Hi All,
I'm about to pull my 289W to undergo a complete rebuild and was wondering whether it is easier to just pull the engine on its own or engine and tranny together?
The transmission (Auto) was rebuilt completely approx 2 years ago and is working perfectly so no real reason to take it out if I don't need to.
I plan on doing this myself with the appropriate engine hoist and leveler.

After reading your post I would remove the engine by itself paying attention to the torque converter.
I mean make sure it stays in the bell housing on removal.

Definitely easier without the trans, even with a leveller, bit more fiddle to get under and unbolt the trans etc, but it comes down to how patient you are, and if you are not to precious about a few scratches in your engine bay leave the trans on.
And if it is getting a full rebuild, pull as much stuff off the front of the engine as possible, fan, pulleys, pumps etc, just gives you a bit more room to play with...,

Way easier to pull it as an assembly and split it out of the car.

i always leave the trans in the car unless it needs rebuilding also.
you need the correct hoist with a long arm and legs that are at least 12 inches longer than the arm when the arm is fully extended to remove the engine with the trans SAFELY, otherwise the hoist can tip forward from the weight, and those hoists may be very hard to find at a rental yard, plus having a friend help no matter which way you do it is useful.

Appreciate everyone's advice. Looks like I'll go with just the engine since the transmission has been rebuilt recently.
