Title: Recommendation for tuning workshop (pref East side of Melbourne)
Post by: McBrain on June 16, 2022, 11:58:12 am
I think I have almost exhausted my mechanical skills/time in sorting the tuning issue with my FE390 (running rich on one bank, black plugs leading to poor running, etc).

Might be time to get an expert to sort it out once and for all. Someone who knows these engines and can isolate the problem (timing/valves/carb/intake).

Any recommendations in Melbourne. Someone I can trust my car with?

Sorry can’t help with a mechanic but what I can say is most mechanics can’t spell carburettor and happy to spend your money learning. I had a problem with a quadrajet on my corvette and couldn’t work out what was going on. So I bought a air fuel mixture gauge and it all made sense. From there able to fix the problem

Haven't needed to use them but this place has a good rep. I know of one 428 CJ engine they rebuilt and the owner is very pleased with their work.

Yes, this is usually my approach. I enjoy learning and the satisfaction of doing it myself. I do all my own work. It's just that this issue has been festering a while and I'm currently time-poor.

Ideally I'd like to both pay someone AND get the benefit from learning from their expertise! (Is that too much to ask nowadays?)

You could try Hallam Performance & Exhausts if they are near you - http://www.hallamperformance.com.au/ (http://www.hallamperformance.com.au/)

Another club member recommended them to me - lots of old school cars when I was there, and they impressed me with the repair I needed.

Thanks Shane,

Based on the website they seem to specialise in engine building. I'm near Box Hill but will go to Hallam and check them out.

Thanks John.

May I ask what you had done on your Mustang? (engine, drivetrain, body?)

I dropped in to the address on the website and Google in Halllam - they are not there anymore. It's a truck place now.

How did you go finding someone in the Eastern Suburbs? I'm in a similar situation. I do most things myself but would love someone to give the car a look over and tune. Running pretty well but terrible raw fuel smell at times.

I can recommend Darren Plier Automotive in Moorabbin. Not far from Petes Garage but Pete generally has a three month wait
