of the Eleanor conversion. This will be a fairly slow process getting it all to fit.

Body kits never fit, wether its' for a Skyline or a Mustang, sanding and bog that's what fixes them. You'll have this primer in a week or so. Seems a shame to cover up all those new panels with fibre glass but it's Bas's car., not mine.
-
;x;z.......
Can't wait to be driving this beeeaast!!
Mo. thanks for persuading me to use the kit.....nothing like an elenaor.IMO.
Color: a freind asked me a question : "how many colors was the original Eleanor made in or how many colors is a MAD MAX beast come in?".....point taken. Pepper grey with black strips it is.:(
-
By the way Bas I dug out the that Power steer stuff, blew the bog dust of it and took some pictures. Doesn't look like it's been a part, since new still has factory tie rods which are stil ok, Chrome on the ram looks good, still has oil in it. I'm guessing a set of fresh seals a new ram boot ,hoses and it's sweat, thats all Id do if were going back in my car. PM me your email and I'll send some pics, no rush it's been sitting there for 2 years now. If you still want it let me know and I keep it for you.

It would have been nice if it only needed sculpting. It will be fine but some of the peices dont even go close. At least the quality of the fibreglass is good so the end result will be nice.

Bake them steve before you primer them, to make sure all the solvents come out of the glass. I did a cobra once and it played up in the primer(luckliy). We ended up bakeing it 3 times before it stopped playing up, after that the primer held out and the colour was fine. Doesn't matter of Jap cars cause they crash them all time so the paint dosen't have to hold out too long.
-
Been caught out with that before. Bas's kit has been is his garage for 4 years so it should be pretty well cured. His bonnet was RS so we are using my one which is pretty fresh. Once all the bolt on bits have been reshaped & fit properly they can get baked a few times with other jobs & then get a few coats of polyester to finish ironing them out. The glue on bits will get a bake tommorow before they get glued on.

Guy's what's the best adhesive to bond fibreglass to metal? Will it crack eventually? I'm thinking of putting some large scoops over my 67 quarter panel gills sorta like the Elnor thingy's but I need to blend them into the surrounding panels.

There are about 10 different types of side covers that I know of for the 67 that are similar to the Eleanor out there and of those only 2 I would use.
Bonding steel to fibre .... when I built my Allynor...every one that had built one (and I asked around) What was the best adhesive? and I really honestly thought I would get nothing but ..."use sikaflex"
Spoke to everyone that builds them....they all say
Use corvette body panel adhesive. DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE...thats just what they say...just passing it on
When blending them in use a product called DURAGLASS or a fibreglass body filla
PS. fibreglass sucks...I hate working with the shi1 :+
Hope that helps

We are using the 3M panel bond. It is what Holden use to glue the bootfloor in VE Commodores. The one we are using has a Holden part number, I will dig the invoice out shortly & post the part number up & you will be able to get it from a dealer. Sikaflex (windscreen eurathane) would do the job & be cheaper but the panel bond will be better. Most body kits are eurathaned on but that doesnt make it the best way.
-
nah..sorry steve, didnt mean the ozzie version sorry...all I can get over here in the Sika products is panelbond something or other or liquid nails. They do have SIKAflex window stuff but I cant find it anywhere but I probably wouldn't use that for the side scoops. Like you said, would work and cheaper but I wouldnt use it.
doin a great job

Steve, is the whole bonnet steel, or just steel reinforced?
Reason I ask is, im ordering a steel reinforced hood from either Fibreglass Specialties or Maier.. to be held up by RingBros or TCP hinges.. now they supply two types, one for glass one for steel, however my understanding was you had to get steel type for the steel reinforced glass hoods...??
Or is the steel frame not enough?
It is a full steel bonnet with the glass scoop moulded in. I imagine that the hinges are specific the the frame. If it is a full glass frame then the glass hinges would be needed. If it is a full steel frame with a glass skin then I think the steel hinges would apply. I am going to use standard hinges with no springs & a pair of gas struts on my car.

Part number for the Holden panel bond is 92146444

Thanks Guy's i'll get some panelBond and ty it out.

Mo, you're the ideas man. How bout you fab them up in steel Mate and i'll weld em on. I've never had much success over the years glueing bonnet scoups on etc without the filler cracking due to the adhesive flexing. This panebond goo may do the trick though.
-
Pics updated. Nearly a day so far to get one sides flares etc to fit. Then they need to be glued & moulded. Fun Fun Fun:(
-
those side flares take forever and the top ones...depending on the fibreglass mould....Geez. Its takin me half a day to fit one side of a gt350 top vent and Im still not happy with it.
Cool thing is, still got the other side to do.
Keep up the good work mate, comin along nicely.
will see what I can do about those lights for ya

Thanks Matt. The best part about fitting kits is when its finished. Nothing better than having a beer & admiring the finished product:2

Any decision on the colour yet stangLover?

;} ye original REMAKE of gone in 60 sec color....pepper grey black strips. All black deluxe interior with brushed alumium inserts on dooors and dash.:(......final decision.
-
now you need to update your avatar!
-
67s have to have black deluxe trim with the brushed alloy, it so 60's US muscle car, there is no other trim for them. Just like torque trust style wheels.
-
(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q88/Stu2067/stanglover.jpg)
-
have you got wheels or lights yet?
-
Thanks 67er.....
rickchampion, Steve the legend has offered to use his Eleanor light kit on mine, and he'll order another set. Ofcourse I'll pay him for them, but atleast we can finish this project sooner rather than having to wait for more parts to arrive from the states.
Wheels...not sure how they'll look, but will be putting on wheels that it came with for now. Budget is well over blown for now ::.....future upgrades: Eleanor style wheels, bigger engine, gearbox, suspension.
For time being, over the moon with just about a brand new car, with brand new interior.

Nice avatar pic! try this one.. (http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll309/6T9rustang/animated2.gif)

yeah headlight kit aint cheap,
900 us for em if u want pia

More pics, I now know why most of these have fake fuel fillers.
The lights are PIAA, they are not cheap. Most kits @$900.00 US dont include the headlamp brackets either.

Pics updated. The kit is glued & set. The moulding is underway.
-
THanks again to Steve for a great job he's doing.....
Looks like all the chromie bits that were thrown in a bucket and in the car are only good for rubbish :_
Now we're looking at a brand new chromie kit for the whole car.
mach70.....seeming that its autumn, my $$tree has shed just about every single $leaf......
For the time being, the Eleanor will be without a completed trim, front headlight setup and the old wiring harness will have to go back in.::
-
bas ,take a look on ebay in usa quite a few wiring harness on there a good used one for $150 you can always go for an aftermarket one from company like "painless" they are on the net but not sure of their charges.
-
I would put in a new wiring harness now while the body is a bare shell.
Save you some grief in the future I think.
Otherwise, car is looking really good.
Cheers,
Frank.

You can get a painless equivilent for around the $500.00 mark. The only problem is the labour required to get it operational. They basicly come as a fuse box & a massive bunch of wires & they need to have plugs soldered on. I have had a few quotes from electricians & its around $2000.00 to get one fitted. We are doing one in an XP Falcon & planned on doing it ourselves until we started running it. Definatly needs a competent sparky to install.
-
What wrong with the old one. There is a guy on the Mid north coast somewhere who will restore the stock one, new tape, replace crook wires, add extra cct etc, they come back like new. I have mate who had one done for a MK2 Jag, they changed the harness to suit an alternetor, A/C controls etc, and then re braided it in cotton , just like factory. I think he advertises in Austrlain classic car mag.
-
Yes I would do a lot of things now that its a bare shell.......but unfortunately the $tree has shed all its $$leaves....I'm only able at this stage to scrape the dollars needed to pay Steve for all his hard work and effort.
There was nothing wrong with old harness, everything was working after a fellow forum member came around and fixed it all up...unfortunately, he's now disappeared.
Apart from most of it being sprayed with the nice gloss black paint that the engine bay was covered in, it was working fine.
-
So un tape it and re tape it, if it works ok, it will look like new, cost you $20 in tape and some time. Just buy good tape.
-
I found with mine when I painted the car, some lights stopped working. Troubleshooting the problems I found breaks in the wiring obviously due to being brittle.
And I didn't completely remove my harness.
Bas might find when he puts the harness back in the car develops some mysterious electrical problems. Hopefully not.
Makes sense to me to address that now. just my 2c
Cheers,
Frank
-
The existing harness is pretty ratty. It apparently had a few shorts when Bas got the car & someone fixed it up but it needs a full going over. Also the front lamps will be drawing a fair bit of current so the existing circut will need some beefing up with relays & heavier guage wire. The guy that shaunp mentioned might be worth looking up. I am a bit over cautious with electrics & we can pull them out & reinstall them & do basic repairs but anything more major than that I steer clear of. Bad wiring = fire = lots of tears.

This guy does a great job, for sure, Snowy's car just worked when he connected it all up and it looks great, he gives you back all the crap he repalces, and will add stuff for you as well. If you can't find him I'll chase Snow up.
Are you painting body colour on the under carrige?
-
Nice job.
What is the filler you are using ? 2 part mix ?
The stuff I have been using is hard to work.
Cheers,
Frank.
-
This has to be the best documented restoration I've seen.
You should make a book out of it.
Sheet-metal certainly looks better than the start,
Bob
-
Ye one day when I'm retired I'll start writting the book......
It'll contain all the photos from the day it was presented to me as a "for sale fastback" with pics, to the finished product of transformation from a GT350 Clone to an Eleanor!!
The roller-coaster of highs when it arrived, to the lows of when the problems were found, the highs of finding a perfect gentleman and restorer to the lows of budget issues etc....:-:-......hopefully it'll have alot more highs than lows, such as fulfilling the dream of cruisin around for many years with the family, and eventually selling it for a mint to retire on and hence the beginning of writting this book......:+:+:w:w

K&H Mercury body filler is the main filler. Davids P40 fibreglass filler to mould the kit on & a combination of 3M & Holden panel bond for glueing the kit. The holden panel bond had too much give in it for the edges that are moulded.
Shaunp if you have the details of that sparky that would be great, I can give him a call & tell him what is required & then Bas can see if he wants to give the money tree one last big shake::
-
The under body will be stoneguarded. I am leaning towards giving it a coat of body colour over the top. I will of course discuss this with Bas first.
-
:( body colour for the underside it is!
Thanks Steve....no fries with that thanks.:+.....
-
Ok I rang Snow about the reco wireing harness guy, he used to be at Belligen Northern NSW, he has retired and sold the busines to a guy in VIC, may still be worth a call.
http://www.vinwire.com.au/
-
Thanks Shaun I will look into it.
-
More pics, underneath stoneguarded & base coated.
-
;x;_;z.......I'm speechless.....and words can't describe how excited I am..:a
-
That's the go, you have paint the underside properly or the look crap. Geez baz you better paint all your running gear nice, and get all your bolts/nuts barrell plated, can't stop now.
-
....I'm sure Steve know what he's doing. I have 100%confidence in his workmanship....
Not that i'm going to have it at car shows with mirrors underneath.....;+

Bas what I ment was I hate to see big dollar cars that aren't painted nice on the underside ie. black jack or GMH black over grease and dirt.
-
Looking Great!
this is my favourite post love watching the process and progress i feel part of it and love it when the pics are updated!
Keep up the great work and keep it coming!;_

;x;x;x
Bas... I leave the country for a while and look what you do.
What a thread, the up's, the downs, more downs... and now look at it ;_
Whay an amazing read.
As for the electrical, I would replace the loom. Even though everthing was working, it was still losing voltage somewhere. The rear wiring that I did was a quick fix job to get you on the road, it still needed to have the proper connections and plugs fitted. Alot of the problems you had were brittle wiring casings. This was not helped by the generous supply of gloss black paint that covered EVERYTHING. The fact that it has been removed, means that it has been bent and twisted. This would have cracked alot more of the casing and also broken alot of the wiring. You will only find out how bad this is when you refit everthing and try to make electrical things work. :[:[:[ They may work at 1st but if the wire has been cracked/broken it will burn out in a short amount of time. This can just be a simple electrical failure or at worst a full blown fire as it heats up and starts to burn carpet or plastic or the like.;x
As suggested earlier this is a good point to upgrade all the wiring due to the new lights. By installing relays, all switches can run on low amp voltage. This gives switches a much longer life. It also means you will have higher current available to all lights = brighter lights.
Just my $2.53 worth...
The St Marys Prestige boys are doing an awesome job Bas. They must be putting in some late nights like you and me did in the begining. (Now when was that).... :w
Atleast you did have ago at driving the beast before all this started, even if it was illegally and broke every anti-hoon law :*

this item may be a cheap solution till better times???

-
i'm currently using an EZ 21 circuit system and it's pretty straight forward to install but you do need some auto elec experience.
-
Thats what I used on my car and was well worth it, no wiring issues. Great value
-
That is what it needs. Cheap enough to buy but unfortunatly it doesnt self install. A couple of sparkys I have spoken to want around the $2000.00 mark to install it allowing for switches & other bits required to get it up & running. As I stated in an earlier post we can do minor electrical stuff anything major I sublet. Cant specialise in everything.
-
:-:-..budget budget budget.......
unfortunately once its all painted, engine, gear box, suspension, brakes, steering, heater box, exhausts, new chromies all round, windscreens, and wheels are refitted, it'll have to sit in the garage until the budget allows for the following:
1.Eleanor front light setup
2.New wiring harness
3.complete interior refit
4.the new braking setup adjusted
(Steve, have i missed something?)
Then it'll be ready for rego
So as good as this thread is and how quick we've moved forward, unfortunately it'll slow down dramatically unless I can somehow shake another 6-8grand out of that $$$tree
Looks like that retirement plan is gonna have to wait....::
-
Stanglover keep on buying those lotto tickets mate you just never know!
-
That should pretty much cover it Bas. Until you update to a firebreathing 347 , Tremec, nine inch & nitrous. And dont forget the pimp my ride style flat screens & stereo. An extra 50 Gs should have you all finished:w:w:w
Seriously though when it leaves us all you should need is:
Wiring $2500.00 approx
Trim & Fitting $4000.00 approx
Brake lines etc $750.00 approx
Front lamps $1500.00 - $1800.00 approx depends on customs slugging duty
Then if you want Eleanor wheels & exhaust down the track, in my opinion that stuff can be done whenever you have $$ burning a hole in your pocket once its on the road. Until then it wont quite be an Eleanor it will be an Ellen:p
-
Haha - Ellen; I like it!!!

Snow said, that mob restored, tested, add, bitts to, replaced dud bits and labeled all wires for easy connection, for about $600 and that was for briaded cotton not tape. Looks and works like new.

well that sucks stang,over,
so no eleanor yet?
how long till u reckon u will have lights and wiring?
at least u will have a nice talking point and bragging point for visitors:-)
-
I rang the vintage wiring guys, I am waiting for them to call back with an approximate cost. The $2500.00 is based on a painless type setup & instalation.
-
Think they will do all the indicator wireing as well. I better go get some beer, can't work on car on Sunday, listening to the Sunnyboys with out beer.

A couple more pics added. Might be time to start album number 4;2

Steve did you polyester it, or just primer it a few times?
-
Polyester, then a good chop with 120 followed by 240. Then Primer. The upper & lower aprons still need to be primed, wanted to get lights in first in case they need a bit of a tweak.

Your car will will be dressed to impress when its done.
Look forward to seeing it.

-
Thanks John,
Can't thank Steve from St Marys Prestige Body Repairs enough for all the work, effort, and freindship.
He has made the sour taste in my mouth turn to sweet honey!
Its been helova journey, from the day i decided to purchase it, the day it finally arrived, the day i found out it was a bucket of Sheit rust box, the day it arrived at Steves joint, to the day that I saw the above photos of the progress. Obviously I'm still awaiting the day that I finally turn the ignition and drive it.
-
Just keep looking at that avatar.
The eleanor mustangs are a 100% real head turner.
I'll be watching the cars progress and await the big day.
When you take your first drive, I think you may have a few spectators from this forum.
Maybe it should be deeemed a club run!!
Kind Regards,
John
-
Stanglover,
Your first outing will require video taping & plastered on youtube ... as Thirsty390 says ... you will have all forum members hanging to see her come out of the workshop.
What's the target date for the finished product.
Cheers, Caretaker

+1 for video, and lots of pics. Good work:(

I never noticed they don't have the front bumper there before.
I like chrome.

not sure about target date, can't be too long now, maybe a month or so? Steve? watyareckon?....definately not rushing, still gotta finalise organising funds ::
-
4 to 6 weeks roughly. depends on what we do with the wiring. I will get some more pics today. Nothing really exciting, paint prep is like watching grass grow.

Pics updated. Inside is now black. I will get pics of that tommorow as it is still cooking.

So is the firewall on those things not the satin black??
-
Originaly the whole bay is satin black. This thing is a long way from concourse correct. Its just a personal taste thing weather body colour or black.

So......are you doing it silver or black????
-
Sorry 67er I didnt realise the pic of the firewall was only on the photo bucket page. I thought you were trying to point out that the colour was incorrect.
-
Hey Bas what colour is the final finish going to be? The dupont pepper grey or????
-
I think that's a question for Steve, I'm only the customer :w
-
Pepper Grey all the way. What do you mean you are only the customer Bas, being the customer makes you king of the castle:(
-
I'm so glad you've gone for Pepper Grey,Bas. It looks fantastic.
Bob
-
Bas i like that colour very much. may have to pinch the code ;2
Also like Steve said Bas u the king as long as u payif u dont than u become the pray :w
Steve wicked job.
I usualy paint the engine bays black but i think on the muzzy im going same colour as the car.that looks sweet. ;_
-
Yeah, I like the engine bays body colour on fords. Black makes it look like an afterthought, the cars all done & oh crap I forgot the engine bay where did that black gun get to:w:w Seriously though each to their own & a properly done satin black bay looks nice & clean.
-
No more front drums:p
http://s608.photobucket.com/albums/tt169/St_Marys_Prestige/Bas%20Fitup/
-
Ok, now the anticipation of seeing it with a bit of color is killing me.....its getting nerve rackin!
Steve, give us some photos of ur beast as well, its been a while.....and I know you've done a lot more ::
-
Yes more pics please, thought you may be keeping us in suspense stanglover.
-
He must be holding out on the pics. Waiting to suprise you with the finished product! It must be getting close. EXCITING!!!
-
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but paint prep is tedious & boring. No new pics yet we are still putting all the suspension & brake related parts back in. Stuff is happening but it doesnt look much in photos. Having a flat stick week last week didnt help much either. Dont worry though the next batch of pics should be worth the wait. My car hasnt been touched for over a week, still need to cut up the dash & do the plenum.
-
Steve continue carrying out what ur mood says"Living The Dream ", keep working on ur car as well....would love to have both of them finish about the same time so we can go cruzin......how cool would that be?...i promise to be patient.:(
-
Now are both going to be the same colour???
-
:* nope. Steves' going a kick arse color....candy-apple red steve?
Although mine will look more like the original Eleanor on the outside, Steves' will be more like it in the engine and underneath department....where it really counts i guess!:(.
-
You will be cruizin before me Bas, although I will try not to be to far behind. I cant wait until we can go for a nice cruize in the 2 cars , should turn some heads.
Mo I am going a HOK Candy red at this stage with silver stripes. It will have all the TCP stuff underneath, Willwood Brakes, Injected big block & AOD.
-
(http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt169/St_Marys_Prestige/Bas%20Fitup/21762-218.jpg)
Still getting all the mechanical stuff back in, not too much left now. Then we can get some paint on this bad boy.
-
Bas needs to sort out the booster later, the budget doesnt allow for it at this stage. We just put the stocker back in so it can have some brakes for moving it around.
-
(http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt169/St_Marys_Prestige/Bas%20Fitup/21762-220.jpg)
Rear brakes are done, just need to fit the heaterbox & its back to the paintshop:p

;2...thanks Steve, doing a grrrreat job!
Can't wait to see some paint on it :(

Here we go, a bit more of a tease. It will stay in the booth till Monday. These pics are about 10 seconds after the last coat of clear. Dont mess yourself Bas:w
-
does look nice, was it the dupont paint? how many layers.
details please steve :)
-
TENT CITY !!!!!!!
-
No its not Dupont. The colour is originaly a Dupont fleet colour. It was formulated for Kenworth as one of their truck colours. It is readily available in most paint brands, we mix our own obviously based on a manufactures formula.
Details, 3 coats of base coat followed by 2 coats of clear. Pretty boring I know, but dont believe the bullsh1t you read in magazines about the amount of paint that is on their cars.
The panels should get some love on Monday, then we will bolt it up & do the stripes. Then one more rubdown & a flowcoat with 2 more coats of clear. It looks pretty hot now, but when its flowcoated it will look like you could swim in it.
-
Poor old Stanglover is stuck in traffic, I sms'd him to tell him pics are up. I hope he doesnt have a prang trying to rush home to get online. :+

Cool or is that Cruel!
-
A Flowcoat is basicly just cutting the topcoat back & re clearing it. The reason for it is when you paint the car to start with you are applying basecoat 2 to 5 coats depending on coverage over the top of the primer, then 2 to 3 coats of clear. You end up with generaly at least 5 coats of paint. Each layer of paint will have a little bit of peel (for want of a better description) each coat magnifies the last coat. Also primer is more pourus than a clear coat so it can suck the paint in a little bit which also can detract from the finish. The best way to do it is cut the clear back flat, with either 1200 wet or 600 dry on a dynabrade. Then bake the crap out of it to release any sovents still in the paint. Then lay on 2 nice even wet coats of clear. The result is a deeper wetter looking finish. You can also cheat & just cut it & buff it, but a buff will never ever ever get it as glossy & deep as off the gun. Dont get me wrong you dont need to flowcoat but on the right car it gives it that bit extra.
-
Absolutely Speechless;x
-
Really nice colour.
Well done.
Cheers,
Frank.

A flow coat is just that. you paint the car, block it back again and flow one or 2 more coats of 2k clear. By doing this you get one more chance to sand out any imperfections in the car. Also allows you to paint the clear over totally flat surface so peel or any crap that may have got in the colour coats etc is gone, saves time on cutting cuase the peel, crap etc is to a minimum. You only do on nice cars or if you stuff up on an average car. On this car Steve has to do it anyway so the stripes will blend in and not have a masked edge. But flow coating is the way to get a realy smick finish. For anyone spraying 2k in a shed this is a good way to minimse dust in the clear, paint it rub and clear it again, this way any dust is just in the top clear coat, and rubs out easy, before you cut it.
-
Thanks Shaunp, Just the terminology got me.

Nice job steve...really nice job.
I allways paint my stripes first but I might try what shaunp is saying on Ricks Eleanor and do the stripes last
Nice work son

Horn food, almost enough to go gooy in the fork over
-
Steve, not a good look gettin a hard on while i'm still sittin at my desk at work :w
-
That is one impressive looking peice of history in the making.
It is as much a "transformation" as it is a "restoration":(
(I have a spare tent if you need to replace the torn tent, or a patch repair kit may do the trick)
Nice work St Marys. Pleasure to keep following this thread.

I'll second that :(
Baz, 18's suit the rear:
I know they are the wrong offset for the front, what are you plans on sizes??
-
Bas
just a bit of trivia.
when you contacted me long way back (gotta be 12 months ago) I found a J code fastback EXACTLY like your red one. You had allready bought yours before I could send it. So i tried to buy it for myself either way. Guy wanted $10500. I emailed him tried to call him everything. he wouldnt sell it to me as I said it was going to Aus.
well Im now searching for another customer and he has it advertised for $8500 (12 months later)
same car
talk about cut off ya nose to spite your face ( sounds like my X wife)
wont sell it for $10500 as he doesnt want it to leave the country but quite happy to take $2k less after 12 months
I actually contacted this guy when I was looking for yours, just didnt get back to me in time
what a toss
-
Hey Matt.......
yep. that was a while ago..... and about 12 months later, I still don't have a car to drive :w......just kidding Steve!
It's all good Matt, you win some u lose some.
Just can't wait till this beast in my garage starting her up again like i did when it was red (and full of rust underneath). Little did I know what would become of it aye?!;2
-
Do those side exhaust holes function?
Or does the twin system go all the way to the rear?
-
All the way to the rear as we're using the same pipes for now.
Future upgrade, after I gain rego, will be to make those sweet side pipes functional. ::
-

Now its staring to look like a car again.
-
;x;x;x;z;z......luuuuurve the rear pipes :w
They've definately gotta go one i get rego on her.
-
Nice! Now the fun part..
-
Still got to stripe it, once thats done it will really start to look good.
-
Lookin fantastic Steve, nice job.....bet ya cant wait ta finish...I mean do some work on your own car :+
Great job mate
I wish the kit rick ordered had those head light buckets built in like that or did you get them seperate and prefit em?
I hate doin the head lights on Eleanors...what a pain
nice work anyway fellas...you guys at St,marys doin a fantastic job
-
hey matt i brought special buckets in the light kit, check the link i sent ya via email
-
Looking good, Bas you must be a happy man.
-
The headlight buckets are HQ Statesman, it seems some kits suit the 7 inch headlamps & some the 5 & 3/4 lights. I think it doesnt matter which way you go the headlamps are a bit of mucking around. I will be glad to see it finished, mainly I cant wait to see the look on Bas's face when its all back together. Also I like the feeling of looking at a finished product & thinking wow we did that.

Hopefully the taxman looks after me tomorrow....we're getting really close to the final Countdown!:a

Well, Accountant, I should have said, was definately worth travellin half an hour to get to......
;2.......should definately help in payin off Steve for the legendary work he has done.
Also, been today to Steve's joint to check out the progress in da flesh.........
Steve thought I was a bit 'subjude' in my reaction......but I was more overwhelmed!....
Felt I was looking at someone elses' car not mine.
I think reality and the excitement will smack me bang in the face once I turn that key over and drive it home.:p:p
-
I took the back original windscreen to him.....but having seen the prestene condition of the car, I don't think my scratched-out back windscreen will look any good back on the car.
Anyone know what a new back windscreen for a 67 fastback costs?
-
not for sure but I think its $300us....roughly
-
try your local parts supplier, stangLover, some have contacts for getting the glass locally.
-
Sean at BossKraft can get them locally
http://www.bosskraft.com/
-
Classic auto glass does them too 03 93054000

Masking out the stripes. Bit of a time consuming process, wont be long now & it will be looking sharp.

where does the front number plate sit on those????

On the dash up against the front windscreen......:w
Good question......Steve?

John Bailey's Car

Most states in the US don't worry too much, but you can get pinged in CA if no front license plate. But they still do it.
I would not try that here in NSW. I have seen plates made as a decal & applied to the intake, but the regultation says that it must be readable from a certain distance (not sure of the distance) & you can make the plate yourself as long as you get it passed by the RTA. The specs are available from them.
-
on a serious note. i know it will look ugly but it will save u lot of hassles with the police.
u can get a sticker made up and position it on left side on your front bar. idealy u want to put it on the rhs as it will be blocked from side cameras but they prob pin you for that too.:w
or u get custom plates low profile ones from ur local RTA. make a bracket just under the center of the spoiler. (just bellow the big driving lights u going to have in the center) alternatively possibly above the lights as well.
in SA they have to be approved Transport SA plates. sticker ones u can get away with but they need to look very close to original plates.
but if they want to be pain they will get u for the stick ons too.
-
;x..........looks like we'll have to go back to the GT350Clone.......
There goes the Eleeeanor drrreeeeeammm.....
-
Not sure about the front plate. Years ago you only had to have a rear one. I am going to try just running a rear plate & plead ignorance if I get questioned. If you arent being a hoon I rekon you will be right.
-
thats what my local rozzers told me too steve.
-
;+ front plates? what ya mean? they were there this morning!!:::2
-
my mate did that on his car removed the front plate. but kept it inside the car with one screw.
we got pulled over
the policeman was getting his book out we started pleeding said it fell of while we went through car wash. (we just washed the car) showed him the evidence. he sugested to stick it on the dash till we find another screw to refit it back asap.
lol....
i think from memory he constantly got pulled over. never got a fine but refitted it for hassle free motoring.
-
thats what i was thinking SUSPECT. that looks preety good. cool plate
-
and $90k for the car, shame it's an auto

Get a stick on one.
Guys in my BM club have them routinely. They can be small like on that Eleanor.
Seen them on Ferraris and the like too.
Cheers,
Frank.
-
I dont like the way that kit has been fitted on that 90k Eleanor. Its all screw on stuff and stocky mirrors...stocky fuel cap
Love the 428 but....NICE
Cars coming along nice steve. Pin stripes sure suck up time dont they mate. Looking good
Matt

ChilliChadd & Matt
Re; the Ebay car,
Yes nice car, however, did you notice it must have 4 wheel unboosted drum brakes? Look at the master cylinder. That would be fun to pull up!
I like the bolt on kit as the moulded kits crack when driven due to differing expansion rates & flexibility. Real problem in these cars as they move so much.
The movie cars were junk by the end of the movie, but that was expected.
I have seen a few Eleanors around Sacramento that were "moulded" cars & after 2 years of part time driving (I used to see them at cruise nights) they were worse for wear. Usually around the rocker area, front valance & fender extensions. All panels that have movement cracked.
If I was spending big money on building one, I would be doing major research before commencing the project, as they can be built correctly for the intended use.
Not saying any of the projects here are bad, actually all seem quite well done, just the intended use could be a problem.
-
I definatly agree on not moulding the front aprons & qtr extensions. Joining 2 bolt on panels is begging for trouble. Moulding glass onto steel is fine as long it is a single panel & the correct bonding & moulding material is used. If you eurathane it on & bog it it will crack. BMW. Mercedes & GM have been glueing cars together for years among others, just gotta use the million dollar glue. I moulded a bonnet scoop on my Rx2 in 94, it had lots of hard driving perched a few feet away from a red hot hairdryer. The car was sold to England in 2005 & it looked as good as it did the day it rolled out of the booth 11 years earlier when it was driven to the docks.
The front plate on Suspects pic looks acceptable, if I get any grief with mine I will go that way. Still plenty of time to worry about that though.
-

Matt
I like the upper side scoops, that is what I am using on mine, that one doesnt fit that well though & they made the stripes too wide. Still a hot looking car, I might have to loose my bullet mirrors, the stockers look smokin:w
The stripes yeah good fun, 2 guys & 4 hours later they are masked out. Back in the booth tommorow arvo & lay those suckers down, YEAH BABY:a
-
Steve,
how wide did you do the stripes?...I cant remember how wide I did mine...I think I used the metric version of a "guestimation" but they will be in those shoes of layin stripes on thursday next week with Ricks car
They take so long to do and very frustrating :_
I was lucky, mine was a convertible...easy peasy

You got your brakes sorted yeah..?
Brakes only slow you down, I thought the objective was to go fast:+
-
Matt I dont think you could use an exact measurement for the stripes. To get the centre line ( that stays body colour) we ran a length of 1/4" fine line down the centre of the ridge, then a piece of 3/4 of each side of that followed by another length of 1/4. To get the outer line you have to trade off between the plenum grille & bonnet scoop & use a bit of judgement on what looks good. I spent ages googling pics trying to find a reference point on the plenum grille but most of them are different, or you cant see the grilles clearly enough to tell. I think it depends on the size of the bonnet bulge in relation to the plenum. I think we have it right, will find out in a few hours. I will take some pics showing the plenum etc when it comes out.
-
Yeah, I did pretty well the same....think I fluked it though.
And yes...ebay and eleanor googling just never gives ya what ya really really want
But if I write this " Pin stripes for Eleanor mustang" someone will find this site now :(

:+

How does that thing turn:w:w Nice colour combo!
-
Never too late Bas, how much cash have you got??:w
I like the super snake stripes, thats what will be going on mine.
-
I think it'll have to wait for the next Eleanor build ::
But ye, definately like SS stripe!
-
nice one Bas. jus the pic i was looking for :( :+
thats what i want for mine except ill go shelby stripes on mine minus the elanor kit and that big bonnet hump.
ahhh cant wait to start working on it. too many ideas and not getting them put down to practice drives me nuts.:_
though slowly putting my shoping list together. ;)
not long to go now Bas till your beast is on the road. lucky u.
-
yeye.....can't wait, next it'll go to Autoelec for all new wiring, then upholsterer to fit the deluxe interior, then home!! woohoo...
-
Deluxe u say.
so what are the deluxe door trims going to set u back Bas. also from memory aint the seats slightly different design from std to deluxe. ie chrome strip going all around the seat?
im looking to see how much deluxe interior is going to set me back.
-
ye, deluxe complete kit cost me about $3grand from Capital Classics.
That included roof linning, carpet, deluxe door trims with deluxe handles etc, dashpad, dash brushed aluminium inserts, kickpanles with speaker holes, sunvisors, foam for all seats, trim for all seats.....ummm not sure if i've missed anything else, i've got the list somewhere.
I ordered the deluxe interior when the car first arrived, thinking that's all it required, little did I know what was lurking underneath the shiny paint.....having said that, I would of ordered deluxe interior anyway.

have you changed it to black? or is it still going to be red inside?
-
Na...all black with the brushed aluminium inserts in the dash and the doors.....
I think it would have looked really odd to be red inside and the pepper grey outside.
Maybe, the next eleanor build will be completely customised.;)

So Mark looked after you? he seems a good guy!

Mo. maybe next time. For now I'm more than happy with the color combo and the whole outcome.
Steve?!.....I don't remember owning an air filter?!....that looks ;_

Thats a little present, there is another little present that still has to be fitted that will make you smile as well.

That black/red car is crazy !
Most slammed 'Stang I've seen.
Any more pics of it ?
Bonnet is kinda weird tho - different I guess.
Cheers,

-
sorry i am a couple of days behind on this thread.
Congrats Bas - your car is gonna look great.
Cheers,

ye as much as I love the 'keep it original', I've always had a soft spot for those creative bunch who go all out on customising.

check out all the pics of that beast on the following:

rickchampion:
Next is off to the auto-electrician to get all new wiring installed, after that it will be to the upholsterer for interior.:p
-
so a week at each place?
whos gonna be taking pics then?
so whats steve got left do to?
grilles?
badges? fuel filler? rubbers and windows?
-
Over to you steve.....hehe
I think all of the above plus don't forget the most important : HEADLIGHTS
-
We will be getting it to "lock up" stage. Basicly from the outside it will look finished apart from the correct wheels & the Landcruiser suspension. Also we will fit the new rubbers etc. Its looking horny, I will get a few more pics this arvo. We are fitting the boring stuff at the moment, door catches & strikers etc.

Do need to cut it anywhere, or did you get it in one?

New album started. A couple of new pics, nothing particularly exciting yet.

I ment did it come out the booth ok, no need to rub an cut anything, small run off an edge, etc
-
Sorry must be having a no brain day, It came out nice probably 4 bits in the whole job. They are that small I would leave them alone. I will show Bas where they are & if he wants them cut then we will. I reckon its better to leave it off the gun that touch it with a buff. Although these ones will probably cut with a diamond cutter & a hand polish.
-
Yeah once you start cutting where do you stop.
-
Steve, you're going to have to put up more photos of your car now - how's it progressing?
Bob
-
Mine has ground to a halt, waiting on a few parts to finish the rhd conversion. Hopefully another week or so & we can get back into it.

Needs lowering about a foot, other than that its coming together.
http://s608.photobucket.com/albums/tt169/St_Marys_Prestige/Bas%20Final%20Fit%20Up/
-
Does anything go around the main head lights? Looks funny in the head on picture.
-
No thats how it goes. We are going to paint the adjusters & headlamp rim tags black so it isnt as noticable. The only way of changing it is to use 7" lamps mounted behind. The problem with that is you cant adjust them & the way this apron has been made they will look terrible.
-
Steve, that looks like a 4WD version of an Eleanor?!;w
May just need to drop a bigger motor in the front instead of wasting money on lowering suspension :w
-
Yeah it either needs lowering or put a front diff under it. It should settle a bit but nowhere near enough.
-
Loookin ;_........... but if I may say it before anyone else does:
Those front head lights do look a little odd, not sure if its just da photo but the headlights look too small for the space?!
-
Bas, atleast you won't have to worry about crunching your front apron in the local shopping centre car park.
Median strips won't bother you either.
Geez.. you could probably enter into the next MONSTER TRUCK exhibtion at Homebush :w:w:w:w
sorry mate, could resist :+
J1

See what you've done Steve, now its the laughin stock.....lol, just kidding.
Can't wait to hear it roar down my street again:

Yeah but it will be slower now cause it has less bog more steel:w

;x.....maybe that's why its sitting so high??!!....Steve, maybe a bit of bog will do da trick to get it slammin......lol

Bugger I knew we did something wrong, we will have to get it blasted & start again:w
Might be cheaper to get some lowered springs. Have a look at your pics when you first got it, it always looked like landcruiser:*
-
This does look lower though.....
-
Hey steve, see in the above pic......the headlight surround, that's what i was talking about lastnight (that one happens to be broken hence why its sticking out a bit.
Would that fix the issue?....just thought i'd point it out.
-
It does look lower in that pic, I wouldnt have thought the front would be much lighter than it was before.
The rims in that pic are the wrong size. We are going to have a play with it & see what we can come up with.
-
lookign sweet Steve and Bas. to combat your 4wd stance just whack 4wd wheels :w even for the laugh. landcruiser 5stud should fit first AWD Eleanor
or alternatively get steve to strip it again and use lead fill instead of body filler :w
yeah im just taking a piss ;} :w
sure u can fix the 4wd stance with new springs and reseting the rear.
once the glass and interior goes in it should be bit lower that glass weighs a ton itself.
as for the headlight gap. get a alloy ring made up and get it painted or annodised.
should look lot better. personaly i prob get it polished so it make the headlight look bigger.
-
money money money.....what a headache money is.......
Just been chattin to Steve, would prefer everything gets done there, ie; interior, wiring brakes...etc.......basically, my preferance is to show up there, turn the key and drive it outta there, leavin behind a nice fish tale from steves' drive way to remind him of the headache he had in his garage since April!
The alternative, is to transport it to an auto electrician, then a brakes specialist place, then an upholsterer, then my home.....I'm sure by the time it gets back to my place, it'll need to go back to Steve's for another paint job ::
-
I'm with you stanglover.....turn key and leave.
-
hehe....classic for a classic car!
TurnKey is optimum, but da dosh just aint there.::
Lookin at another 5g for interior purchase, fitting, wiring and brakes issue finalised.

are you putting any gt500 badges on her at all?
steve if so do you rivet them on or glue them

Brakes only slow you down; i thought you wanted to go quick!
I don't mind the look of your current rims on Elly; suit her quite well.:(
-
This car is coming along amazingly,
fantastic work to all involved
:(
-
Rick, the badges will be going on. They come with studs on the back that go through holes drilled in the panel, then little push on clips over the back. Although I am considering cutting the studs off & using double sided tape. 2 reasons
1. I dont have to drill holes
2. If some pelican decides to try & steal a badge if it is taped on they will get it, but are a lot less likely to damage anything else. If it is on with the studs they will wreck the badge & the panel its attached to.
Badges have been taped onto cars for years so staying on there (without interference) isnt an issue. They will go on once I make up my mind which will be best.
-
Steve
Im considering cutting those tabs off too mate for those exact reasons
Nice work mate the car looks AMAZING
You guys do a FANTASTIC JOB
-
no will still mine chop or that will get a 410 in the knee ha
-
Bas those wheels look ok on it in the pictures, even better when it's droped a bit, save your money for something else you really need.! You can try some Kings, 6 cyl lowered XF springs in, they are about $100 trade last time I got a set. I think the part number may be KFFL-01 but not sure.
-
I dont mind the wheels either. Its looking like it will be a driver when it leaves here, once its all done if there is enough change left in Bas's ashtray we will get it lowered before it goes. Its not expensive but on top of everything else it adds up. Poor old Bas is going to be living on baked beans for the next year as it is::
-
He could save $$ by ditching the baked beans and going for home brand 2min noodles.
At least his priorities are right!
-
:( looking realy good. i love the rims. what brand size are they? ill be getting something very similar for mine.
poor. Bas the baked beans the good ones are sometimes on special. so stock up next time. ::
-
American Racing 17 x 8. These ones are for sale so Bas can get the Eleanor ones.
-
Hey Steve, ;x , maybe its me being a Dikhead, but should the stickers on the side have an 'E' at the end of 500?...or is that yet to come?
-
Some have an E, we sat it on yours & it looked censored Aed so we left it off.
-
should put a $ there instead where the E went.:f
It's looking good and coming along very nicely
-
hehe nice touch Mo.
If the wheels are so nice, someone should buy them......lol.
Have a great weekend everyone, I'll be working to pay for u know what :-;+
-
Well Bas I'm having a beer in the shed, looking at my A/C blower, ocassional I go over to my freshly built toploader and change some gears on that Mr Gasket shifter, got to love beer and old cars. Your car is looking great you must be stoked
-
(http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt169/St_Marys_Prestige/Bas%20Final%20Fit%20Up/21762-278.jpg)
A pic for Shermatt with the Baja Bug Mirrors, have fun fitting them on Ricks car, when you do it you will understand:w:w
(http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt169/St_Marys_Prestige/Bas%20Final%20Fit%20Up/21762-279.jpg)
& a nice rear end. We were hoping to be further along, but as they say stuff happens. I wish we had of pulled it apart as everytime we go to put something original back on there is bits missing, luckily we can rat stuff off my car for the moment. Dont panic about he boot alignment to the qtr extension in the pic, the bump rubbers & seals are off:(
-
It's looking great mate, all coming together now :(
-
Hey steve did you use a special double sided tape for badges so they stay on?
-
The double sided tape is just 3M stuff, nothing special. The 3M is pretty good quality though.
-
yeah dont get Bear branded stuff i found out it falls off on a hot day.
3M branded is the only go for resonable money
though i did get my hands on some japanese stuff at work 4cm x 2cm stuck two Aluminuim 50x50 L channels together to form a T no way u can break it appart. even with screwdriver. it made a mess out of the channels.
though for holding badges 3m is more than adequate.
as for rims if they were 17x8 and 17x 9.5 same style i would have contact you.want big deep dish and need big rubber at the back
-
What stage are we at now Bas ???
This thread has been quite for just over a week ;x
J1
-
I know, everyone has been overwhelmed by "hookin a brotha up" thread.....
I wish him all the best, and I'm sure he will be feel so humble with the amount of attention he and his car has received.
Right now i'm not sure, Steve calls me all the time to give me updates, I know the roof lining has gone in. I'm going over there tonight to drop off the seats so the upholsterer can get crackin onem.
So I believe there's only the wiring and the rest of the interior to be done. CC has delivered all the interior to Steve so he has everything he needs to finish it off.
Unfortunately, I had to purchase the custom coloured (red/white strips) seat covers for front and rear, so they'll be up for sale, as everything is going to be deluxe black and brushed aluminium inserts etc...:_ that extra cash could have bought me a new steering wheel. oh well, you live and learn!
-
poor Bas dont worry i check this daily.
as for parts u may have for sale expecialy interior stick some pics up or write a list. i need few things. ;}
cant wait to see the finished car. pitty it will be some time before i get crackin on mine. though ideas never stop comming in. :-
now looking at 3 and 4 link setups for the rear. :_
-
No, we haven't forgotten you:+:+
-
Yeah Bas, we're as pumped as ever for you to get rollin'! Not long now buddy.
Cheers Bee
-
Bas,
Having seen what u have gone thru with yours gave me the inspiration to give mine a shot when the world seemed to collapse around me when I realised the enormity of the task ahead. I was despondant and downcast and the project was as good as doomed.
I have constantly read your thread as I know throughout the whole process u would have had your good and bad times.
I'm sure we all endure those frustrations in pursuit of our dreams. In this situation being for the love of our Mustang's.
As your car nears completion I wish u all the best with it and may u get many years of enjoyment because u sure deserve it given what u expected of the car when you first took possession.
Cheers mate and good luck. :(
-
Sorry for the lack of updates gents, the sparky is dragging the chain a little bit & we are at a bit of a standstill. Cant complain about the price though so a bit of stop start is to be expected. The seats have been stripped of the old trim & surprise surprise the frames were RS. Its all good now though they are repaired, painted & ready to be sent back to the trimmer. Told you not to panic Bas:p I will get some pics of the frames tommorow, not very exciting but better than nothing.

I think you & Bas will both be happy campers in the not too distant future. Once you are both cruising around the bad memorys will seem like a lifetime ago & believe it or not make you enjoy the sweet times even more. It sucks getting shafted, you should have seen my bucket when it arrived, I nearly cried. Bas saw it & I think he felt a little better that he wasnt alone. They will all be headturners when they are finished & thats all that matters:(
-
Bas, maybe heading up to Sydney at the end of the week. Will give you a call.
Steve, it would be good to catch up and check out the dream palace that is your work shop where nightmares are turned into dreams.
J1
-
Dreams are for turning into reality. All it takes is a plan of attack and support. There is no end of support on here and if the financials can be organised "live the dream".
We all wait for you guys to have your smiles restored, then we all will have our reward too.
Can't wait to hear about your first cruises.
-
Thanks guys....really lost for words.
Steve has been nothing but a dream come true. Sorry for sounding a bit gay, not that there's anything wrong with that but I like nothing more than "meat curtains" ::
Justin, can't wait to catch up with ya mate, its been a while, I really thought I'd never see you again, thought you'd be shipped off to S.AFRICA or China....
Never thought this project would end up like this, and you are all correct, it'll be more enjoyable once its all finished and on the road.
I have seen it several times throughout its rebuild, and at times, really just felt like I was looking at someone else's car. It still doesn't feel like its mine. I think reality will hit once I have it parked in my garage.:a

Here you go Bas, the seat frames are looking a little less RS. The trimmer will be picking them back up today.
J1 give me a call when you are in town, would love to put a face to the name. 0414 752 461

:( legend Steve.....looking brand new!!
I really thought I'd have to give up the Tuna for lunch to buy new seats.::
-
Wow
This project just gets better and better.
Well done Stanglover, cant wait to see it on the road.
Don't give up the tuna as yet, I know I haven't, although at times it did look bleak! haha

common post pics so we can drool and dream while stuck at work :_
-
I will get some more pics tommorow arvo, the outside will look finished by then. Its all slowed down waiting for parts. Its going to the sparky next Wedenday. He started doing it here but it will get more attention parked in the middle of his workshop. When it gets back we can finish the trim & then send it to get the brakes sorted. Then Back to Bas's house.
-
:a:a:a......My birthday is October 6th. So what timing aye!!...I'm sure it'll be in my garage before then.
Steve, gotta sort out that suspension, I don't think my garage ceiling is high enough:+
-
Yes I priced up a transfer case & front diff for it & it will be cheaper to slam it.
-
Try so lowered Kings XF 6cyl springs, about $90 from memory, last set I got.
-
It will be getting dropped before it goes, how far yet is open for discussion:(

A few more pics on photobucket http://s608.photobucket.com/albums/tt169/St_Marys_Prestige/Bas%20Final%20Fit%20Up/
Still need a few bits & pieces to finish it off, hopefully the wiring is sorted on Wedensday & it wont take long to finish it off.

Colour makes a difference on the cost per year, not much but it might sway your decission, like white on red is cheaper than the black n gold etc!

Well to throw a different spin on it.......when I first started looking for a stang I was going to do the Eleanor project too and yep u guessed it I bought the appropriate plates but yep never got to doing my project so now I have LYN-274 in Victorian plates.
Not sure whether to use these or sell.......
-
i wonder who would have those in NSW?!::
-
Probably some chick named Lyn, they have been on her Datto 200B since 1978:w

Bas,
caught up with Steve and the boys today and saw your beasty.
Doesn't really look like the car I last saw at your place :w
The boys have done a fantastic job on it. Even with a layer off dust on it it still looked great.
I haven't forgotton catching up with you yet. Just been a bit busy. Will be on your side of town later in the week.

dont count on it Bas,
I got to get an engine yet,
then after that sit on a boat for 4 to 5 weeks.
still gotta get me interior done and wheels on.
matt is doing a stellar job though,
parts always seem to hole us up eh lol
-
The car should be a runner by the end of today:a
Then we are waiting for the brake specialist to get back to us on weather they can get it in this arvo. If all goes to plan by the end of the week/early next week all that will be left is the trim. Not long now..

Hi Bas,
Lookin great.
What's happening with the wheels? Got some eleanor ones coming?
(If this is in the thread already - apologies - would take 2 hours to find)
-
;].......none coming.
Budgets' a bit stretched at the moment.
Those wheels will have to do until I can sell them and buy the eleanor ones.
-
Bas, any luck with number plates?
-
Nope :_:[
hehehe....last thing to worry about right now.
Getting the car finished before my birthday is the first priority.
Paying for it........:-
Getting the right wheels
O and lets not forget getting rego.

I'm very confident with Steves' ability to finish it off before October 6th!!!
I'm sure he wants it outta there so he can get stuck on Ashs' project....plus he's got a few other ones waitin in line.
-
We should be right Bas, the only thing now out of our control is the brakes & any parts we need. The brake man is a legend & wont let us down so that wont be a problem. I should have a list of all the final bits & bobs needed to finish it by tommorow (Wendy should be back I Hope, I hate being the office girl) Got the seats back today, & the trimmer will come down & fit the carpet once we have tidied up the electricians work.
-
;x......photos? na don't worry, i know ur flat out.
Leave it till u've got more time.
-
Bas,
I love the Eleanor wheels but your wheels don't look too shabby - I'd spend money on other things(Motor etc) before the wheels.Great to see you getting so close. My kids reckon I've spent more time getting things done than driving my car so I know how you're feeling.
Bob
-
There is a couple more pics in your final fit up album, the front springs are out & getting reset, 4" lower than what they are now. I also took a couple of wiring pics, as you will see we have a bit of tidying up still to do.

It's too late now but the trimmer has put the Deluxe chrome on wrong. They should be verticle on a 67.
-
ye I noticed that....;]
Hopefully he can fix it, or he'll have to buy me a new set of interior....:+
-
Don't think so cause the trim has 2 pins that hold it on, so you will see the hole, Plastic repair maybe?
-
;]..

Just got off the phone from the trimmer, it will be fixed. Bit of a stuff up but at least they will rectify it.

She's been thrown outside for misbehaving!!
She might end up in raw metal from the sand blasting she's received overnight........:w:w
Na.....i think she's at the brake specialist.......having a 'wife'(hand-brake) installed
-
Whats the deal with the housing around the headlights?
They look small for that area??
-
Its off getting the brakes sorted.
It has five & three qtr inch headlamps. With that Eleanor apron panel the standard 7" headlamps dont work.

DaMn these guys are good.......you can't fool a forum member! lol.

Wedding days, your kidding right. Cars are way better and way cheaper. I reckon my wedding day cost me about $600k + all up at least. Nearly done now though;2:2 Cars seldom give you trouble if you build them right women, well that's another story:-
-
ye shaunp, i was being sarcastic.........actually this has cost me triple what my wedding day cost......we eloped to Cook Islands,,,,,,it was just us two and the Raratonga string band......:+........no filming just plenty of photos.
-
Bas the wedding day is just the start of the cost, until you get rid of them. I could have had a few real GT500s in hind site.
-
Got the car back from getting the brakes done, now we are back in business. A couple of pics on photo bucket. Bas Final Fit Up album. I will get a few more in a couple of hours.

Go-Mummy-Go ??!?!!
WTF ?
Cheers,
Frank.
-
I'll be puttin a lot on, but at this stage its just trying to find someone in Sydney that will do a blue-slip without any hassles.
67-er whats with da GO-Mummy and Daddy-Go ??!?!?!
Surely the only one that would sell is the Go-Baby-Go....maybe the BURN-BABY-BURN, but the rest ;3
-
Those gearknobs remind me when I had my AC Cobra replica - the 1st time I took my wife for a spin - was on the westgate fwy here and I gave it a bootful coming onto an on-ramp. She turned to me with a terrified look on her face and said 'Frank , Frank ... what's that burning smell ??!!'.
I had a grin ear-to-ear and just turned and said 'Rubber, Baby , Rubber ...'.
I just had the paxton fitted with still had the skinny tyres on the back for the roadworthy and left a cloud of smoke about 100 ft long.
Not something I would do in broad daylight today I dont think.
Cheers,
Frank.
-
Steve
Casper is on its way mate;2;2;2;2
comin along nicely Bas..you must be stoked...steve and his fellas have done an exeptional job and Im sure steve has put a lot of his own heart into this project
Good work steve
-
........ye don't forget to mention the many parts that he threw in too.:(
Hoping to pick it up this Friday for Blue-slip......cannnnn't wait, don't know where my patience has gone?!
-
Well done Stanglover, not too long now...
Hope to see you around if yer in Syd!!!
Good blue slip place is in Campbelltown if you're interested.
They passed mine no probs. All done in 20 mins.
Cheers
-
Thanks 67coupe,
I've got a place now booked in for Friday arvo, hopefully they won't give me any grief.
What paper work did you have to provide?
-
Sorry, did you have an engine number on your car already? if not, was that an issue with the blue slip guys?
-
I had no real issues as they do mustangs all the time.
I had an engine number stamped by the fellas that restored the car for me. They just used the VIN for that...
Paper work you need:
Import approval papers showing your cars VIN
Weight bridge ticket
Bill of sale (not 100% if you need this for the blue slip, just bring it along anyways).
Don't know if you need any engineering cert for the work done... maybe the other fellas on the forum can help?
I know i didn't as it was mainly cosmetic work, nothing major, and its still lhd... so you should be ok.
I think thats it off the top of my head. Fairly straight forward.
hope it helps!!
-
Gave the lens a bit of a clean, there is more of the bucket page.
-
Definately helps :(
Did you need the weigh bridge ticket BEFORE you took it to blue slip?....i think you only need that when you go to RTA.
I don't have my engine stamped so I hope that ain't gonna be another hold up.:-
-
;x;x;x;x;x;z.......;2
Speechless.......
-
Yeah I think you definitely need it before the blue slip.
Theres a weight declaration section on the form that they fill out when doing the blue slip inspection.
Just get it outta the way, took me 5 mins, and 27bucks!
-
Damn guys that looks staunch! Great work!
-
Worth the wait Bas?????? :+
Congrats mate and thoroughly deserved. Go out and enjoy it.
Well done Steve and crew on another fantastically presented vehicle.
U guys r a credit to your industry. :(
-
Still a couple of final hurdles to jump before its finished. Always a few gremlins come to light when its almost over the line. Next lot of Pics will be hopefully on Friday with Bas sitting in it.
-
I'd like to see pics of Bas sitting in it, whether it's finished or not!!!
-
I think we can make that happen mo. Hopefully it will be finished but it needs to be right before it leaves. Just a few little mechanical issues to iron out.
-
Hi Bas,
You will need an engine number (Mustangs often used the last 5 numbers in the VIN if you're going to create one), otherwise the Police issue one I think (which may take some time)? Or a Blue Slip guy who may have imagined the engine number and happened to write it on the form!
Cheers Bee
-
Hmmm.....just called the mechanic who does blue slips for older cars all the time.....
Told me all I need is the paper work, no need for engine number .........
He says, just bring the paper work, that's all I need.
might just get the weigh bridge thing done anyway b4 it goes to blue slip, just incase.
If it needs an engine number, then maybe the mechanic can get it organised for me.
Lets see how long this process stretches out to.....:[
Atleast I get to drive it from Steves' to the mechanic.........:a
-
Where is the engine number supposed to be located. Might need to double check & see if the last 5 digits of the vin stamped on there have somehow been overlooked::
-
Stamp it on top of the blockat the rear, just behind the inlet manifold.
-
any updates Bas?
-
:_ couple of little issues to iron out....should be ready by early next week.
-
bugger, sooooo close....
-
Bas,
Congrats, Ive havent been on this site lately. What a transformation.
Of course its raining the week its finished....
Might see you around the southern streets of Sydney...

-
Hey James, yep, its the final countdown......but its killin me more than having to wait a whole year!

Ladies & gentlemen the resto is complete, well stage one anyway. The powerplant is a job for another time.
The beast now has rego & will be terrorising the streets of Sydney tommorow night. I havent posted pics yet as I said the next ones would be with Bas sitting in it. When he came for a look the other week I forgot to take any. Tommorow when he picks it up I will be camera in hand. I believe it will be going to a show & shine on Sunday for any Sydneysiders that want to check it out in the flesh. Bas can advise of the location as I cant remember where it was. Stay tuned:(

Drum roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bas, I am sure i speak for the majority of "the brotherhood" in saying WOOOOOHOOOOO!
We are all hanging to see the pics of you laying a decent licorice strips out of Steves driveway!
Over the last few Months we have all followed the ups and downs of the build with great interest.
I just came in from the shed after spending a couple of hours tinkering with my coupe (and debating which way to jump with my fastback).
Your posts have been an inspiration to lots of us that have been toiling away with our pony's.
They say nothing good is easy ( I am sure Steve would attest to that!)
Great work to you, Steve and all that have had input into bringing this project to fruition:(:(:(:(:(
-
Congrats Baz,
Steve & the guys have done another fanastic job.
Baz, don't forget the video camera as I know J1 will want to see footage.
J1 in still in Melb. until early week & then he's off again.
And of course everyone down in Mexico want to see & hear the end result.
Cheers, :(

Well done.
I want to drive down and go for a spin baz! Back seat will be fine! Just want to be part of the buzz and see the car in the flesh
-
Hey guys!
Thank you all for the kind words.....again all kind words should go towards Steve for being not only an amazing restorer but a true gentleman!
Steve THANK YOU! again for everything and I can't wait to see your Hellanor on the road.

Congratulations Bas,
The car looks fantastic and you should be applauded for your perserverance - a lesser man would have given up a long time ago.

Glad to have been a small part of the journey way back when it 1st started, literally.
Is Jacob happy to have his car back ???
Hopefully catch up in the new year with my car and have a cruise, legally this time unlike your 1st time :w
Cheers

-
J1! the phantom!
Great to hear from ya mate.....myself and the car are old news now, its somewhat sad that the rebuild has finished and its out of Steve's garage. It almost feels like it belongs there not in my garage.
Still stuff to do, like the engine and gearbox, and little stuff like a streo etc...but on the whole, I'm over the moon with it.
Got the baby seats put in properly by a professional and had our first FAMILY cruise the other weekend. My wife couldn't understand what all the other drivers were fussing about when they drove past us :w.....its like "Love, do you know you're cruizin in a mustang?"...
i guess some people will never get it, but the kids absolutely loved it, so much so that the little one fell asleep in it!!:+
-
You can drop it back if you want Bas, I am sure Simon will take care of it for you. Glad you got the baby bolts sorted properly:(

That interior is smicko Basman. They look like proscat seats (i think that is the right brand) where did you get it done and how much?
-
Hmmm...I think you may be referring to the photos in the photobucket album?!?! the seats with the headrests on them and racing belts?? that's not my car, but is my dream upgrade one day.
Click on the video above and you'll see my interior....still should look smicko! lol... Steve the legend organised the whole interior.....parts were from Capital Classics in Can-berra
-
You are correct. Still yours is smicko as well. Little fella looked comfy.

The young fella looks like he is getting ready to take over the driving duties
