Dart engine

(1/1)

bruceanz@hotmail.com:
Hi I have a 66 Mustang that has a Dart iron block in it. the car badge says 289 but i dont think so because it has 4 bolt crank mains. Ive just pulled the heads off because of a head gasket fault and the casting on the head says 289 but Dart didt make a 289. Bore is roughly 4 inchs and stroke is 85mm or 3.346 inchs i think it might be a 351 or a 347 stroker. 351 had a different firing pattern than standard they were 13726548 and mine has the std 15426378.

Can anyone help please

Those numbers come to 336 cubes. Likely you've got the stroke slightly wrong and its 331 which used to be a pretty common stroked 302 before 347's became popular. One theory is that the 331 is happier because the rod length to stroke ratio is better.

If its a Dart block I guess someone could have put some old 289 heads on it but you have to wonder why. It's probably a good basis for some aluminium heads and bigger cam.
