Vin stamping

Keen to know where people have stamped the new VIN on older imports on rego.

As the new VINs are simply additional numbers/letters at the start of the existing Vin, am planning to just stamp the new details on the fender apron in addition to the existing.  This will mean there is a * in the middle of the vin. Has anyone done the same and encountered any issues with doing it this way, or do I need to make up a new vin plate.

In SA, we have them stamped down near the "Chassis Rails" so it doesn't detract from the vehicle's history and value etc.

FWIW, post USA my Mustang was next registered in NZ, later I brought it over to Australia.
In NZ it was issued with a new 17 digit VIN using the original factory VIN as a basis, and the new VIN plate was rivetted to the RH side of the firewall with two rivets.
The NZ VIN was used for importation to Qld and Qld rego. The original factory VIN is still visible on the LH apron and the door tag.
So it's visible if you look for it but not obtrusive.

I would be registering it with the OLD VIN rather than some dodgy NZ-issued one.
Not aware of any state in Australia than requires you to alter your car's VIN to register it unless the VIN cannot be found or is illegible?

All new imports are now required to be issued with a 17 digit stamped VIN thanks to federal changes.

We've had a couple of club members here in SA recently go through this process. Caused quite a discussion as you can imagine if the car was a rare vehicle like a genuine shelby etc.

Nothing dodgy about it. It was a carefully considered process. The newer VIN is the car's modern identity.
The old factory VIN is handily preserved for historical reasons.
Both form part of the car's provenance.
But the world has moved on from the dodgy dark ages of lesser digit count VINs.
