Battery for 65
« on: May 14, 2022, 03:22:36 pm »
Need to replace my battery in the 65. Any recommendations as to which battery (brand) and from where. I need one that has the same mounting points as the factory battery and preferably black. I’m in Sydney Thanks in advance.

It's almost impossible to find a battery that is the right size lengthwise and also has the clamp down tabs on the bottom at each end.

I ended up going with a Century 68MF https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/century-century-ultra-hi-performance-car-battery-68-mf/602501.html which is about an inch short, but is 640CCA.  But it is bright yellow - so not incognito black that you're after.  SuperCheap also has their own brand which is black but it is only 480CCA.

I clamp it down on the engine side, and also use a separate over the top battery hold down clamp like this https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/projecta-18cm-7-battery-hold-down-clam/SPO3956342.html.

Hey Muzzy,
Yes, definitely go for Century!
I bought one the other day.
Cheers Phil.

I bought a battery listed for a BMW about 10 years ago from Repco. Perfect Fit and Black.
Have since changed it to another car and replaced it with one from a Benz. Slightly higher but still fits, also black.

I've bought four batteries here in the last couple of years for diverse cars - my '66, my daily Benz, my old Rodeo and my daughter's Kia Rio. I highly recommend them.

They have outlets in Merrylands and Penrith.

Delkor or AC delco make a 580cca that fit the factory brackets.
way better than century, I normally get 7 to 10 years out of them.

Hey all,
I just think we should buy Australian every chance we can.
At least Century gives us that option!

I didn’t have a good run out of Delkor or Supercharge batteries.

Cheers Phil.

I’m leaning towards the repco battery but they are 231mm long and I’m after one that’s 255mm long. I would like to fit the autolite cover also.

Hey Muzzy,
Century do a black battery in the prefix DIN.
You’d have to check with the dealer about correct post polarity if that concerns you.

Unfortunately you'll enlarge the battery terminal holes as they are slightly different compared to the original version

After speaking to many distributors, unfortunately no one is making batteries which clamp on the short side. I therefore made my own clamp which goes over the battery which is covered by the cover. I still used the original clamp imitating the clamping process. I sprayed the clamp black and also used black tape along the top so that it will never short out the battery. I hope this helps others

Hi,

I've always had great performance and life out of Optima redtops. Current battery is still going well after 5 years and being cooked by two regulators! Think it's the 34R that clamps on the short side. Unfortunately not very original looking though.
Cheers

Hey Muzzy,
I just happened to be googling on eBay last night.
You can pick up a Autolite (replica?) on Auction for $1500 starting price.

Cheers Phil
