air lock
« on: March 29, 2009, 09:32:44 pm »
hi all
I seem to occasionally get air locks in my heater hoses
what is the best way to completeley bleed the cooling system its a 289 in a 66
I seem to remember a post a while back where someone suggested putting in a bleed tap or something similar so that you dont have to disconnect hoses
is this a good idea and if so where is the best place to locate it
can anyone steer me right
cheers Paul

Is that possible?
I thought that since one side of the heater is connected to the suction side of your pump and the other to the hotter pressure side of your donk, it would bleed itself!

Yes then there can be an air lock if the heater core is blocked........I got an Idea, why dont you get the garden hose and stick it in to the hose that comes from the inlet manifold and  make the pressure flush it out

yeah Ive done that and it  runs clean
and the heater blows hot but some times the volume of water going through the hoses is bugger all (and hoses get super hot )and sometimes it pumps through at what seems a normal rate
thats when I think Im getting an air lock if tat makes sense

The hoses could be cactus and collapsing!

nah theyre all good hev
reco radiator , all new hoses, themo and housing etc
just sometimes get this block (or something ) appreciate your thoughts though and I will give the core another  good flush
when I hook em back up where is the best place to purge or do you reckon if everything is all good there should be no need

If thermostat stays open then flow is reduced through the heater core. Pretty rare but possible senario. Will show up as erratic heater temp output.

To bleed you can use the garden hose trick.  We used to do that on camry's and camira's, real pains to get air out. Do like you have already to check flow, just block off with thumb and keep it blocked(one end should do). Then fill radiator till fowinin out off engine heater outlets and quickly jam on the heater hoses (make sure clamps are already on the hoses:: yes, I have left them off before).
