Title: My 1966 GT350H Tribute build project
Post by: 66 Hertz on March 28, 2011, 09:48:23 am
As some of you would be aware for some time know I have been planning to build a new car........
My dream Mustang was always the Black & Gold Shelby GT350H ( Hertz ). I can't afford a real one so a Replica has to be the next best thing. For those who don't know what they look like below is a picture of a genuine one currently for sale in the USA for $140000.00

About four months ago my wife & I decided bugger it we only live once why don't we sell the coupe & buy our dream car. I began searching all over the USA & here for a Hertz clone to buy but unfortunately most were either way to expensive or what I like to call SH*T & GLITTER .Hence I have decided the only way to get a car at the standards I can be happy with was to build my own, So since then I have been busy buying up all the parts required to build or convert a suitable donor car. Our spare room looks like a warehouse full of boxes of parts etc. All the time I have been trying to find a good donor car to start with......as you know the better you have to start with , the cheaper & better the build will end up. After looking around at quite a few cars all over OZ I soon realised that a cheap car was going to cost way more to restore then convert into a Hertz copy than to buy a good restored car. A fellow forum member in our club had the most amazing car for sale at a very fair price so we bought that one & now I am pleased to be able to say have started proper on our project.

I hope to be able to share this build along the way with you guys & gals so hope fully we can all enjoy the transformation of what was a truly great car to start with into  ( Hopefully ) an even greater example of the world famous Shelby Rent-a-Racer.

as the build come's along I will try to update shots regularly & keep everyone informed. I have only had the car a week but got a lot acheived over the weekend, I cut off the original brackets on the shock towers so I could fit the one piece export brace. Note couldn't wait had to put the rocker covers straight on:cool:

next big job is to cut out the rear quarter vent frame work to fit the windows in......
I hope you all enjoy watching along over the next few months:thumb:  Dale

Hi 66 EMBERGLO COUPE,

Looks like an extremely nice car to start with as a base for your 66 GT350H (and at least you know the history of the car...).

Good luck with the build and it'll be interesting to see the transformation.

Also, if you're after any additional Shelby part's, try contacting the guy's at Hills Mustangs and Classics in Sydney as they're an agent for Tony D. Branda.

Are you going to delete the rear seat?  Also, what colour are you going to paint it??
Title: My 1966 GT350H Tribute build project
Post by: 66 Hertz on March 28, 2011, 01:19:04 pm
No the rear seat will stay....it will be near identical to the Black & gold one shown. I already have a Concours award winning coupe which is now for sale ,so this one will be no different, it will be all original, just like Shelby built them in 66.

Have not touched it all week  but more parts have arrived now have wheels & bonnet. Not much more to go. Zipple cruise on tonight so this afternoon will be cleaning the Emberglo Coupe. Hopefully tommorow I will get the rear quater windors all cut out & tidied up...Will try to post some more pics soon.

Ps. My best mate of nine years pictured above had to be laid to rest three days after I took these photo's. Anyone who knows me will know Bella came to work with me everyday & I will sadly miss her.
RIP. Bella...............

I have admired emberglo from a distance since Ive been on the forum & what a quality example she is, so like many others I'm rubbing the hands together for the Racer tribute. Its also my favourite Mussy. Enjoy mate,

haven't done anything on the body this week but have been busy on the engine.
I have it stripped apart all  but the crank, rods & heads...............This engine was bored & had a full rebuild less than 2 thousand Km's ago.

I have installed a new Comp Cams camshaft & lifters fitted my original Shelby intake & 600 Holley.

I still have to refit the timing cover then fit the Cobra Alloy Sump.

Once it is all back together I have a set of Tri Y headers to fit should look & sound good.

I doubt it Rod.......... my first attempt. Mustang speedo is very basic & was real easy to do, If I can do it any one could. I guess you would need to just have a look at how the mechanism on the Statesman speedo works & go from there..

Post by: 66 Hertz on April 29, 2011, 10:44:55 am
yeah, mate.......the backs were relatively easy but the fronts are much more complicated & time consuming...I started on one of the fronts a week ago but haven't had time to finish it yet. You need to buy a pair of hog ring pliers & about three hundred hog rings & away you go. Firstly you need to remove all the old hog rings ( which is the hardest part ) then remove the old covers & reinstall in the new covers in the reverse order of how they came apart. My covers are TMI brand & seem to bo pretty good quality, I bought a Master Trim kit because I have to change blue trim to Black.

Antique Tyres in Victoria.
http://www.antiquetyres.com.au/ (http://www.antiquetyres.com.au/)

a  guy named Harry was very helpfull, reasonable costs. These were my second choice I really wanted Goodyear Polyglass tyres but got sick of being dicked around by the local dealer here, so his loss. I put these up against the coupe today & they really fill up the wheel arches  :thumb:

65 GT350's had the exhaust exiting in front of the rear wheels, they were renowned for their loud exhaust note. 66's had full length exhaust systems with the tailpipes exiting under the rear valance. I'm rather keen on the looks of the car grabbing your attention first rather the noise......dont need any unwanted attention from the boys in blue etc....:thumb:

Be careful on those tyres if they're cross plys. If you're used to radials, you'll be surprised at the lack of grip cross plys have compared to radials. I'm old enough to have driven on cross plys and I wouldn't go back to them, especially in the wet. Eddie

yes cheers Eddie youre right but I am not building it to hoon in, I will not likely drive it when its wet anyway. My coupe I have had for almost three years still has the original American water in the wiper water bag that it arrived here with...............never sqirted the wipers, not likely too either.:thumb:

but in saying that I still managed to clock up 10 thousand miles in that time.........so not too bad

Wish I had the balls to use them on my car. You're correct, they look so right on these cars. That's why B F Goodrich tyres have such a following, they're as close to the look of the old crossplys as you can get. Eddie

Hi Dale, This is a job we have been looking forward to completing.

We all had a real good close look over your car when it arrived this morning. Everybody agreed - this is an excellent car!

One of the first jobs was to remove the front and rear screens. We called our friends from Instant Windscreens in to remove them. Wanted to remove them very carefully to ensure no damage to screens or paint. They did a good job, but did find a lot of sealant had been used. Unfortunately, it was not possible to save the mouldings. Bugger. Good news is those flanges are in excellent condition -

Andy spent the day plug welding the old door mirror holes and also the holes from the old badges -

Hi Fellas, Yes... There will be lots of photos.

Here are a couple more -

Will take them on a daily basis and upload to a special photobucket album as well as putting a lot here on Dale`s thread

This is the link to the album -

http://s244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/rocket67/Dales%2066%20Fastback/ (http://s244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/rocket67/Dales%2066%20Fastback/)

Michael, hope you are also going to post up photos of your car as work progresses.

Hope Dale and yourself drop in regularly to check out progress on the car.

Andy has now finished the plug welding and filling of the repaired areas -

He is now sanding down the entire body with 120 frecut. This is to remove the clearcoat and flatten the paint ready for primer -

This is a very labour intensive part of the job which must be undertaken with great care to remove all the clearcoat and sand well enough to flatten the paint, but not go all the way through to metal, as the old paint was in excellent condition and therefore will provide a very good base for the new paint.

Dale, u must be pretty excited right now !

Hi Michael, I think the original colour of this car is the silver blue.

The green areas are primer under the paint. Like this -

You will notice on Dale`s car the green primer you see is mostly where Andy has "feathered" the areas around the repairs to smooth the surface.

Once Andy is happy with the sanding, the car will be taped up and have more primer sprayed ready for "blocking" the surface to make it all nice and straight.

Mor progress pics - Andy has now finished the initial sanding of the old paint.

Today he also removed the bonnet, guards and bootlid, which will be painted off the car -

He spent this afternoon masking up the car ready for primer to be sprayed on monday -

He had to be extremely careful with the taping of the car. Dale`s excellent prep work under the car, the engine bay and inside the car must not have any overspray.

Andy sprayed 3 coats of a special mix primer on the Fastback today. Although it is Hi-Build primer, because he found the body to be straight whilst sanding, he decided to thin out the primer in order to avoid having the normal thick coating for blocking back. This body requires only minimal blocking.

After inspecting the body after the primer had dried for a couple of hours, i could only agree with Andy - this body is straight.  Here are the latest photos -

The primer will be given a couple of days to dry in case there is any shrink back. in the meantime we will prepare those little bits and pieces for paint -

Hi pone65, The Mach1 does not have any glass fitted as yet, and the body is well protected from overspray with many layers of dust.

But i will give the Mach1 a 4 stage Autopian Polish with my trusty Flex polishing machine and Menzerna polishes when it is all finished -

That paint will be smoother than a baby`s bum. No worries.

Hey Dale, I take it from the post by pone65 that you have just become a Grandfather? If so - Congratulations to you and yours.

There is no need to worry about the wheels off the car. there is NO overspray on them. They are well protected in bubble wrap -

Andy has been working on the bits and pieces -

A minor repair was required inside the lip of the bootlid -

He is also working on the inside of the bonnet -

Guide coats have been sprayed onto the body ready for final rubbing -

Top coats should be sprayed next week.

Stiiiiiiiiiillllll Rubbing.

Thought Andy would be giving the Fastback a final wetrub today. Wrong! He decided it still needed a final blocking back.

This is the tedious stage where it seems to be never ending.

He loosely fitted the front guards to complete the blocking back of the body

This all means yet another light coat of primer tomorrow, then wait for it to dry before the final wetrub - hopefully.
He is a fussy bugger, which really is a very good thing for the finished job. Sometimes feel like putting a cracker up his clacker, but we know the end result is worth having some patience.

More photos coming midweek.

As Jeremy wrote - we are very short staffed due to winter ills and do not have time to scratch ourselves.

Andy started on the stripes on Friday. The car is taped up ready for spraying, but he had difficulty trying to get some warmth onto the panels to be able to paint the stripes.

But as Dale wrote - the car is coming up a treat.

This one sold yesterday as the Motor Show Shannons Auction for $36k. It looked ok from 10 feet away, and despite a few small issues it was to come with a Roadworthy Certificate.

Yep... It is an absolute stunner!

Dale gave a bit of a clue about how it is being done when he wrote that Andy had wet rubbed the car with 1200 grit. This was done so that he could clearcoat the body and panels again after spraying the stripes. I call it sweet reflections -

Yes Dale, Andy went home a very happy and satisfied person today.

He had spent most of the week polishing the car. Firstly with his favoured Farecla compound, followed by a 3 stage Mernzerna polish - commonly called an Autopian Polish. Each stage being finer than the last. That paint is smooth as glass. There is no apparent join where the stripes meet the black paint. It is sensational.

Here are a couple more pics -

Maintaining that beautiful paint is going to be the hard part for you. Black is known as a hard colour to look after as it shows every spec of dirt.

You probably know how to look after your cars exterior finish.

Would recommend a Waffle Weave Drying Towel, some high quality Microfiber cloths, and a good Car Wash Shampoo. I use a lot of Chemguys products to clean my cars. Their Car Wash shampoo is called Citrus Wash and Gloss which is excellent stuff as well as their Jetseal109 Sealant.

Just leaves the GT350H gold vinyl side stripes to be applied, door handles & locks etc, door windows to be reassembled, rubber seals around the door frames & boot etc........& the track rod brackets to be welded on underneath the car.

After what seems like a ridiculous two & a half days it is almost finished..............I haven't started it up, have to buy some fuel tomorrow. Almost everything is back together & working except the last of the interior trim around the rear quarter windows & the windows themselves.....the car is absolutely filthy cant wait to wash it & polish her all up & get it tidy again. Got a small issue with the Monte Carlo bar not fitting but will have that fixed tomorrow also...............really just need to start it up & make sure its all okay, finish the rear quarter windows then later on after I have had a rest , fit the disc brakes.

Hope you have a car bra for it before you head over to Melbourne, I swear by them have one for each car, however with black be extra careful and put plenty polish on near stripes etc, the dust under the bra is the biggest issue. On my black car I have a flanelette sheet under it for added protetion.
A guy I know with a GTHO clamps mudflaps on for travelling, bought aluminium window locks (thumb screw fit) from hardware store.
Just a thought

Thank you Brian for your offer..............I have considered the Car Bra idea but not made my mind up yet. If I got a couple of small chips on the front , its not the end of the world but if the Bra chaffs all the front end from dust getting under it is of much more concern, Never had one , never used one, don't know anyone who has one so I still need some convincing that it is good.:thumb:

I have been in touch with Car Bra Aust & they will make me a matching Black & gold one to suit the car.

ps. Going to start it up tonight, fingers crossed I put it all back together correctly:thud:

Last night I put a Jerry can full of fuel in it...............sat in the drivers seat nervously pondering what might happen. We had a big fan in front of the radiator for cooling. Finally manned up and turned the key. After about 5 seconds of cranking & pumping on the pedal it started straight up. I ran it according to Comp Cams instructions which was to take it straight to 2500rpm for 30 mins, that seemed like torture but after 1/2 hour I slowed the idle down to around 700 rpm & all looked & sounded right. No leaks anywhere all was good, now I will put my Tri Y headers on & my manual advance correct distributor :thumb:...:burnout:..:thumb:

I modified & fitted the Monte carlo bar last night also. Just got a few small minor issues to attend to, rear quarter windows still to finish but the end is in sight. It will be good to wash it & detail it , get it out of the driveway & into the sunlight for some photos.

I spent a few extra bucks and bought myself a beautifully restored car, so all I really had to do was strip it apart, have it repainted & reassemble it with all the new Black trim etc..............I was able to prepare a fair bit for the reassembly whilst Jeremy had the car.......the extra bucks spent on the donor car pays off in the long run as it is cheaper & quicker............Hopefully by the weekend our weather will clear up a bit and I will have it all finished & be able to take it out of the driveway into the sunlight & take a few decent shots of it to post.....cheers Dale

the car looks great, a real credit to you.

I bought a bra from Car Bra when I first had the car painted 12 years ago. We have travelled to Qld, Sydney twice, Adelaide twice, numerous trips within Victoria and nearly always have the bra on. It is a good fit, and has a good layer of soft material inside. They have had a build specifically for the type of car. Our paint is 2 pak and has not shown any scuff marks in all the time it has been used.

I also use one on my daily driver for interstate trips. we have had it for 7 years and again I would highly recommend even with the standard of paint on modern cars.

The Tacho ............I opted for the cheaper of the two & made it fit the original bracket without much effort. I got it I think from Tony D Branda Performance, who were great guys to deal with.

Hi 66 EMBERGLO COUPE,

I've posted a couple of comments throughout the stages and I must say congratulations to all that were involved in the build-up of your 'dream'.

One area of the car that looks absolutely awsome (including everything else...), you can't beat the look of the Firestone Wide Oval tyres on a Hertz Magnum 500 rim...Timeless!...:thumb:

Cheers,

THANKS GUYS. :thumb:........I have enjoyed sharing my build with everyone & would like to encourage others to do likewise. Its good to be able to share it from inception to the final result & get all sorts of great comments & encouragement along the way. Today see's my TRI Y headers being fitted, then I need to fit the new Disc Brake front end & it is finished............If the weather is good over the weekend I will try to video it running etc & chuck it on Youtube & link it here.

Never done the Youtube thing but I am sure it can't be to hard to figure out.

Awesome Buddy...........I drive it every weekend. I have clocked up I think about 470 miles now with no real issues.

Since I last posted anything about it I have been constantly tinkering trying to get everything right. I have now installed the correct full mechanical distributor , which made a big difference to it running smoother. Sorted out a few rattles here & there. This weekend may see the front disc brakes go on...then it is about finished completely...Oh I have a new fuel tank sender unit on the way which I will need to chuck in. October is starting to look abit sketchy at the moment......We have a family member terminally ill & definate plans are awkward.......Paid for the hotel & Show n Shine etc so fingers crossed he holds in there a bit longer..:thumb:

Yes mate it is a standard Shelby distributor which is a Twin point full mechanical one as used in the day.

Over the weekend I fitted my disc brake front end..........all went well, I had to make one new pipe from the master cylinder to the juntion block ( l/h- r/h & rear pipe Joiner )...had different size nipples from the new to the old one. Brakes work great, (manual non power assist )...you can see the master cylinder I used .

After all of the meticulous work that Dale and Mary put into this car, they were well rewarded for their efforts by taking out the award for "Best Restoration "in the Show and Shine section at the Dandenong Mustang Show yesterday.

If anybody saw the quality of cars on display yesterday, you would know it was not an easy task for the judges.

Top job Dale and Mary. Managed to catch up with them on the way back to Adelaide and took a couple of photos. Here are the proud owners with car and trophy -

Dale also insisted on a photo with Jeremy - owner of Image Classic Cars who did the panel and paint job on the car -

Soooo nice. Well done. My favourite is the hertz as well. LOVE that Black/Gold colour way.

Been looking for a stang for a couple months now, spotted a GT350H replica on carsales, only
a suburb away from me in Melb, for 60K, went to enquire later in the day and it had sold. Only
other one around is the Original for $165K... $100K over my budget unfortunately.

Great thread, and congrats on the build!

My car might be a tribute and will never ever be a real Hertz, but being the ever fussy one. I am always trying to improve on what I have to make it even more correct. I just got a new carb for it. Holley have reissued the correct carb for the 66 Shelbys, it is a 715cfm Lemans carb....take a look.

Title: Re: My 1966 GT350H Tribute build project

Pete these carbs have whats called LeMans bowls.............They incorporate a centre pivot float mechanism instead of the float being mounted across ways like a conventional carb. I believe this to have been designed to help eliminate fuel surge whist cornering at high speed on the early GT350 race cars.

interesting, Shelby went to a lot of trouble no to mention expense to solve his fuel surge problems, All you need now is a shelby data plate and you'll be set.....

I have decided to build a new engine for my car, I am in no big hurry to get it done. Maybe swap it out over winter when it is not being driven so much. I will most likely continue this thread highlighting my build up of the new mill. The current engine is a standard 66 engine with all the Shelby bits hung on it, my new one I am trying to reprodce the correct engine look & sound including the solid lifter sound of the original Shelbys. Block is at the engine reconditioners being honed and having the cam bearings replaced.........should be back tomorrow!
I am porting my own heads for a bit more extra grunt, being an internal thing that is out of sight I thought why not......one heads is about 2/3rds done, owing me at least ten hours so far. Will post some pics of the heads soon.... :thumb:

still many hours of work to do on the heads....haven't got one port finished completely yet!
once they are all done I will send them out to have the seats & guides replaced for unleaded fuel etc. Will probably even fit some screw in studs for the rockers

Have one of my heads pretty much finished ready to go off and have the seats replaced with ULP suitable ones. I will probably have screw in studs fitted whilst I am at it.

How's your hearing going? Still got that buzzing sound going on in there?

I can see you've spent a lot of time in there tooling around. Good to see the halfway mark  :thumb:

I'm just as bad, I can never hear what anyone says normally. And after a day on the air tools, even with hearing protection, my wife and kids soon get quite frustrated with repeating themselves and how loud I have the TV.

Are you using many carbide bits? If so, which have you found most useful? I have a few I use on timber but at the $ they are each, its hard to take a stab at which one to buy next.

these are my weapons of choice Ash.

the long shaft has a slit in the end which I wrap emery tape around & goes down deep into each port.

Hey mate good luck with your build, I've got a GT350H tribute myself running a 289 with a Paxton supercharger. E2 Eleanor front end makes it look a bit different to the others...hoping to be on the road in the next few weeks after some work! Cheers!

Start a thread on it in the members cars section, would be good to read about it and see some pics.

Hi Dale

I Think I should just send you my glove box lid and let you do the magic I really believe I can really mess it up.I am great with spanners but go batshit crazy with the finer detail.
Tell me how much and we will get it all happening.Your postal address would be an advantage as well.I am not a crook I am doing what you did.Dynacorm will have a new shell available soon which I want to take advantage of.

Hi Dale

Yeah would love the stencil for my car but I think it is not correct to place Carrolls name on the car.Mine will always be a Restomod not a Replica. You have built a legend GT350H Replica,I don't have that in me I think.I hope in the coming months or years we can catch up with my shine and shite tribute and have a photo or two.Going to repower with an Edelbrock RPM 347 stroker (438 hp/415 ft/lb ) going to be busy with the 5 speed box and 3.5"s in the rear.Still have 4 wheel discs to slow her up.

Take care

Derek

just thought I might add a few new pictures of my car, it is slowly improving all the time into a nice car (http://s731.photobucket.com/user/ozzyone_photos/media/66%20GT350H/IMG_0562_zpsvryblhta.jpg.html)

my new favorite shots are from last Saturday at the 2015 Mustang Nationals, Saturday morning cruise being parked alongside Peter Hall's all original GT350H, what a pleasure to have had the opportunity to do so and compare it to the real deal.  :thumb:

thanks mate, I have bought more bits for it this week and have ordered some other goodies for under the bonnet. more correct stuff. Had a few guys point out a few little things that weren't quite correct so I am sorting those little things out. Thinking of ditching the console and putting a original shifter back in, in place of the Hurst one it has now.
