Pitman Arm 68 Coupe Power Steer
« on: September 02, 2008, 08:54:51 pm »

G`day all, I am fairly new to this forum.

Our 68 Coupe arrived back from the paint shop yesterday.
Awesome paint job - in Gulfstream Aqua.

Driving it home - the steering has a lot of play. Checked it out and appears to be a worn Pitman Arm. Looked for a replacement on the net last night and am now confused about which one will fit.

Stanger`s site lists the various models - The codes are

C7ZA - 3590 - C  or C9ZA - 3590 - A . Both listed as being for 67 - 70 Mustang 6 or 8 cyl with power steering.
However all the online shops show only the manual steer version which is code 3590 -B.

Does anybody have any knowledge of these? And where to obtain the correct part.
The car is a 68 6 cylinder with pwer steer and LHD.

Thanks.  Rocket.

Hi T-CODE, Yes - that is precisely the area where the play is.

Could it simply be a loose bolt?

Thanks.  Rocket.

T-CODE - Looks like you might have been spot on.

On the smaller end of the pitman arm it connects to the ball stud of the control valve. The ball stud may be loose or worn excessively.
Member 2 + 266 put up a great link from stanger`s site which shows it all very clearly.

Hey Mate,
I see in your other post you have put V8 hubs on the front...
Have you put V8 draglink/tie rods in when you upgraded your front end? I say this because when I got my car the Mexican I bought it off had put t code steering in (even though my car is a c code) I guess because they had robbed some from another car they had hanging around, as they had no money. Not knowing, I renewed all the ball joints etc to find that it would track and follow lines in the road really badly.
When I finally worked out I didnt have V8 steering, I bought a V8 draglink, tie rods and pitman arm (they are different from t code ones) and it steers really well now! I also put a new (not sure what it is called) stub that the idler bolts to as it was worn a bit, so it had a little play in the idler.
I have manual steering so our situations are not exactly the same, but it may help!
James.

James, I will check it all out over the weekend.

We had only changed to v8 stubs as part of the brake upgrade. Our car is a 6 cylinder - but i do like the idea of putting the heavier duty V8 steering components on it.

The brake upgrade has made a fantastic difference to the car, but i was aware of the wander in the steering before hand.

Thanks for your advice.

Yeah what I think I was trying to say is...I dont think the V8 stubs matched with the 6 cylinder steering works. Im only basing this on what happened to me.
BTW...the V8 steering setup is far superior to that flimsy 6 cyl setup.
I dont see why you couldnt set it up for your t code...should work well.
James.
