Title: 1967 GTA 390 Mustang Harmonic balancer pulley's
Post by: Tiny on November 19, 2022, 02:47:39 pm
Hi, I have an issue which I am having trouble sorting out.  I have a GTA FE 390 with a single groove harmonic balancer (HB) (C4AE-6316-B). I have added power steering to the vehicle so I have purchased a 3 Groove pulley (C5AE-D) which bolts on to the HB.  This pulley actually has the ignition timing marks on the pully.  The pulley is larger in circumference than the HB and fits over the groove single groove in the HB.

My issue is that given the 3 groove bolt on pulley is larger in diameter, when I put the fan belt on the belt is almost touch the water pump outlet and hose.  It just misses but given that there may be some flex it may rub against the water pump and hose.
The other issue is that fitting the power steering belt causes the fan belt to rub significantly on the lower radiator hose.  I do have an after market large radiator so it maybe the configuration of the new radiator that is different to the original radiator and the hose may be fitted differently on the original.

After all that my question is can anyone tell me if there is a single groove bolt on pulley to my current HB.  Can you tell me what the Fomoco number should be.  There are so many out there it is so confusing.  I bought a single groove pulley the other day but the 3 bolt pattern is different. ($85 down the drain)

Cheers

I have several FE crank pulleys - where are you based?

Ah - I’m no longer in Melbourne.
So, can you send pics and measurements of what you have so I can compare? I think I have a spare ‘68/69 428CJ crank pulley and some off other FE’s.

I’ll need to check.

Hi, Jiffy please find attached the image of my Harmonic Balancer and the measurements.  As you can see its a single groove, so hopefully you have the single groove bolt on pulley for the power steering.
cheers

Use the single groove HB and a 2 groove water pump pulley.

I thought about that.  Will driving the power steering pump direct from the water pump pulley put to much strain on the water pump?

No, it's sorta balanced by the PS. Works for a non smog, no A/C, P/S car. Use P/S pulley marked AC
If you wanna use dual alt pulley, use the bolt on single groove H/B pulley, C1AE-6A301-B.

Well that sounds too easy.  All this time I have been chasing a pulley for the Harmonic Balancer.
Excellent, thanks very much

ok - I think I have a pulley that will help. I looked last night but I didn't get a photo. Sheave on the pulley is the same size as your existing crank sheave - but this pulley also has a 2nd sheave that extends forwards a little, will get a pic tonight
