Twin exhaust hangers on 65-66
« on: June 27, 2022, 10:35:51 pm »
Hi,
I’m looking to install a standard set of 2 inch exhausts on a 65 mustang. I already have the H pipe and want to add the kit available from Custom Mustangs or similar. With regard to hangers, I’m interested in where the standard hangers are situated and connect to the exhausts? Since I have converted from an I6 there was only one hanger next to the fuel tank on one side. I assume that is where the v8 hanger sits also? I also assume there are bolt holes in the same place on the other side?
i would prefer to install myself rather than take it to a shop to install.
Any advice is much appreciated.
Thankyou

On my 66, I have two holes in each frame rail at the rear that were used for the factory tie-down rings. So I bought a pair of these exhaust hangers and attached each to the exhaust pipe with U-bolts (I didn’t use the right angle bit). Work brilliantly.

Happy to post pics of install.

Thanks USA66, I think I will try those. Pics of the install would be great.
So did you also have hangers under the rear seat that connected to the mufflers?

Just a word of caution on fitting an exhaust kit, based on my experience. I wanted the exact factory fittings/hangers for my 65 GT fastback so ordered a kit.  Fitting the kit was somewhat difficult because the pipes were not quite bent at the correct angles. I spent hours adjusting them, only to realise I would need to get the pipe bends/angles adjusted at an exhaust shop. My issues were probably exacerbated by the trumpets which I wanted centred through the rear valance. If I had my time again I would have just bought the factory correct mufflers and hangers and asked a shop to do the pipework.

Hopefully you will not encounter the same problems I did or have easy access to a pipe bending machine.

Yes good point!

Exhaust guy gave me the same advice and I thought he was just talking me into not doing it myself.
