I am looking at possibly moving to Australia in the next 2 years and I have a 1996 Mustang GT.  I am currently in Japan and the car is Japanese specs (speedometer/odometer in KM's) but it is still a left-hand drive.  My question: for the car to be road ready (everyday car), does Australian law require the car to be converted to right-hand drive or can I drive it as is?  Also, if it is required to convert, approximately how much does it cost to convert? I appreciate any help!

Steve

Steve,
you can drive left hand drivers in australia.  There is no requirement to convert the speedo however.
Depending on which state you move to, there may be requirements on lighting and seat belts.

Cheers

oops  sorry missed that!!

forget ALL i said!!!!   or what another 9 years!

There is however some rules for Personal Imports that allow you to get away with LHD.   I am not however conversant on what they are, or whether all states permit them.

It would help if we knew the destination state.

I have a 2007 model GT Convertible. It was converted in NZ and has full NZ compliance.

I'm thinking of moving to Queensland and would like to bring the car with me as I have never had so much fun since I got it in Nov 06. I'd hate to have to leave it behind!

Can anyone advise if the compliance from NZ is transferable?

Also, the prices shown for conversion to RH by Australian converters are in line with what it costs in NZ. It is a lot of money, but it is also a big job. Mine took 7 weeks and every time I went to look at progress there were 4-5 guys working on it!
I sent pictures post conversion to the US dealer I bought it from and he was amazed at how much trouble they went to.
If anyone is interested I can list some of the aspects of conversion most people don't even realise need to be done.

Don't know about the legalities of compliance between Oz and NZ but it would certainly be something a bit different on the road over here.
Late model cars are a bit of a rarity around here, they are about but are few and far between.
Where in Qld are you looking at relocating to?

Just looking at properties around Coolum on Sunshine Coast. I was there last week and made the 'big decision' to see if I can make it happen.
Thanks for answering me. I know there can't be too many newer Mustangs around the area, as I didn't see anthing in the current shape between Brisbane and Noosa the whole week!

From what I understand the only difference between the nz and aus is the seat beld and compliance plates. This shouldn't set you back more that about $1k

2007gt,
they are out there.
There is a 2005 around the corner from me at Chancellor Park,
about 30 mins south of Coolum at the end of the Motorway,
also 5 early models including my 68 coupe.
Whereabouts up Coolum way are you planning to move.
Feel free to ask for local info from someone who's been here 5 generations.

Still trying to see if I can make this work financially, so not sure when it will happen. I'll be in touch when I know more. 68 coupe huh?

I wouldnt mind a late model, so if your budget goes leg up let me know.
