My 69 currently has disk brakes already - i think they off an XB falcon.
But they are spongy and i want better stopping power with the engine running 420hp now.
I'm checking if anyone has upgraded to modern 4 or 6 pot disk brakes?
What brand should i check out?
I see that the brand Wilwood (images below) have a set of 4 pot brakes for 69 mustang. Is anyone using these?
Will i need to upgrade the master cylinder?
I have 15in magnum 500s that they will need to fit.
thanks

I have Baers on my car which has similar HP to yours and they stop great but I'm running 17" wheels.

Pretty sure you will at least need to change the booster to give more pressure.

i would get the bigger wilwood discs and also the thicker ones an use their radial calipers.
put 2 lb residual valves in the lines

I thought residual valves were only used if the master cylinder was mounted below the calipers?

ok i will ask about that. they will need to still fit in 15inch so not sure how large disk i can ask for

Does your mustang do track work ? Or just street driving
-
Are you using a booster now and If so what brake pedal are you using?
-
The Falcon ones shouldn't be spongy there is something wrong. Are they on the right sides? they are left and right handed you know. if they a back to front you cant get the air out of them.

On my last Mach 1 I fitted new DBA rotors ,new XF falcon alloy calipers , top of the range Q F M brake pads and most important new brake rubber lines . Worked great for high performance street driving . Track conditions will be another story . You need the rears adjusted correctly also .

Rowan,
I am home this weekend if you want drop around and l will check your brakes for you.
Your set up from memory did not look to bad it may be something relevantly easy to fix.

Also you may want to look at this link
http://www.mcdonaldbrosracing.com.au/streetrearbrake.html
http://www.mcdonaldbrosracing.com.au/streetfrontbrake.html
They are open on Saturday.
Does the kit you are looking at meet Australian ADR? Have read somewhere in the past that US spec Wilwood kits need to be engineered for use in Australia.

yes i read that also, but i thought it was just making sure they included the dust boots. there is one specific package they do which meets ADR.
those 2 packages you linked look perfect.

Summit racing do a rear disc kit for about $500 I think. Boofhead had them on his 65 FB, or you can use Falcon rears from AU etc , you need to make a spacer to center the caliper with the falcons.
You may find depending on what falcon calipers you have EBC may have pads, 69 Mustang brakes are pretty much the same as Falcon brakes. Girloc made the falcon calipers here under license from KH so basically what and XY GT would have had

They were sold as a summit racing brand through I new beforehand they were an SSBC kit - just less expensive. It was the same kit worked well.

Nope.

ok i will ask about that. they will need to still fit in 15inch so not sure how large disk i can ask for
go to their online site . they have the info there but its confusing . they do have a slightly larger disc that will for 15" rims.

I wouldn't get the cheaper wilwoods. Discs are far too thin. You'd be better off with what you have now. I doubt you'd notice much of a difference on the street with your brakes if they were functioning correctly. If you want bigger brakes for the heck of it or you are going to do track work different story, if I had the money I'd do it too, I love big brakes.
The problem with doing brake conversions, is unless you match everything up, you can end up with shitty brakes, no matter the components. A 6 piston brembo kit can brake like crap if you have the wrong master cylinder, crappy pads, wrong front/rear bias etc.
Did you do the brake conversion you have now? What pads do you have? The braking between crappy pads and good pads is pretty significant. Are you brake lines new? How old is the fluid? What is the master cylinder?
Don't get me wrong, if you have the money and don't care about spending it, I'd ditch your setup in favor of some bigger brakes(as big as you can fit). But you'll need to match it up with the correct master cylinder bore and the correct front/rear bias.
Just remember, bigger brakes tend shine once they get some heat in them, which won't happen much on the street.
