Insurance for wedding rides
« on: January 04, 2023, 02:58:53 pm »
Hi guys,
I'm considering putting my car up for wedding hire. This won't be the main activity, as the car will be mostly used as private vehicle, it is just for a wedding or school ball every now and then.
At the moment the car is insured with Shannons (comprehensive, WA full rego), and I'm looking for an insurance that covers me when I drive someone, let's say bride and groom, to a wedding for a reward (=money).
On their PDS ("Things we don't cover" section, page 41) Shannons say:
"Hire, fare, reward or courtesy car
your vehicle being used for hire, fare or monetary reward, including ridesharing, or as a
courtesy car but we will provide cover if:
• your vehicle is being used in a carpool or childcare arrangement; or
• your type of vehicle usage is wedding hire use and this usage is shown on your certificate."

I called twice Shannons to ask clarifications and what "this usage is show on your certificate" exactly means, and they said that under no circumstances they cover such thing, even though it is written on their PDS.

I also called other companies and no one is able to provide such cover. In Western Australia NRMA might do that, but after spending 45min at the phone with 3 different operators, they were not able to provide a straight answer, or even a quote for my car for private use only.

Is anyone here using the car for wedding/school balls? If so, which company is providing insurance cover?
Also, if I decide to set up a business for car hire (not self-drive, only for events and me driving the car), do you know any company covering this type of business?

P.S.
in WA there are other permits required for driving a car for a reward (for them there is no difference between rideshare like Uber and wedding hire), and I already have those, so I'm covered for personal injury.

I would imagine that you would have to register a business name and have an ABN.
Then get a quote.
These guys are in Perth.

No idea if they are any good, Google search.

yes, business name and ABN are a requirement; I'm in the process of doing that, cost is very minimal.
Insurance is the main thing.
Thanks for the contact, going through a broker is my next thing to do, after dealing directly with insurance companies.
