On the trade plates, if you are the registered owner of the plates that's cool, but it's an offence in Vic to use borrowed trade plates. I think the person who gets in the doodoo is the lender, rather than the borrower.

Just so you can decide which way to go, plates or permit, and no worries.

With a few of us we should be able to get a fair bit done in a day or two,  Unreg permit is the way to go, you can get it online from Vic Roads

Looks like you have to ring them 131171, Its about $50 for a 28 day permit, the 7 day permit should be a bit cheaper

Given that I will be getting my car from exactly the same yard as you Rick and we will be on the same boat back to Tasmania as each other I'm sure my mate and I could lend a hand at least until Launceston.

Also Im sure there is legislation that covers unregistered vehicles being transported to a place of work for registration purposes in Vic as there is in Tasmania and NSW.  It must be the most direct route.

Cheers

I got a vic roads permit, think it was about 40 dollars, they allowed me to drive the car to a place of repair or on route for transit, the lady told me the route was of my choice and they only would get shirty if i was found way of route

No worries.

If you are going to be moving the car here and there under its own steam I would get the temp rego for the period you are over there.  You do have to specify the roads/route to be traveled.

I wont worry as I will be going from one Melb. wharf to the Spirit of Tas terminal and loading it there.

Then from Devonport to Launceston.  Then to vehicle inspection station and then to Transport Tasmania.

Cheers

I got told by service tas my car has to go through aus compliance before it can be regoed.
so to my local inspection station,
then to trasport inspector.
then back to inspection station then to service tas.
I even got told by one lady my car has to be right hand drive.

Thats right, but it is just a id check, they just check to see that the numbers are there and not dodgy, i was with the inspectors for 10 mins, make sure your engine has a number, I had to get issued a number and big al engraved it for me

Its firstly to Authorised Inspection Station then to Transport Tasmania for Inspection in relation to a WOVR check then paperwork to Service Tas for rego.

well I wish they told me that,
cuz like I said the person on the phone told me I gotta take it to transport inspector to make sure it meets all our safety guidlines and standards. told me it takes 4 hours and they check everything.
which they knew what they were talking about.
see even this from transport website

Jesus it sounds complicated to register a stang in Tassie.  Here in Vic a mate of mine just regoed his LHD 68 Stang,  all he needed was a roadworthy certificate and his import docs and it took about 15 minutes at the local Vic Roads office
