Well the deck height is larger than a 289 so the whole thing is higher and wider and things are pretty tight to start with in the early cars. I think a 351 Windsor is even bigger than a Cleveland though and there are plenty of them in an early Mustang. It will be very tight though and I really don't know why you'd bother given that a stroked 302 Windsor will be a better engine all round.

This might be worth a read.

I have a 351W in mine and it bolts straight in. Headers are tight and so are plugs. Car used to shake as headers just touched shock towers. I have now notched my shock towers and there is heaps of room.

Hey Fred,
I’d only put in a 302 Windsor, you’ll have much better room and they rev nicely.
As Dingo and Geoff say they fit but only just!
In a 66 Mustang with a 302 it will have all the power you need, unless you want ridiculous power.

In my experience don’t fit the later EFI 5L engine, unless you want to change it back to a carburettor, and remove the ECU.

If you keep the EFI ECU you can not add many modifications, the ECU won’t adjust to suit!

Saying that you will need to fit a new intake manifold, distributor and carburettor, You may also want to fit Alloy heads, new headers, Cam, bigger twin exhaust, add Borg Warner T5 gearbox and 9” housing and LSD. Plus you will need an Engineers certification, the price is adding up!

It all depends on what you want, but it could cost you heaps.

I stroked my 5L EFI to 347ci, then you worry about breaking the two bolt mains, in hindsight I would have felt more comfortable with a 331ci.

I have Unisteer power steering and had trouble getting the right headers to suit it and the transmission Z bar.
And I have enough trouble changing the spark plugs.

But I don’t want to turn you off what you want, it is very rewarding!

Whatever, enjoy your car.

Cheers Phil.

But if you've buggered a lot maybe you're not very good at it!

Two for one is good but four for two is better!

A 351windsor just fits ,extractors are a  pain , it’s a taller engine too . A351 Cleveland is a no go . 351windsor needs a good export brace and a Monti Carlo bar fitted . Torque boxes should be fitted as well . A 289 stroker to 347 is the go . I have owned a 65 with a 351windsor and a 66 with a 347 before ,now own a 70 with a 408 stroker .

That’s what we do  :thumb: . Just a no for the 351c . Bad enough fit into a 67-70 model .

Heads on the Cleveland (canted valves) are very wide compared to Windsor.   I think its been said already, a nice stroked 8.2” deck block with some decent heads is probably the easiest option.  Cleveland in 70 is not spacious
