Adjusting Park on late 67 Wipers.
« on: February 14, 2010, 05:23:02 pm »
A question to all the professionals out there, the wiper motor on my 67 will not park?
The workshop manual describes adjusting the points. However out of  the two wiper motors I have, neither have the screw adjuster described in words and pictures in the owners manual.

What they have is a set of points controlled by a nylon shaft protuding out of the gearbox.

Do any of you have any answers and methods of adjustment please.

Regards,

Here's a couple of things to try:
Do you have stock 67 wiring?
Are you using the foot pump?
Do you have a constant 12volts at the red wire when the ignition is turned on?

Lance.
Do you have the washer pedal wiring connected, previous threads relating to Mustangnuts wiper issue highlighted park issues if the washer wiring was left unattached. Just a thought.
Cheers.

Justang,

All the wiring is fine, new and correct. The washers work well.

The actual wipers work great both speeds except they will not park.

Can`t remember which makes but have struck older wiper systems where wiper switch needs good earth on it`s mounting through dash to complete self-park circuit. Is switch tight or hole too well painted? It`s a far out idea , I know :)

I think you may have to view a 67 wiring schematic & compare to the loom you have. I am sure you have a power (edit; actually a ground now that I think about it) wire connecting the space on the gear that has the blank spot. The gear is what connects the power through to the motor. I can sort it when I get back (hopefully the 28th of this month). I have packed a few extra wiper motors, so pulling one down for a look see without dismantling your car is a good option.

So when electrics confuse the c- -p out of you go back to basic mechanics,

A thorough clean of the points, brushes and armature, then see that 40  plus years of use the old lubrication has gelled and is holding the pushrod in place that normally transfers the points from contact to contact.

hey presto the wipers park, 'who's a clever boy then'

Cheers
Lance

P.s at least I knew all the electrical was correct before I started.

My 66 wipers did not park when I got the car. After weeks of research I found the answer.
the wiper switch has two sets of contacts, normally closed  and  open.
switched volts from the open switch to motor , constant non switched volt to motor . one side of the closed contact goes to
chassis ,ground, and the other to the right lug of the motor.
the wipers then park when the motor is grounded after the switch is turned off via the cam inside the motor ssembly
This is how most wipers work in any car.

So you put a 43 year old wiper motor back in a car, that has every detail either rebuilt or modified, without at least cleaning it???? :_

And then you call youself a "clever boy" ??? :w :w :w
